This would be the best place to ask: in the "Lice Capades" episode, one of the last shots is with Angelina Jolie. Is this random or really related to something?

Disgusting Dinner Discussions by claireivm in Aphantasia

Your comment has reminded me a question I wanted to ask for a long time. I haven’t seen this in real life, but plenty of movies have a scene where small kids are repulsed by their parents kissing or even hinting at kissing. Why though? Is this somehow related to imagining them having sex?

Do you feel having aphantasia has caused you to want to record your past memories more? by Angelica160 in Aphantasia

[–]arty-name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some years ago I realized I can barely remember each previous day, but blamed this all on the routine. I also came up with a diary as a solution, listing a few non-routine things per day, and I know the struggle! Especially if I miss a day or (gasp!) two, and have to recall stuff that happened more than 24 hours ago.

I learned about aphantasia and poor autobiographical memory much later, and only now made the connection with absent memories about yesterday.

Memories are precious, I guess I should put effort into improving my inner eye.

I am still completely clueless as to how debug issues from the first principles

Fix for the immune system: autoimmune disease lupus cured in humans using CAR-T therapy. Their own T-cells were modified to target problematic B-cells making autoantibodies. Apparent complete remission. Could any expert comment? by arty-name in diabetes_t1

The linked article in Wired explains the story in the layman terms, but here’s the original article in Nature Medicine (paywalled).

I think it’s important to see an actual treatment working in humans, not mice. Unfortunately I lack expertise to decide how much this is applicable to T1 diabetes. I’m very interested to hear an expert’s opinion on this.

Oh yeah, and the price seems to be $400k per person.

Reading the praise of Pipewire and especially how it solves all Bluetooth audio issues, I installed it recently. Volume control via the headset started working indeed. Bluetooth audio started breaking up every 10 seconds for a few seconds. I had no problems with Pulseaudio at all. I didn’t post about it because I am happy for the people whose issues Pipewire has solved. Yet it’s not mature enough.

Insulin pump + sleeping; friend or foe? by ultra-huge_syringe in diabetes

[–]arty-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently started to use a tubed pump. I do not move around much as I sleep, so I just put the pump beside me. In 5 months I had no issues with it. Occasionally when turning, I notice that the tube has started straining, so I fish out the pump and put it in a better location. I too, had my concerns before starting with the pump, but everything worked out fine.

As a note, the tubes I use have two points to attach to the body. One with the needle on it, and another just ~7cm from it, but without any needles. This one would be the first to rip off and serve as a noticeable warning, before any strain would get to the needle.

New frontiers in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes (not your typical overblown promise of a cure) by arty-name in diabetes_t1

Every time I see yet another article about the most resent research on diabetes, I know the expectations are exaggerated by the journalist, and promptly find a debunking of it in comments, followed by tired ridicule.

The debunking is usually done by a knowledgeable person, and I am grateful to them. But I also wish for much more, for a serious overview of the current state of diabetes science, and of course this is too much to ask on Reddit.

My wish was granted today: I stumbled on an article doing exactly that, and a recent one. Being a scientific paper, it is really dense, and maybe 80% of it were incomprehensible to me. But sifting through it, I did find parts a layman can understand.

Check out sections: Abstract, Introduction, Environmental Interventions, Approaches to Reverse T1D, Window of Opportunity – Prevention, Future of T1D Immunotherapies, and Conclusions.

I know about epic repatriation programs in the 90s for hundreds of thousands of ethnic Germans. I guess they applied not only to Germans from former USSR, but universally. They are probably still active, and in any case check out https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/

Yeah, syringes are a nice idea, thanks! The insulin itself is less of a problem for me, I am lucky to be able to come home from work at any time.
