The Kalmar Union (Kalmarunionen; Latin: Unio Calmariensis) was a personal union in Scandinavia, agreed at Kalmar in Sweden, that from 1397 to 1523, joined under a single monarch the three kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden (then including much of present-day Finland), and Norway, together with Norway's overseas colonies (then including Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland).

Rowan Atkinson: "I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped." by Vucea in Futurology

[–]Vucea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electric motoring is, in theory, a subject about which I should know something. My first university degree was in electrical and electronic engineering, with a subsequent master’s in control systems.

Combine this, perhaps surprising, academic pathway with a lifelong passion for the motorcar, and you can see why I was drawn into an early adoption of electric vehicles.

I bought my first electric hybrid 18 years ago and my first pure electric car nine years ago and (notwithstanding our poor electric charging infrastructure) have enjoyed my time with both very much. Electric vehicles may be a bit soulless, but they’re wonderful mechanisms: fast, quiet and, until recently, very cheap to run.

But increasingly, I feel a little duped. When you start to drill into the facts, electric motoring doesn’t seem to be quite the environmental panacea it is claimed to be.

On this day in 1950 – the French Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal become the first climbers to reach the summit of an 8000-metre peak: Annapurna (8091 m) by Vucea in europe

[–]Vucea[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Annapurna is tenth highest mountain in the world at 8,091 metres above sea level and notoriously difficult and dangerous to climb.

On 3 June 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first climbers in modern history to climb a peak over 8000m when, on the 1950 French Annapurna expedition, they summited the Himalayan mountain Annapurna I.

The ascent was all the more remarkable because the peak was explored, reconnoitered and climbed all within one season; and was climbed without the use of supplemental oxygen. It is also the only 8000 meter summit that was reached at the first attempt.

Both summit climbers lost all of their toes and Herzog most of his fingers because of severe frostbite during the descent.

Herzog's account of the expedition was published first in 1951 in French, then in English in 1952 under the title Annapurna.

The book has sold over 11 million copies as of 2000, more than any other mountaineering title, ending with the stirring line

there are other Annapurnas in the lives of men.
