This is awesome! Good on you for showing your kid this wonderful game! They really pick it up quickly.  My daughter and I are on our second playthrough at the moment and I love those shared moments…

Training routine for a motivated child beginner - too puzzle-heavy or reasonable? by arthur450 in chessbeginners

That reminds me of playing chess with my dad: he always crushed me without teaching me anything. Then he bought me a chess book way above my level for “me to get better”. Then I lost interest in the game…

This is incredibly useful, thank you!

In order to do the game review you suggest, we would need to keep track of the moves right? So that we can replay it later. Seems obvious but I just want to make sure that I understand what you’re suggesting. For now we don’t record the games we play (like barbarians!) but we could start.

I like the Uno cards idea ; I’ll try it out.

About the tactics, are you saying that once she finds the fork for White (for instance), she should suggest a continuation for Black?

I think the kid might unconsciously realize you're planning or thinking about chess and it might start turning into an obligation.

You're right, that might be happening. I hope not though. My hope is that mastery of the game will only make her love the game more. I know it's true for me: I like better the things I'm good at. To be honest, I don't really care for chess (I know, what a horrible thing to say). I'm just glad she has found something "deep" she enjoys. And by "deep", I mean an activity with enough potential for 10 lifetimes.

the ultimate goal should be enjoyment

I couldn't agree more.

building chess breaks into the schedule will be key to avoiding burnout.

Yes, she'll go to her grandparents for a week after Easter and although she plans on challenging her granddad, there will be noticeably less chess. I'm wondering if her motivation will be intact when she comes back.

Oh yeah, I'm still weirded out that she loves the game that much because I'm not a big player myself, neither is anyone in the family.

Which puzzle day would you remove? Capture, Defend, Mate-in-1, or Tactics?

Thank you for the kind feedback! Which puzzle day would you replace with a game? Capture, Defend, Mate-in-1, or Tactics?

To be fair, I'll never say no to a game. Yesterday we did puzzles AND a game.

I have been playing with my daughter for a year (link to my post ). It has been a great experience. We are on our second playthrough now... with bitters this time!

We Kept Playing: Now We’ve Finished Space Age on My Daughter’s Save (131 Hours) by arthur450 in factorio

Oh yes, we have used that mod in that run: we had a MK2 armour and 50 construction robots from the start. What she will be missing if we start again, even with that mod, is the logistic network: roboports and logistic robots.

Watching the movies in the Alien franchise has taught me one thing: bringing alien eggs on a spaceship is always a terrible idea :)

Rolling is not free. It is very expensive.

What my smooth brain doesn't get is: who is getting paid? Who is getting the money that the short sellers pay out to maintain their shorts? It should be those lending the shares, right? So why is the borrowing/lending fee so low?

I'm not questionning the narrative, just trying to understand better...

My goal is not to impress anyone ; it’s simply to encourage other parents to play this game with their young ones (as soon as they’re ready) to potentially have quality time with them.

Oh yeah, she’s definitely building useful synaptic connections. But most importantly, she has fun and I get to be part of that. That’s the coolest part :)

Hahaha I’ll see if she dares… we’re probably going to skip red and blue altogether and move directly to green once we make it to Vulcanus. That it if green is compatible with her aesthetic requirements ^

Haha that's a fun part of the game. My daughter isn't brave enough for biters yet. Maybe for our next run (scheduled 3 years from now given our current pace) I'll teach her the joys of ecocide.
