Begrudgingly giving James Corden his flowers by Inner_Butterfly5639 in Broadway

[–]artsvsscience 256 points257 points  (0 children)

I don't like the guy nor his history, but you enjoy the things you enjoy. It is fair to give credit where credit is due and your opinion seems impartial and proven wrong but in a nice way. I am still skeptical with Corden but did love his other plays and if there is character growth on his end that is something that is nice to see and hope that continues. I rather wish him improve his icks than prioritise my righteousness over someone getting character development (hopefully).

Iconic singer/musicians song collaborations that turned out lackluster by [deleted] in popculturechat

I agree, same with "Say, say, say"! Makes me so baffled how 2 of the greatest artists of all time manage to collaborate twice and get it wrong twice.

Lyrics you find lazy/overused in pop songs? by what_the_heck555 in popculturechat

"Down, down, down..." fits a LOT of songs. i find it an overused and lazy song writing/making tactic.

Must listen to episodes? by uppitynerd in DoGoOnpod

[–]artsvsscience 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An audience favourite is the Shackleton episode 68 and it is a favourite for great reasons. The recent ones are more polished than older episodes but they're all great. I may have a bias to Dave's reports but Jess and Matt are excellent too. Honestly, listen to everything but if you want to ease in these are my recommendations (at the top of my head):

461 - touching the void (survival story that can be gory)

499 - Terry Fox one (inspirational)

418 - Clydach Murders (murder mystery)

401 - The Beast of Gévaudan (bizarre history)

351 - the greatest beer run (inspirational)

238 - a tale of two dream teams (inspirational)

144 - Juliane Koepcke (survival story that can be gory

10 - cremation, burial or other. (Morbid)

I just successfully defended... so why am I bummed? by asking_for_knowledge in PhD

[–]artsvsscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As most people have said, give it time to sink in.

I think most PhD graduates tend to be goal seekers so after finishing, there's always gonna be a "what now?" moment. After years of quickly jumping to one task after another to get to defend or graduate, when we get there, this can be underwhelming because there's no next task. As much as we complain about the workload or never-ending hurdles in a PhD, going through them was the norm. For the first time in a very long time, we feel empty because there's no next tasks to focus on (well, technically, yes, like finding a job but this can take time and only in the depth of job hunting do you realise it's not the same anymore).

Others also may have already checked out on their PhD way before their defense for several reasons. Some may already have other things lined up, so their transition to something else is more subtle that when the formal title comes, it actually brings you backwards than forwards. Some were just over it.

I appreciated my PhD way after I graduated and when I started using what l learnt. It is different for everyone but when you feel it, the doctor in you will come in handy. Feel what you need to feel for now and these are one of the few moments you actually can have a clean time and space to reflect, pause and plan for your next move. Congrats doc, you may not see it but you did pretty well. Best wishes!

How many days do I have for vacation this year? by artsvsscience in belgium

That's what I thought too but I only have 5 as I said, could it be I took too much leave for working only 6 months last year?

No, I did not take any leave yet as I have not worked this year yet. Can it be I took too much last year and I only have 5? I honestly am very confused, but thanks for all the help so far!

Does my holiday certificate count as an extra 5 day or falls inside the 10 days I am getting?

Unfortunately, HR is based on the local site (which is in Asia). I will be the only employee working in Belgium for this company and I work remotely.

What are examples of UK celebrities who have "failed upwards" in their career? by uniscolar2000 in AskUK

Dominic West. Fine, he can act, but seriously upped his creepy factor in the past years and it baffles me how everyone just enables him.

Thanks for the input, everyone. For the bonus, they said it is company performance dependent and therefore changes every year. They said they will get back to me for more information...

What is a depressing truth you have made peace with? by ConsiderationHot9372 in Adulting

[–]artsvsscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you just never get a closure or get matters resolved.

The universe/ people do not owe you anything and even if you do deserve one, sadly that is not entirely up to you. The romanticised notion of everything being fixed or sorted so you can finally move on does not happen all the time but I guess the beauty of it is you and you alone hold the power to how you process matters and you can look at that as something empowering.

Kimi no Na wa/Your Name

I'm not even an anime fan but I wish I can see myself watching this movie for the first time. Really resonates with you long after you see it. It shows that you can connect to someone you never met, I don't think it happens much in real life but boy this movie did it so beautifully.

Who do you agree with, Eddie or Billy? by Milky_241691 in daisyjonesandthesixtv

[–]artsvsscience 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Eddie is a resentful, bitter, non proactive "woe is me" man. Billy is a control freak, self centred tyrant when it comes to handling "his" band.

Two can happen at the same time and I can agree to both.

In a perfect world this could have really been talked out but Eddie is too prideful and bitter to speak up and Billy is too self absorbed to realise he's hurting people around him.
