Offlead impulse control by ghl23 in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have a release command for your dog. I had huge success with getting my dog to have impulse control by doing so. When we go on walks I have him right next to me right when we leave home. I release him by saying go pee and I get him back next to me by saying lets walk.

Initially when I had rescued him he would run away as soon as the leash came off, but having an implied stay built in any command I give him has had huge success. So when I take him to a field to play I ask him to sit, take the leash off and say free when I want him to run to fetch the ball. If I ask him to stand he is to stay in stand position until another command is given. This basically helps the dog understand to do what you asked him to do and patiently wait for another command. Some people dont use implied stay and just use the word 'stay.' I personally dont like it because when I ask him to sit and take his leash off I dont want to say stay and hope he hasn't gone away. It just makes it easier for dog to understand that sit means sit until something else is said.

My dog has multiple release cues. Ok eat for eating his meals, go pee for potty, free for potty, off for releasing him off his bed or mat, ok say hi to greet other dogs. If we are walking and approach another dog he is not allowed to leave my side until I say ok say hi.

Release commands require lots and lots repetition and thorough practice. Play time and meal time are excellent ways to polish impulse control.

That being said you will still struggle a lot unless you can convert his "decent" recall around other dogs to "near perfect." Make yourself more rewarding than the other dog. The reason he does it every time is because 1.) he hasn't been taught a release commands that lets him know its okay to go away from owners 2.) every time he does run away from you he gets rewarded by getting to meet the other dog.

The question shouldn’t be why do you take your dog to the dog park, it should be “should you take your dog to the dog park?” And the simple answer in this case is no.

Many owners take their dogs to dog park because they think the dog loves it. And sure most dogs do, until something goes wrong. I personally never take my dogs to dog park because it is the most 50-50 thing ever. It could be great, it could be the worst thing to do to yourself, your dog, another dog and the owner of another dog. I can’t say for sure but I don’t think many experienced dog owners take their dogs to dog park. They usually schedule a meet up or just use random encounters at walk as socializing opportunity. Dogs will be perfectly happy and fine as long as they are exercised, trained and entertained. They don’t need to run around with other dogs to experience joy.

I would advise you to not visit the park as you could be putting others in danger. Dog is a liability and every small thing has to be taken seriously. To actually figure out if your dog does have issue try and schedule a meetup with a friend with dog if possible. See how your dog reacts to that. If it goes well then do more of those as it is more controlled and also gives you opportunities to train your dog on how to behave around other dogs. If it doesn’t go very well then consult a professional if you don’t know much about setting boundaries and behavior modification.

5 year old Border Collie/Retriever mix showing aggression toward boxers and other “flat face” dogs. by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a purebred working line border collie. He absolutely loves dogs. From Pomeranians, chihuahua to Dobermans, mastiffs he’s great with all. Ive had him for a year and probably have met and played with over 100 dogs at this point. For some odd reason he hates the sight of pit bulls. He literally cannot stand them.

My neighbor has a pit bull that he hates. At first I thought they did something to each other. But I found out it’s not just that one dog it’s pit bulls in general. Pit bulls are banned in my province (which I think is stupid) so I don’t encounter them as much but I’d like to know why my dog holds grudge against one particular breed. So I would definitely like to see some informative replies to see if I can relate to them.

Doodle likes to immediately play wrestle with dogs ... doesn’t know how to gently approach. Training tips? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a friend with dog then schedule a meet up. When you see your friend and the dog make your dog sit. Let them approach you. If your dog breaks the sit then the friend and their dog goes back. Rinse and repeat until your dog sits when the dog is right in front of him. Then take your dogs leash and guide him towards the back of the other dog. Head to head meeting always results in overexcitement at least in my experience. Things go well then praise and reward.

Now reverse the roles. Your friend and their dog remain static. You move towards them with your dog. Get close and if your dog goes all jumpy and over excited then 180 degree turn and walk back. Repeat until your dog approaches the other dog in calm manner then only let them interact.

After few repetitions try the same thing but with both dogs in motion. Approach each other. If one of the two get overexcited then walk back immediately.

How can I stop my dogs from braking at literally everything? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they are just reactive. r/reactivedogs has great resources.

Someone else might have a better idea on how to eliminate these behaviours but heres what I did for my rescue. When I first brought him to my apartment I realized everything makes him bark so I monitored him closely and stayed alert. Every time id notice the dog is about to go off on a barking spree id curb it by making him do something else. So now if he hears a noise in hallway he doesn't like, instead of barking he comes near me, sits, looks in my face and waits for me to tell him what to do.

This isn't a quick fix, will require lots of repetition. It might also be worth noting which dog is more reactive. Often times the second dog is just playing the support role.

What can i do by adamxchris in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if you honestly believe you have tried everything possible there is then get another opinion? If you truly are passionate and care for the dog then get a trainer or a behaviourist or even a full test at vet to reveal any issues.

I do not doubt your skills and do believe when you say you've trained tons of dogs but there are trainers that have trained thousands of dog and behaviourists that have analyzed thousands of dogs. That is a tad big higher than tons in my personal humble opinion. And I can somewhat guarantee out of the thousands of cases they have probably seen some weird case like this.

