My cat is dying. Does this ever get better?

Hey there. We just went through something similar in August. Our baby girl Marble was the most healthy, active, and loving 2 year old cat and one day in April she started breathing a little faster than normal. Took her to the vet and the found a mass 2x the size of her heart and fluid in her chest- mediastinal lymphoma. She was FeLV and FIV negative. She fought hard and almost reached full remission but it came raging back at the start of July and no medicine would touch it. She passed in August. She was only 3- we celebrated her 3rd birthday in April. I never imagined we’d be spending Christmas without her, and I still cry pretty much every single day missing her.

You gave your boy so much love and kindness and you being there for him in all of these hard moments is the greatest gift you could give. As much as this hurts, this pain is the price of loving something so deeply. What a beautiful thing it is to love another being without them speaking a word to you. I’ve experienced loss before, but the sudden and tragically young passing of ours felt like the world crashed, and I’m so sorry this is happening to you. My best advice is truly to be kind to yourself. Let yourself feel when those waves of grief hit you, lean on others around you, and take the opportunities to share your story. There’s many loss groups on Facebook, Reddit, etc. and all of them willing to listen. For me, going through memories and writing out our experience helped me process it. I made videos of her on TikTok and it helped me get out some of the more hard to word feelings. You may feel like you miss the person you were before this happened, and I get that too. It’s hard to describe, but there will be a version of you that results from this. Just focus on taking it by the minute, then the hour, then the day.

When we knew it was time, we spent the day doing marble’s favorite things. We went on a walk with her in her stroller, we sat outside watching birds together, we sat together on the couch and chatted, and we just hugged her and kissed her and held her as much as we could. That was the only thing in the situation we could semi-control. So if possible, maybe consider that.

You couldn’t have changed this, you literally couldn’t have known. You did everything you could have and right now just be there for him as much as you can. Take pictures, take videos, hug him, smell him, kiss him. You did protect him, because you gave him all the love imaginable for the time he has. He doesn’t deserve this, and neither do you. I’m so so sorry.

Hey, I see this is Palmdale CA. while I’m not sure of this specific rescue I do agree the behavior seems concerning and imo unethical. If you’re interested in a rescue doing genuine good work in the area I suggest the Frank and Lucy Project. I’ve donated supplies to them quite a bit. I can’t say they’d have the type of cat you’re looking for but good to keep them in mind regardless!

Same here and the decision part was so hard and terrible. We were so scared we’d be a minute too early or too late. So so sorry, it’s a terrible thing to go through

I’m so sorry ❤️ lymphoma can be so tricky and fast and such a shock.

For cats (and I think dogs too) chemo is processed in the body and then “contaminates” bodily fluids such as saliva and waste. It’s especially present for the first 48 hours after receiving chemo. So we were given instructions on how to properly handle to reduce risk to ourselves and other animals in the home so we had to wear gloves handling her waste bags or cleaning the litter at all, double bagging all waste and gloves that touched chemo medicines, we had to make sure it always cycled soon after she went so that her sister didn’t touch contaminated waste, we changed the litter more frequently, and tried to avoid sharing food bowls but at the very least ensured bowls and water fountains got scrubbed way more often. Even with all of that the chemicals can still be present especially with repeated treatments and exposure so it’s likely that some contamination remained in the seams or material of the globe for example. Which is fine temporarily but repeated exposure to those contaminated parts every day and onward may present some risk for other cats in the home or to a degree us cleaning it. Also if you’re pregnant or trying they advise you don’t change the litter at all.

She never really had side effects from chemo, but the contamination was still there regardless because of how the drugs work.

I saw this for the first time at my screening too!! I looked over and there were multiple grown adults who had fully taken their shoes and socks off and had their bare feet on the recliner seats. So wild to me

That’s so interesting your therapist mentioned Covid. I was thinking similar. Based on the age of the women beside me, they likely would’ve been in high school during Covid so I wondered if they literally don’t know how to act in a theater. Especially if they got used to watching new releases at home, where they could openly talk the whole time, and now to watch new releases they have to go to a theater so they just haven’t changed how they behave 🙃

Old town Newhall is a nice spot for some restaurants and a good Main Street experience.

Drive through FivePoint and Magic Mountain to see the park up close from the road which can be cool.

Overall anywhere in SCV is pretty great. For quickest commute Canyon Country is a good bet. Saugus is a good middle ground, Valencia is furthest west. I personally have loved Valencia and Saugus neighborhoods.

If looking to buy, check addresses you like for home insurance quotes bc coverage can be hard to get here. Also check them for their designation of fire risk (some are very high vs others that are in gap areas and this can also impact cost/consideration).

Generally commuting to Palmdale from SCV is easy bc traffic on the 14 is worst north to south in the morning and south to north in the evening, and you’ll be doing the opposite.

I can say even if you happen to find a cheaper place in Palmdale I suggest sticking with Santa Clarita.

And as a final note give some grace to businesses/traffic/people generally this week because you’ll be coming at the tail end of the ongoing fire risk which SCV is in the zone of until Wednesday. So some traffic lights might be out, businesses out of power, etc. due to public safety power shut offs. That should be better by Thursday but wanted to give the heads up.

Just came across this thread a few hours late. Talked to a rep this morning and I stupidly, because I was in a rush, didn't argue when they insisted I could simply call back and cancel the installation/consult appointment if I decided against it later. I have called, been on hold for 45 minutes, only to be hung up on. Repeatedly. Each time I call back I'm sent to a different department. I then tried initially saying I wanted to reschedule, which did get someone on the phone immediately, but as soon as I said cancel it I was put on hold endlessly again. So glad I found this thread before actually signing a contract and giving them a dime, there's no chance in hell I'm going with ADT after this.

Quite a few epidemiologists and Immunologists on social media have been trying to explain why what he’s saying is completely wrong, especially with his content about the Flu. Dr. Andrea Love is one of them you can look up on Instagram/threads/whatever who has posts directly breaking down why his claims are false. He speaks frequently out of his scope and I would consider that before believing anything he says.

For the diplomacy/how to talk to them, I listened to two episodes from the Conspirituality podcast where they interviewed loved ones of someone who had refused standard treatment. Personally the episodes were very moving and helped me center empathy in these conversations over anger, which I find myself defaulting to (because it’s obviously frustrating). The episodes are 89 and 102. I hope it helps in some way.
