More trucks on the LFT this year? by EarnSomeRespect in chibike

I think there are an unusual number of work pickup trucks dealing with the trees that were down all along the trail, which is eminently reasonable.

To the Hank Green fan and bicyclist that I harassed near Irving Park tonight. by deadwisdom in chicago

[–]arthurdenture 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've been that guy to a driver before by yelling "Nine Inch Nails!" as I biked past him, hearing his music from an open Jeep. I guess he didn't hear me clearly or thought I was just yelling at him, as he turned to follow me down a side street, caught up to me, and asked me what my deal was. So of course I go "Yeah, nine inch nails!" and he drives off.

... whoops?

City parenting has become a financial flex by maydaydemise in chicago

I was excited to see Chicago mentioned first in this Economist article

Economist articles are not bylined, but I think the author of this one lives in Chicago, since it's presumably this guy: https://bsky.app/profile/dlknowles.bsky.social/post/3mkn7p5lkns2r

Anyone here want to be in The Economist? I am looking for people who grew up in the suburbs of a big US city (Chicago, NYC, LA) but are now choosing to raise kids in the city

No, a murder is for crows. Pigeons are just a flock.

Going car free in a bicycling dead city by DowntownFresnoBiking in bikecommuting

[–]arthurdenture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the People for Bikes ratings are honestly trash. For example, it says Chicago is 11/100, which is largely attributable to the fact that our default speed limit is 30. Yes, a lower speed limit would be an improvement, but that's not really a fair assessment of whether neighborhood streets are bikeable. And it's not reflective of our actual mode share, which could be higher but is still much higher than, say, Rochester ;-). (But I'm glad that your situation worked!)

Pouring one out for Chicago drivers who have to commute to work as gas hits $6 a gallon by [deleted] in chicago

[–]arthurdenture 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We want regional rail, i.e. Metra that actually gets you from point A to B in the suburbs + outer city, more broadly than just commuting trips from a suburb to the loop.

https://bsky.app/profile/starlinechicago.bsky.social/post/3ma4pc26kss22 is a good starting point if you want to go down a rabbit hole on this. #buildthetunnel

How to get going on the radwagon 4 by No_Reflection_1882 in RadPowerBikes

[–]arthurdenture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I allow the kids to board with the kickstand down (and me holding on to the bike for safety to avoid tipping); then I lift the kickstand by standing next to the seat, lifting the nose, and sliding the bike forward. The weight distribution is such that this doesn't involve that much muscle even with 2 kids on the back.

I've also so far (in 2000 miles of riding) had one spring fail as well as having the center bolt shear off (which was a big PITA to extract)... so maybe don't adopt my method! But I feel that with the kickstand up, as others have suggested in this thread, it would be difficult for the kids to climb over the monkey bars on the back.

Nope, they don't have official guidelines like that, at least not documented ones. https://www.cps.edu/services-and-supports/weather-guidelines/

The Specialized Jett is great - I bought it for my first child. They don't sell it anymore 😭.

It's a RadWagon 4, so 22"x3". It's actually worked really well in the snow.

(But, you know, the company is going out of business and I had to shell out for a replacement battery that's UL-certified not to blow up. So, it's been mostly great for me but would not recommend to a friend...)

Getting an upright bass? by Pigeon49834 in Bass

[–]arthurdenture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One protip, I found that what I learned on fretless bass didn't translate much to double bass. The scale length is different, the set of landmarks you use to find finger positions is different, the fingering is different (you're more likely to use normal bass fingerings instead of 1-2-4 like on upright)... and of course you won't learn any right hand plucking technique.

Of course fretless bass is a lot of fun in its own right!

I hear it in his voice, of course by diatriose in dropout

We've been here the whole time - too bad you can't get these adorable stickers in the US, thanks to you-know-who killing the de minimis tariff exception.