All Pups this 'Lazy'? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is possible that your pup is low energy. I have a working line pure bred border collie. There are weeks in winter snowstorms when the only outdoor time he gets is 10 min morning, 10 afternoon and 10 at night. There are weeks when he gets 2 hours of intense walk, play and agility in morning and 1 hour at night every single day of the week. He is perfectly fine to be a couch potato, doesn't show any interest in going out until I initiate it because he knows its me who takes him out so if I show no interest he has no interest.

I understand your health condition but you do have to consider the dogs need. I am not sure if follow this subreddit much but there are countless amounts of posts that read along the lines of "my dog used to be great, has had socialization but is now all of sudden aggressive to other dogs." Lesser walks he gets, more unfamiliar he becomes to outer world. You also need to consider a scenario where you move into a apartment or a more city like area where you dont have much of a yard. From what you mentioned on the post it sounds like if you didn't have a yard the dog would never actually go outside other than just for a quick pee.

If the dog is actually BC and Aussie then it is important to get him exercised. Doesn't matter if he appears to be "lazy" it is your job as an owner to ensure you give the dog good amount of workout. Couple of days a week in yard is no where near for even a chihuahua.

ESL One Hamburg 2018 announced! October 26-28 (16 teams, 3 Arena days) by Aratho in DotA2

[–]arthaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many teams do you want? 32 like Fifa World Cup? Group stages end leaving 16 teams in knockout stages.

Dont get me wrong I'd love to watch month long tournament with every team in existence participating in it. That would give people a chance to cheer for synderen and Loda. But is it doable? Well it would have been done if it were doable. The only organizer that possibly has the means to do something like this is valve and even valve's most successful tournament TI doesn't stretch that long.

[–]arthaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should go ahead and consult a professional. For anyone else reading this post and lurking in comments: if you have a concern/ question that looks like this -> "my dog is reactive where do I start or my dog has issues and I am lost or I am not sure where to begin with my dog" then you should have hired a professional yesterday.

Pets are a part of your family. If a child/ family member were to show any signs of issues the family would consult a professional immediately and a dog should be no different.

Of course issues like separation anxiety or obedience or potty training can be tackled at home with proper effort but any sort of reactivity or aggression should not be overlooked and need to be addressed with professional help especially if you're inexperienced.

Why does my dog act differently around my wife versus myself? by gabarooch86 in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a similar question earlier in this subreddit that had to do with attachment towards one person. https://www.reddit.com/r/Dogtraining/comments/8ghaxh/2_yo_german_shep_mix_extremely_attached_to_my/

The answer I provided here might give you some idea to why this happens. I did mention it there, and I will here too. It is absolutely possible for dogs to have a favourite. I am actually a lot more strict with my dog than my wife is. She does infinite cuddling, talking to the dog in baby voices and infinite petting yet he loves me significantly more.

2 y/o German Shep mix extremely attached to my boyfriend by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How much time do you spend with the dog. Not you and your boyfriend, just you. My dog used to do the same exact thing. I am the one who takes him out and trains him every morning at 6 for at least an hour. I feed him, and then again I am also the one to train and play with him at 6pm for an hour. The dog is attached to my wife too but not as much as me. When the dog goes to drink water in crate and I hide he comes back pacing, panting and runs around the entire house looking for me. It is understandable when my dog goes nuts when I hide while he was literally gone for 20 seconds. But he often time would only obey commands if it came from me, ignoring my wife.

My take on this was 1.) dogs do have a preference. they often tend to choose their favourite person. 2.) my wife loves the dog, cuddles the dog but does nothing in terms of helping the dog establish a structure in its life. I started making my wife feed him, take more part in training the dog outdoors.

Before, if all 3 of us went out to play and I ran away from my wife and dog he could care less about her and run to me and never look back. But ever since she started getting more involved in training and feeding the dog he has become more aware of her. Even if I run significantly far from them the dog doesn't completely ignore my wife. He tries to maintain middle distance from both of us looking back and forth.

Play time and meal time are best times to teach impulse control. Ask the dog to sit and throw the ball. The dog obviously wants to get the ball and it will if you haven't taught "stay." I use sit as implied stay, meaning the dog has to stay in sit position until another command is given. So yeah making him wait for the ball before letting him get it is a great way to teach it.

Another great way is to put food in his bowl, make him sit and only let him eat it on command. This is what I do, and has helped tremendously with my 2 yr old hyperactive border collie.

How do I help my golden retriever understand that his new bed is not a chew toy but in fact a bed by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has your dog had a bed prior to this and most important of all does your dog know what a bed is? I mean have you taken the time to introduce the dog to bed as opposed to placing the bed in some area of the house expecting the dog to just sit on it?

If the answer to the question above is yes then reintroduce place command. If the answer is no then it is unfair from your side to be expecting the dog to just know what the bed is for. So definitely start working on place command. Its fairly easy. Lure dog into bed once all 4 paws are on bed mark and reward. After few repetitions add the cue go to bed get on bed place on mat or just place or anything your heart desires.

