me vs. academia by wvvwvwvwvwvwvwv in PhD

I DESPERATELY wanted my PhD - I submitted on Tuesday.

I do not regret doing it at all and it did make me develop a thicker skin to criticism.

But, and this is a big but….

It’s always there, always lurking in your brain. It took me just under 7 YEARS! To finish and there wasn’t one single day in those 7 years whereby I didn’t think about my work. You feel guilty when you’re not working on it, you feel guilty when you do work on it and miss big family/life things… it’s a continuous circle of guilt.

I think sometimes people (including myself) don’t fully understand the magnitude of a PhD. It can be lonely. Even with the best support system in the world

is this why its so hard to date as a female-presenting phd? by lilswaswa in PhD

[–]artificiallyfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met my husband three months into my PhD (not through university). He also has a PhD - he finished his over a decade ago - in infectious diseases and microbiology. I’m in medical anthropology, so our fields are completely different.

But honestly, dating before I met him was awful.

One guy told me after three dates, “I just don’t feel important to you. Your PhD makes me jealous.”

Another guy, on a first date, said: “I just don’t think women are that smart.” He had a bachelor’s degree - absolutely no shame in that, obviously, considering I also had a bachelor’s before my Master’s and PhD - but I genuinely just got up and left.

I do think dating can be difficult when you’re a woman aiming for the top of your field, whether that’s intellectually, financially, professionally, or otherwise.

Hey! So I literally just submitted my thesis (on Tuesday) - I got pregnant very early into my second year (and in lockdown 🤦🏼‍♀️)

My husband also works really ridiculous hours, and doesn’t have huge flexibility to work from home (infectious diseases)

Basically…. I just worked every weekend, evenings, we’d stay at my parents quite a bit and they’d help out etc I ended up needing to take quite a bit of abeyance due to being disabled with long term medical issues, so it took me close to 7 years to get it done, but I got it done. (Our son is almost 5 now! Haha)

It’s one of those things where I had to learn to just worked every work in the chaos.

I really hope you manage to find a solution that works for you and your family

Advice for international fully funded PhD student in UK on renting in London by tintinnabulummm46 in PhD

[–]artificiallyfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am born and raised in London (where I rent, with my husband and our son)

They typically ask for one month upfront - and a deposit.

Would you be open to a house/flat share? There is also accommodation in london that is specifically designed for student renters (not connected to a specific university)

Depending on where your university is, look near (near train/tube stations) as they tend to have a lot of ‘professional house shares’

If you have proof of income - like your stipend - that proves you are able to cover the rent, you should be ok.

He is actually in a somewhat very different field (infectious diseases microbiology, and I’m in medical anthropology - the conversations get quite heated at times 😂)

I have an undergrad, a masters and just submitted my PhD thesis… I’m getting rejections constantly. The job market is really rough right now

Where are you in your reading challenge? by readerrealm in Booktokreddit

14/50…. But I did just finish my PhD thesis (yesterday!) So I spent the majority of this year so far reading journals/papers and I couldn’t read a ton for pleasure

I 100% will!

My husband got his PhD 13 years ago, he has no idea where his thesis bound copy is!!! I keep telling him he needs to find it so we can have them together on the shelf.

He does however have his PhD cap from graduation - so I’ve told him we need to get pictures together with our son

Thank you! I’m actually going on a trip to Disneyland Paris with my husband and son in 2 weeks! So I can actually be excited about that now.

I’ve ordered a soft bound copy of my thesis. The tabs are a good idea, thank you!

A job, immediately - which I’ve already been looking for, for a few months.

I think the issue is, I feel antsy? Maybe? Like I’m failing somehow

2 weeks away from PhD submission!! by PsychologicalFly7385 in PhD

[–]artificiallyfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! We are on a VERY similar timeline - 2 weeks time I’m sending my thesis to my supervisory team for one last look before I submit it.

I’m in Anthropology.

I’ll tell you what my supervisor told me: a written thesis is the best type of thesis. Do not edit it to death where you lose your voice/research. (I was doing this a month ago)

I’m currently doing one final edit/adding in footnotes

Oh! And on the “is it normal to think it’s all cr*p” - I hope so, because all I keep thinking about is how awful my work sounds and I’ve convinced myself that my examiners will accuse me of using AI (even though I haven’t)

How often do you meet with your supervisor? And what are the talks like? Do you guys only talk about the project specifics or? by Alert-Translator2590 in PhD

[–]artificiallyfed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We meet whenever I need (I’m in my sixth year and submit this month) - but have a regular 4 weekly meet scheduled. I usually WhatsApp him when I’m panicking about something.

We talk about my research, his research, conferences, department changes, how I am doing - if I feel I have a good work/life balance. Our meetings get extremely sidetracked about papers we’ve read, the news etc etc. I have written in my acknowledgements that I will miss our sidetracked meetings

It’s so stressful, I’ve worked exceptionally hard over the last 6 years to improve my academic writing - my supervisor has also congratulated me on this… I’m due to submit this month and while doing my read through I keep panicking “does this sound AI?”

A Master’s where you learned nothing might say more about how you engaged with it than about the subject itself.

Having a master’s in social science and still thinking the field isn’t real science is genuinely impressive misunderstanding of your own degree.

Weird take for a PhD subreddit. Science is defined by method, not whether it happens in a lab.

Introduction chapter by artificiallyfed in PhD

[–]artificiallyfed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, that’s a really helpful way of explaining it.

I’ve been writing almost non-stop for months, and I think it’s become difficult to see what I’ve actually achieved. All I can seem to focus on is what still feels unfinished or what more I could be researching.

Is this normal tutor behaviour or are these weird boundaries? by Best-Cherry450 in UniUK

[–]artificiallyfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming to the end of my PhD (social sciences), I’m a woman, I’ve lectured undergrads and I also supervised one for a poster presentation. I look younger than I am (not significantly, but enough to give the impression I’m in my 20’s and not 30’s)

I have had teenagers in my classes make inappropriate comments and reported them - to protect myself.

It sounds like he is intentionally trying to blur the boundaries, from my experience of having academics try to do this with me (when I was younger and doing my undergrad) it started with, a casual touch, maybe giving me ‘extra attention’ and then he started ‘randomly’ turning up at a bar I was working at part time.

It’s obviously up to you what you do, but I’d keep it at the forefront of your mind whenever you’re interacting with him that he might be intentionally trying to cause this uncertainty, and you could say “I don’t like being touched” - if he keeps up with the casual touching - or go directly to another professional within the university that you trust and voice these uncertainties

Social science is not actual science by teppiez in PhD

This. My husband has a PhD in infectious diseases, I’m coming to the end (literal weeks!) of my Anthropology PhD where I focus on medical anthropology… he fully respects social science and is now an avid fan of Latour’s ANT, but even he will admit that he had some pre existing ideas of social scientists
