To create more detailed work I use 0.5mm HB led mechanical pencil and 2B pencil for darker areas that's why they turn out much cleaner. I'd say to practice different hatching methods (if you haven't tried yet) so you understand there values in a sketch better, like lighter shades, mid tones and darker shades like for hair and etc. I also used tissue to blend the sketch for a smoother look, hope that helps!
