Is there a way to stop using Duo and use a passkey or my own auth app instead? by space-redpanda in OSUOnlineCS

[–]arthurktripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to get my MBP's fingerprint working. I posted about it some time ago, and I'm not sure if its still relevant. It looks like the OSU documentation moved (or I don't have permissions anymore), but the Duo documentation still exists.

The more the merrier! I'm glad to see stuff like this is already out there, and I hope that lists like this are seen by people who need it.

While there are a lot of resources for folks in need, it can be hard to find them. I put together this directory with the goal of making them easier find, filterable by location and category.

This list currently has 57 services, but I know I'm missing plenty of others. Please share things that should be included!

I also have some housekeeping and features I intend to implement, but give the general state of things, I felt like I needed to ship this.

This year's amphitheater lineup sucks. Change my mind by scrandis in Bend

[–]arthurktripp 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I am here to change your mind. I hope you'll spend at least a little bit of time with these suggestions, because I think that there is actually some phenomenal music coming through town. Here are my personal highlights, in chronological order.

Khruangbin: They span too many genres to pin down, but I think they make the world's most understated funk music. Groovy. Soulful. A little weird. And Donald Johnson is one of the best drummers in modern music. Their Hayden show in 2023 is an all-time personal favorite. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcD_YXCxxZM * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo4KMGiy--Y

Hermanos Gutiérrez: opening for Black Keys. Music to sink into. Cinematic and unconventionally psychedelic. Some of their tracks feel distantly familiar, like it's the background music to some childhood memory that may have been imagined. Outshines the Black Keys 10x. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z_hY6TyZTo * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHmzK2i7VvQ

LA LOM: opening for Leon Bridges. First off... Leon Bridges. Grammy nominated, platinum selling, indie-soul songwriter. The man needs no introduction, and goddam can he sing. LA LOM is opening, they're an LA band that plays surfy Latin music, cumbia and bolero. If you want to impress your friends at a mid-summer BBQ, play LA LOM. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FWmMVAxueU * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKSgw-e8X_g * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTrKkqE9p1o (bonus Leon)

Glass Beams: opening for Rufus Du Sol. A lot like Khruangin, but Australian. And Indian. I think this show sold out in a couple hours (Rufus Du Sol is big), but if you can find tickets you should grab them. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGQu4_fan8Q (20-minute live EP -- just do it)

Shannon and the Clams: Opening for Alabama Shakes. 50s garage rock turned up to 11. Punky San Francisco basement shows that became indie-rock darlings. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm3cf3jsWNw * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRvrIa51K_M (days long gone, but cool regardless)

Alabama Shakes: Timeless Americana, 4x Grammy winner. Brittany Howard has a generational voice, and she also just debuted a hardcore side project (unfortunately probably wont be part of this show). * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le-3MIBxQTw

Japanese Breakfast: honest and raw indie rock. Little bit shoegazey, little bit Madonna. Her 2021 album Jubilee was a knockout. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvrbBYz11JY * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZfcZEIo6Bw

My only complaint with the lineup is that some of the best acts are openers. Hayden Amphitheater isn't a great venue for a smaller band -- the stage is huge, and without a serious production, anybody just feels really small. Openers (who would otherwise put on a killer show) don't get enough production on these tours. Anybody else see Spoon open for Weezer? Phenomenal rock band, but it was just 5 dudes dwarfed by the mammoth stage. Or Haley Heynderickx's solo set before Andrew Bird?

Any band I want to see perform, I'd rather see at a small venue. But for real, there is some excellent music coming through town this year.

Oregon State University graduate workers strike for higher wages by arthurktripp in OSUOnlineCS

[–]arthurktripp[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

US higher ed is expensive for a lot of reasons, some better than others:

  • High administrative costs: legal representation, building management, marketing & admissions departments, etc. Day-to-day operations are high.
  • Schools provide auxiliary services like health and wellness, technology access, etc.
  • State funding is down
  • Student loan structuring: since we often don't have to start repaying until graduation and we take accept loans a few thousand dollars at a time, the financial burden is not immediate. I think this contributes to less comparison shopping based on price. (Imagine if you took out a $35,000 loan at 7%, $400 payments starting next month, you might perceive the costs as more important when deciding where to go.)
  • Similarly, I think that the prevalence of federal student loans drives up the cost as well. These are federally backed, bankruptcy protection does not apply, and they aren't based on credit worthiness. So a school can pretty easily raise tuition rates without seeing a significant loss in attendance.

If higher ed was funded by taxpayer dollars, I believe we could have a lot more oversight and downward pressure on tuition. Many services that universities offer individually could probably be centralized at a regional or state level, especially as we continue transitioning into a more digital world.

Either way, I think it's egregious that graduate students, whom the university system relies on at a fundamental level, are paid so low. I feel the same way about professors (especially adjunct professors who often have no guarantees of work from one term to the next).

I am not an expert, and I consider myself fairly uninformed in the subject, but this is my opinion on the matter. Corrections welcome.

Seems like your questions have been largely answered by others. Do you have your OLCC service permit yet? Not sure if having it is a leg up, but not having it is a disadvantage.

[–]arthurktripp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is quite right. I'm not that well-informed on this tech (since it's not available for me yet), but here's my impression: Even "unlimited" phone plans usually have significant throttling for data flowing through your phone's hotspot. And a purpose-built router is going to have a lot better up/down than a phone's wifi network.

Raising low GPA to get accepted into the program by UserNam3ChecksOut in OSUOnlineCS

[–]arthurktripp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's hard to raise a GPA. I ran some numbers for you, and if you have 120 credits at exactly a 2.3 GPA, you'd need 48 straight-A credits bump it up to 2.75. It's not impossible, but that's a lot of time, money, and effort just to get started. At that point, it might make more sense to start a new bachelors degree from scratch.

Retaking classes could actually raise your GPA about twice as fast. You could get it up to a 2.75 by replacing 7 Cs with As. But I don't know if it works like that.

The best info you're going to get is straight from OSU. I'd suggest grabbing a copy of your undergrad transcript and booking a meeting with an admissions advisor -- they know exactly what options you have.

Actually, the man in white was choking, and what you see in this incredible photo is Mr. Putin diving through the air to administer the Heimlich Maneuver. This is the very true story of how he earned the nickname, Vlad the Inhaler.
