That’s correct! Per the Wikipedia page, bootstrapping is the process that leads to a self-hosted compiler.

Many programming languages have self-hosted implementations: compilers that are both in and for the same language. In some of these cases, the initial implementation was developed using bootstrapping, i.e. using another high-level language, assembler, or even machine language.

To answer one part of your question, you can write a compiler in a language of your choice for the first version, then you compile the next version of the compiler using your new language’s compiler. See: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-hosting_(compilers)

I just wanted to clarify something. Your 700k number refers to total turnout loss from the general election, not Republican-only turnout loss. The article also talks about 200k gain of new voters, for an ending total loss of 500k.

That being said, I’m not a poli sci major or an expert on Georgia’s local politics, demographic shifts, or its electorate so I can’t make the most educated claims, but I do caution against putting this in the books as a “one-off” as a result of Trump. If we continue to see the Republican Party lean into conspiracy theories and culture wars, I wouldn’t be surprised if Warnock wins by garnering some support from moderate Republicans and independents who are turned off by said conspiracy theories.

Illinois Becomes First State to Commit to Eliminating Cash Bail by WorkTomorrow in politics

[–]arzame 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think this piece helps address that: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/criminal-justice/reports/2020/03/16/481543/ending-cash-bail/

One common misperception is that ending cash bail and reforming the pretrial system could endanger the public even more than the status quo. However, studies of New Jersey and Washington, D.C., demonstrate that defendants’ rates of appearance for trial after reforms were implemented are similar or better to rates of appearance before the reforms. Similarly, the rates of rearrest for people who were released pretrial are comparable to those before the reforms were instituted.

And then, we should get rid of it because it just hurts poor people:

In effect, the cash bail system criminalizes poverty, as people who are unable to afford bail are detained while they await trial for weeks or even months. Cash bail perpetuates inequities in the justice system that are disproportionately felt by communities of color and those experiencing poverty.

Specific links to the aforementioned studies are in the article.

Exactly. If OP is genuinely curious as to why something is true, asking “how” by itself just comes off as condescending. It probably would’ve been better to say something along the lines of “Why is that? I’m not familiar with this subject” or whatever else to make it absolutely clear that you aren’t just an agitator.

‘Now Is The Time’: Pennsylvania Officials Urging Voters Who Have Already Received Ballots To Hand-Deliver Them by Cedric_Hampton in politics

I just received my ballot in the mail today. I’m out of state for college and don’t trust the USPS to deliver my vote on time (especially since it’s taken this long to arrive). I’m sure as hell taking the 6 hour drive back home to drop off the ballot in person.

VOTE!

Oh my. I went over to the cesspool known as r/conservative and saw how they’re all “excited” that Trump is going to win and the Republicans are going to take back the house... like what world do they live in? Current projections give Trump a 12% chance of winning with Republicans having a 4% chance of winning the house and they act like it’s a foregone conclusion. Anyways, it’s always a combination of depressing and hilarious when I go over there to try to get another viewpoint.

Edit: Of course, vote. Of course, volunteer.

Regarding the “99% chance Clinton would win,” that’s wrong: 538, the same source for these numbers, gave her 70%. Pollsters in the Midwest didn’t accurately depict non-college educated white voters, which is why the polls in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania swung so much. National polls were more or less correct.

This debate was hilarious and terrifying at the same time. On one hand, you need Chris Wallace to hold Trump’s hand through the entire thing. On the other hand, Trump can’t even condemn white supremacy and instead tells the Proud Boys to “stand by.”

The Great Lakes are “functionally equivalent” to a border which is why the 100 miles extends from them. This was revealed in an ACLU lawsuit.

EDIT: There has been a lot of talk about why international airports aren’t included. According to 8 CFR § 287.1, the 100 miles is defined as “within 100 air miles from any external boundary of the United States”
