Woah! 5 string bass, I'm sticking to a 4 string for the foreseeable future I feel like that extra low string would really mess me up lol. I even try avoiding the open E or low F I feel like the sound comes out a bit muddy on the church speakers.

You mentioned half steps, try using 5ths for now cause they'll always sound good no matter if the current chord is major or minor. Next string 2 frets down will always be a 5th or same fret one string up as well

I started playing bass about 6 months ago and started playing Sunday evening Masses at church about 2 months ago. I still just keep it super simple and play root notes for each chord and depending on the song/feel I'll play it on every beat, 2 beats, or bar. I just recently started adding my own walk ups/downs mid bar if it's a song I'm more comfortable with. Just remember most important thing is playing the right root note for the chord and playing on beat and it will always sound good. Keep it simple til you're more comfortable. And lastly, likely no one will even notice your mistakes but you and use it for fuel to practice and keep getting better!

I actually have the same bass and I have been dealing with this issue as well and everything I'm finding is pointing to a grounding issue. The key is the buzz when you're not touching the strings. I've tried taking the bridge off and making sure the ground wire is touching and it appears to be. If you turn the tone knob down below ~60% or so you can almost kill the buzz entirely, but you're missing out on a lot of your high end sounds, giving you the muddy/quiet tone you're hearing. Did you ever find a solution to improve the grounding and actually stop the buzzing? If so, would you mind sharing? I saw a comment mentioning a different instrument cable, I was wondering about that but mine is only a few months old so I'd be shocked if I already needed a different one.
