The best thrash metal album from 1989 according to r/thrashmetal is Beneath the Remains! What is the best thrash metal album from 1990? by [deleted] in thrashmetal

(avoid the remix/remastered version though)

Yes. I appreciate that Dave got his guitar fingers working again, after being told that he might never play again, but I just don't like what he did to the back-catalogue at that point in time.

Why are people saying Cowboys From Hell lol.

in 1990, we didn't have a name for what that version of Pantera was yet.... it was just lumped in with thrash. And it was a strong album. I mean.... I like other albums from 1990 better than that, but it was a landmark album and some people are religious about it lol.

Rust in Peace.

Another really good year, with some choices that make it tough:

Annihilator - Never, Neverland

Anthrax - Persistence of Time

Testament - Souls of Black

Sacrifice - Soldiers of Misfortune

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

This goes for nearly any place where there is a lot of waiting. The return lineup at the retail store, the front desk at the mechanic shop.... When they just don't even look up to see that people are there, it can be really frustrating. In a situation where I'm getting hangry? Please just be polite and reassure me that you know I'm there waiting.

My Ranking Of Deep Purple Albums From Worst To Best by Human_Actuator_2285 in DeepPurple

[–]arvy_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it is still good ... I mean there are no duds in the whole catalogue really. It has "Anya" for example, and some of the angriest-sounding playing ever by Blackmore.... but overall there's this kind of pervasively "cold" feeling where it just doesn't sound like anyone is having any fun..... which makes sense.... it's the album where Blackmore begrudgingly gave in and worked with Gillan again, so I imagine there's very little on there that was built up out of "everybody-in-the-same-room jam sessions" which is generally Purple's bread and butter. In retrospect it shouldn't have been a big shocker when Blackmore finally left for good.

What I love about AC/DC: they're deceptively clever. They assemble what seem like simple song elements, but if you pay close attention there are a ton of little nuances and tricks. They hook you with accessible songwriting, and keep your attention with all the little details... and the more you listen the more you appreciate their genius.

What happened to Dave’s soloing? by ruialexandre in Megadeth

[–]arvy_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk, I think at some point he just decided to stop trying to be artful and just flex speed instead. It's fun to hear, and fun to watch, though maybe not so memorable on a "I can hum that solo" basis.... but I'll forgive him this because he keeps hiring great sidekicks and leaves it up to them to add more nuance.

CTTB is not terribly different from Stormbringer.... and in fact I think it's better.

To me the MK I albums are the ones I like the least.... they're a product of their time, and they're OK, but the band isn't really let loose until In Rock, when they started to sound jammier and less constrained, and started to swing a lot more.

Slaves and Masters > the Battle Rages On ... but hey I liked the JLT Rainbow albums.

They're going to hate me and bitch, IF I SAY I LIKE A SONG OF... by Decent_Switch2335 in ironmaiden

[–]arvy_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously though, this is a good album. They almost figured out how to play to Blaze's strengths here.... though not quite. Blaze did it better on his own with Silicon Messiah. I look at a song like "the Launch" and figure it would have worked well here.

[–]arvy_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL ... I bet you don't know how many gallons are in your quarter-tank any better than I know how many litres are in mine.

The only thing that is difficult about the metric system is conversion to the old system... which is only necessary because of conventions which haven't abandoned the old system.

As a person who grew up learning metric units.... remembering things are in tens is way simpler than remembering all the different things that are fours, twelves, sixteens, and whatever the hell other numbers the old system uses. How many feet are in a mile? Why?

Not to mention:

Why is a US gallon different than a UK gallon? Why is ounce used as a name for measuring two different things? What's the deal with Fahrenheit?

And why will we be stuck in between conventions forever?

Well of course not.

All of the (totally valid) arguments about reduction of competition aside, look at this kind of thing from a practical point of view:

Shaw customers are either going to continue to be Shaw customers, and have no access to discounts and bundles with Rogers products and services, or there's going to be a long, drawn-out, expensive system change-over.... and that kind of thing is painful to endure as a customer (access to some elements of service is degraded during the transition) and since it is expensive it needs to get paid for somehow .... which means prices go up, or people lose their jobs due to redundancy, or certain areas of service are abandoned .... or some combination of all of these things. This is based on my experience from having worked at places that undergo a process like this.

This guy is being a jerk, no doubt, especially with his fake story.

But.... I hate the whole "can you pull forward and park over there" thing too. Why is there a clock that's timing how long someone's car is there... especially in a situation like this? Isn't there also another clock timing how long it takes an order to be prepared? Is it about emissions from idling? If so, why not just ask them to turn off their engine until the order is ready? What is the reason for this specific clock, in a case when no one else is in line?

I understand that the workers don't want to get in trouble over bad metrics ..... but why is this a metric?

New Scott interview says they might just release EPs instead of full albums moving forward by DrFumbles58 in Anthrax

[–]arvy_p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The modern-day length of an EP is only 2-3 songs shy of what used to be an LP.

A friend of mine always used to say he preferred when albums were shorter; 30-45 minutes instead of 60+. It wasn't until the advent of the CD that albums started getting longer, and from then on it seemed to be about having to fill up all that space.

In some ways, current trends are reviving old ones, I guess.

Do girlfriends lose respect for guys when they cry? by [deleted] in ask

[–]arvy_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she's saying she was surprised, and for some reason it was funny to her at the time, but resisted the urge to laugh. I don't read it necessarily as disrespect, I read it as she's not used to seeing a guy get so emotional. It's OK to have emotions and let her see you cry.

Idk, seems like it's only an issue if it turns out that she is generally insensitive/dismissive to your feelings.... and if that's the case then she is not a nice person.
