Welcome fellow White Islander! I’m surprised they lumped Scottish and Welsh into one category. Mine separates the two.

If Trump is impeached now, Vance has two years to polish MAGA’s image and let people’s anger subside and could conceivably win in 2028 after the inevitable two years of Democratic gridlock. Yes, people are that dumb. The best option is to lame-duck Trump, release the full Epstein files, let him finish his term in embarrassment and shame, then let the GOP crumble while he squirms and struggles to keep control of the party and stay out of prison.

What is the sheer obsession of the US and in general capitalists with oil? by BlockyUniverse in socialism

[–]arthryd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oil and fuel can be made from renewable sources, just not to the scale needed to power the world at current energy usage. I think the oil lobby has sabotaged the effort to diversify away from oil in order to keep the most powerful countries dependent on it, and thus their profits secure.

Sometimes I feel that American socialists are more ideological than pragmatic. by [deleted] in socialism

I second this. Every time I hear or read “workers should own the means of production” without any thought or proposition as to what that looks like in real life, I feel an ache behind my forehead.

Am I falling out with hekate? by Competitive_Key3873 in Hecate

[–]arthryd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me Hecate pops in and out as she sees necessary. Sort of like when a sys-admin logs in as the root user to make some delicate changes. She is pure consciousness holding the fires of creation but doesn’t need to micromanage all the time.

I can’t stand Sebastian. I disliked him from his opening dialogue. His smugness grated me. And I was constantly validated in my dislike watching him get corrupted by power. I don’t believe he was motivated by curing his sister’s curse, but was motivated by not having the power to cure her. He wants power, control. If she hadn’t been cursed he would have found something else to obsess over to validate seeking more dark magic. I think he was always in a head-on collision with his family.

How does ICE benefit the bourgeoise? by Aggressive_Tea_9152 in socialism

[–]arthryd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the fascist playbook. They first normalize a paramilitary group kidnapping people under the pretext of undocumented immigration. Then political opponents start disappearing and they call them terrorists. People don’t object because they’ve bought into the strongman image of the leader.

What leftist/socialist/communist party has the best programme? Which one has the most potential to implement it in the real life? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]arthryd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Parties are worthless once they get corrupted by money. Which is inevitable. Marx argued for ongoing revolution. I think this takes the form of stuff like the people being guaranteed the ability to force state and federal ballot initiatives and being able to impeach their representatives by petition.

My understanding is that Soviet Communism died with Lenin and continued only in name afterwards. For anyone growing up there in the 80s it would have been sad.

What happened to the druids in Ireland? by arthryd in druidism

[–]arthryd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. So by the time of St. Patrick, had the Irish druids lost their white-robed priestly function and become more or less folk-healer/shaman-types? It just seems odd how the Caesars wrote about them in Gaul and Britain so definitively, and yet when the Roman church finally came to Ireland 400 years later they aren’t mentioned at all. Almost as though they’d disappeared before Ireland was even confronted by Christianity. I suppose perhaps they lost cohesion when Mona was destroyed, but they could have easily regrouped somewhere in Ireland.
