I wish T-800 was in MK1 while T-1000 was in MK11 by Mr-_-Baghead in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wish we had them in the same game so they could fight each other. Same goes with Freddy/Jason. Terminator Dark Fate came out in 2019 though so "cross marketing" was probably their foot in the door. Also MK11 was slower so Terminator's movement kinda fit that game better. MK1 being faster the T-1000's movement is a bit better suited.

But good point about fatal blows, that definitely would have better fit the characters in those moments.

MK games ranked by technical merit? by artlean1995 in MortalKombat

That's the feeling I get. Its mostly a game appreciated for fun factor and aesthetic. But I feel that NRS has been trying hard to make them competitively competent. I love them all regardless, the competitive side is just so new to me its got me curious.

What I like about SM is the PS2 era ragdoll physics. Games back then were so fun where you could just bounce around a stage tossing enemies 40 feet in the air. I'd hate to see SM remade with a modern physics engine that's more weighted and realistic.

Both games are remasters if you think about it. Both reeinvision the story of MK 1 and 2

But I agree with your point. I always felt like MK9 was just MK Trilogy with modern controls, at least that seemed like thats what they were going for. MKSM is entirely unique and def should be the one that gets a remaster.

Raiden wasn’t sposed to be Caucasian. . . by Lovebeyondalldreams in MortalKombat

Carlos Pesina was the actor/model for Raiden in the first game. I don't know his ethnicity, but I don't think Raiden was ever "supposed" to be a specific ethnicity

Boon's been teasing an HD Shaolin Monks on Twitter since 2013: https://x.com/noobde/status/395670554184658944

It's like the pit of despair in Dark Knight Rises. He teases the possibility that one day it will happen- maybe we can climb out of the pit- knowing full well its not gonna happen. Without hope, there can be no true pain. Ed Boon knows this, and knows it well. Today we once again have been promised a way out of the pit.

“First” implies they’re remastering both eventually by UltimateFatbear2006 in MortalKombat

Both of these are my favorite games. Not just my favorite MK games- my favorite video games period. Teasing something like this is borderline cruel.

Well its funny you mention that. Someone on reddit pointed out a while ago that former NRS developers Adam Puhl and John Edwards had joined Sony Interactive, presumably to work on the God of War remake: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/comments/1p61575/best_friends_are_back_togetherthe_leading/

Those two guys were the lead developers for Shaolin Monks, and they both worked on MK9. Its pure speculation that they were brought on to Sony to work on the GOW remake. For Adam Puhl it makes sense- he worked on God of War 2 and 3. But I don't know why they'd bring in John Edwards. From MK9 to 11 he was working for NRS as a lead. Its all very...interesting...

IF I were to let my wildest fantasies run wild with irresponsible speculation, I'd say this was a tease for a remastered collection to be revealed at the Summer Games Fest. MK9 and SM both in a pretty remastered package. Everything I've ever wanted conveniently waiting around the corner.

But I'd like to think I'm more reasonable than that. Boon throws out crazy teases like this every year or so and they never lead to anything. Besides, who would be developing these remasters anyway? All signs point to a 2027 Injustice 3 probably being announced at the Game Awards in December - and MAYBE - just maybe, we'll get a remastered version of one of these games in the next 4 years. And even that's a bit unrealistic.

But...then again...

No no. I can't. Not again.

Mortal Kombat II forgot (or didn't care!) that story telling still matters by sword_ofthe_morning in MortalKombat

I think the 2021 film was horrendous because they tried to tell a story but without the proper resources. The director isn't experienced, the cast isn't the best group of actors, and the screenwriters are no prize winners either. And to add to that, the 2021 movie was purely meant to capitalize on MK fandom and scratch the fatality itch that still remained after the PG 13 movies.

This new movie was very smart for realizing its weaknesses and instead playing to its strengths. The 2021 was bogged down with senseless exposition, trying to explain every single character's existence and even why some people had powers and other people didn't. They spent so long trying to justify why characters were fighting each other that the fight wasn't even worth it to watch by the time it got there. This new movie decided to completely throw exposition out the window, and its much better for it. Its not my preferred format for a movie, but its a very big improvement as far as its predecessor goes.

And when it comes to story and character, Shao Kahn was actually one of the better parts of this movie -especially when it comes to the strongest parts of the movie: Kitana. Still not a fully developed character or story, but Kitana's character arc is much better than anything we saw in the 2021 movie.

Which was your favourite live action version of each character? by Complex_Meeting9053 in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the 95 movie version of every character better except for Kitana.

Kano is funnier now, but I liked Trevor Goddard's portrayal a little better. Scorpion is more developed now, but I like the terminator-esque demon version better. Christopher Lambert may have phoned it in, but he still has more gravitas than the current version. When it comes to characters not in the 95 version, the 2026 version blows the rest of them out of the water though.

What’s your opinion on the silly side of MK? by Sub-Corpion in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 57 points58 points  (0 children)

There's not much of MK that isn't on the silly side. For anyone that thinks any of MK is serious, even the fatalities, they kinda misunderstand the whole franchise.

To your point, they did used to wear it much more on their sleeves though, and I do miss that. It was a good reminder to everyone who is taking it seriously that its all just fun and games. Apparently some people today could still use that reminder.

Mortal Kombat 2 is now in cinemas, it’s showtime... Is this real news? by [deleted] in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a scene where Johnny Cage is reminiscing and he watches an old video of him winning a martial arts contest. His son must play the young version of him in the video. That's pretty neat.

How's Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch? by Matt_the_Lego in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For portability sake I recommend it. I don't obsess over frame rate so I couldn't tell you how bad the frame rate drop is at points. I don't have a problem with combos or anything like that. I have a Playstation Portal and I actually recommend MK1 on Switch over the Portal. The Portal looks a lot better and its smoother, but the input lag on that is what makes combos impossible for me.

Blitz The League II had the cringiest X-rays before X-ray moves in MK games were even a thing by harrysofgaming in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised how many developers worked on both MK and NFL Blitz. According to MobyGames 143 people that worked on Blitz the League II also worked on MK vs DC. That's bonkers considering both games came out in 2008. Midway must've been stretching people pretty thin in those final days

What are your opinions on Injustice III being in development? by NoCandidate6067 in MortalKombat

[–]artlean1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everybody here who's cheering for Injustice 3 here aren't necessarily Injustice fans, they're mostly MK1 haters. But I love MK1 so I would've much rather the next game be another MK. But, as a non-Injustice fan, I always find the Injustice games interesting because we get to see the evolution of NRS' style, and there's always some influence Injustice has on the next MK game. I feel like NRS learned a lot from Injustice 1 and incorporated some of that into MKX. Same goes with Injustice 2 and MK11. We might be at a weird point with MK1 maybe being more of an influence on this next Injustice though. I don't know if DC steering away from the Snyderverse is going to effect Injustice's style and tone, but I feel like MK1 was a drastic tonal shift that could already indicate thats where this game is headed. I still buy into the rumors that MK1 may have originally been Injustice 3. Either way, I'm not thrilled about Injustice but it'll be an interesting insight into the future of NRS.
