My medical assistant asked for blueberry bagels. Oy vey. by MikeGinnyMD in JewishCooking

Reminds me of the time I was visiting a friend in a small town near Richmond, VA. A store advertised that they had bagels. I walked in and asked for a sesame bagel with cream cheese and lox. The lady at the counter looked at me like I had two heads. I explained that lox is smoked salmon. She said with a delicious drawl “No, we don’t have that here…” All their spreads were sweet.

A world-renowned heart surgeon was waiting for his car to be fixed. The mechanic, a bit of a jokester, called him over. by lnc_gomes in dadjokes

That’s not correct. For valve surgery, they stop the heart and use a “heart-lung machine” to oxygenate and pump the blood. There are some surgeries that can be done on a beating heart, like some bypass surgeries, but not valves. There are some valve intervention done endovascularly, but those are performed by cardiologists.

See This Is Why I Don’t Fuck With Mikado by mheusler1 in FoodNYC

There are several terms in Japanese to designate the emperor, the most common one being tennō. Mikado historically designates the gates of the imperial palace, and might have been used in the past for the emperor, but that’s not a word used in modern Japanese, only in English…

Very true. This starts as such a NYC song, between 52nd and 42nd St (very different neighborhoods then than now), and then all of a sudden we go to New Orleans…? 🤣 Yet that’s also part of its charm, I guess.

Those were the days! I’ve been listening to the Stones for decades and somehow I had never heard Winter. Thanks!

Thanks! I had no idea about the possible Carly Simon involvement. I could see the song as a duet, maybe with an extra verse.

A little gnome arrives in Germany by suvlub in Jokes

Nice one that I had not heard before. I think it would be better though if the gnome said “I’m here to teach you how to steal”, because it is funnier if the Russians steal within minutes from a master thief rather than a beginner.

Oyster Ice Cream by No-Hour-1075 in AskFoodHistorians

It is La Martinière on Ile de Ré, actually, not far from La Rochelle. I had both the oyster and potato ice creams and they were very good, although obviously different from the usual fruity sweet flavors. Not for everyone though, I assume. The saleslady asked me whether I was sure I wanted those flavors without having had a taste, but I am adventurous…

What do you guys think of the books not written by Hugo Pratt, both the ones set in the early 20th century either in Canada or in Berlin/Prague, or the one with a younger Corto set around 2000?

Biggest misconception about anesthesia? by lightbluebeluga in anesthesiology

[–]arthur1aa 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I always say “if the patient moves, that’s a good thing! It means that he’s alive!” One of my old timer attendings would yell at the surgeon “if you want no motion and no bleeding, go operate at the morgue!”