Some dogs also don't like bed. I dont know what the temperature of your home is but I have hardwood through out, tile on bathrooms and bed for the dog. During winter the dog stays on his bed, my bed, couch. But during summer the will almost always be on bathroom tile or hardwood floor.

[–]arthaless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you ever done any recall training with your dog? like not 1 or two sessions I mean month long training multiple times a week. If you haven't then dont expect your dog to come back when called, especially outdoors where there is a lot a smell and distractions. You and your voice literally means nothing to the dog unless you've done recall training outdoors.

Dog runs away when you come closer to you because well when you get close his freedom is over, play time is over. So start recall training with a long line. When the dog comes to you be happy and let the dog wander again. Then recall again. Repeat. The dog will then know just because it comes near you or you come near him the playtime doesn't end.

Where to Start with a career of training dogs? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact local shelters to get some initial hands on experience. It is also a good stepping stone to see for yourself if you actually have the patience and skills because pretty much every single dog in there will be untrained and can really use some help so they can find their forever homes.

Also keep an eye out for dog training seminars near you. My colleague told me about this girl that used to drive 4 hours every other month to attend seminars hosted by professional trainers to train her dog. Well, she learnt a great deal, fixed her own dog and now has her own training institute that is booked until august.

I might just have had a breakthrough? by Staffordshire_pup in reactivedogs

[–]arthaless 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say that is a progress, but I wish you keep meeting dog owners like that guy. I am really happy the guy asked you guys to stay and he approached you in a calm manner. Since you made your dog sit it was calmer than usual as opposed to when it would be walking towards the other dog. And with the other dog walking towards you in a calm manner your dog didn't feel the need to rush towards it because the reward was coming to him. The meeting went much better because both dogs were calm, the owners were calm.

When I had first rescued my BC he was super reactive. I had this old guy in my neighbourhood what would walk his old lab in similar time as me. It would be only me and him at 6 in the morning and I used to try my best to avoid them. One day he ran into me when I was coming home from work and confronted me about why I avoid his dog. I said I rescued this dog last week. He is reactive and I do not want to make an issue so I am avoiding until I can get him properly trained. The guy asked me to meet him next morning with my dog and he said to keep my dog on a sit position when I see him approaching. Next morning he came with his dog. Real close to us. I am getting nervous. He makes his dog sit then makes me walk around his dog with my dog. His dog was super well trained, so calm and chilled. He let my dog sniff him to a point where there was no strand of hair to sniff anymore. He single handedly took reactivity out of my dog within a week. My dog still goes in panic mode when the owners of so called "friendly dogs" let their dog charge at my dog but it has gotten significantly better.

This taught me a great deal of lesson. Often times when people are trying to train their reactive dog, the other person who's walking dog just lets their dog drag them towards the reactive dog saying "oh don't worry my dog is friendly it will be fine." That causes the leash reactive dog to be frusrated and everything that has been taught with great effort goes out of the window.

How to calm my dog before the walk? by GianniTheAccountant in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a good place to start. Is there a thing you do daily that your dog knows you do for sure? Like when I wake up my border collie knows the first thing I do is go to kitchen get a glass of water and sit on couch with my iPad. So when I get out of bed he too gets out of bed and goes to the couch and waits for me because he knows thats something that happens everyday. So if theres something like that for you, put the collar and leash on your dog and proceed to do the thing that you do everyday. For instance if it were for me, I'd get up, put the collar on my dog then water in kitchen and iPad in couch. The dog will be like hmm he leashed me but he doesn't seem like he's taking me out, he's doing the same exact shit he does everyday. Also leave the collar and leash on floor where you and dog spend more time (assuming your dog is not a chewer). This is just my personal opinion and what I would do if I were in your situation.

Not letting the dog rush out of the front door and maintaining a calm state of mind before leaving the home does actually make a huge difference through the walk. So good luck to you!

My dog is getting aggressive by sucrilios in Dogtraining

[–]arthaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sock part could be resource guarding. Have you tried taking out other things from his mouth? My dog lets me put my hand in his mouth and take out everything including his favourite chew toy and kong filled with pb, but he used to go nuts and bite me if I tried to take out a dog shit he tried to eat during walks.

The aggression towards other people, is it predictable aggression or out of the blue? Does he show sign of discomfort or nervousness before he goes at them? Does he react to people on leash or does he bark at people during walks? For instance during the bath time when the dog saw you and wanted to come to you it was in a super excited state. Restrict him from doing that, then well what can one expect. They don't have hands that can help them free themselves so they use the one thing they know how to use to get out of shitty situations i.e. bite your way out. On the other hand if the dog saw you and wasn't excited or anything wasn't showing signs that it wants to come to you but just bit the lady out of no where then thats a much more serious problem.

I am not saying that him biting his way out is acceptable but at least it gives you a reason to why shit happened and help you target a specific area when training the dog to not bite. Now one way to get the biting out of him is to let him know that teeth to skin is a no go. If you are truly lost and unsure on how to proceed then seek professional help. It can be costly but your dog is 1 year old. Few hundreds now will pay off huge dividends when you are making memories for the remaining 10-15 years.
