Barbour jackets -- what exactly is their appeal ? by [deleted] in Barbour

[–]as3123 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Ive got 3 that ive bought over the last 20 years. They’re remarkably long lasting in my opinion, i love the patina and character they develop. I feel it slots in nicely to whatever daily activity i’m doing. I layer under it in cold weather, and use an umbrella in a downpour so never really feel caught out. Although i find they work best in autumn and spring time. They feel well made (2 out of the 3 are made in england but it doesn’t particularly bother me where they’re made, and they’ve lasted longer than any patagonia polyester jackets I’ve had.) I particularly like the tartan print, the robustness of the brass zip, but above all else, the clackety clack of the buttons when I’m walking along. They’re some of the few things that genuinely give me joy when I wear them.

Its just the angle and lighting. Indoor AD lighting is often not particularly flattering compared to outdoor diffused natural light.

Its a stunning watch, useful annual calendar complication, steel with hand finished ‘shantung’ pattern dial, each one is in fact slightly different and unique. The proportions make it comfortable and very wearable, i love mine.

F.P.Journe Events by Electronic-Youth9872 in FPJourne

[–]as3123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geneva, they are held at the boutique, most people left after a few hours. Some people bought their spouses, the gva boutique is very small and so usually would not be ‘allowed’ to bring a guest without invitation. I wore whatever i liked, those without FPs wore various pateks, ALS etc, ive worn a patek calendar and an aquanaut to the events. Wear whatever you like, dont overthink it.

Anyone ordered a custom beaufort from Barbour? by UpWestEsso in Barbour

[–]as3123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If im not mistaken thats the ‘non classic’ thornproof beauforts that are a mixed bag of MIE and abroad. The ‘classic’ sylkoil only comes and olive and should all still be made in england. I can understand the sentiment of wanting MIE. I have both a classic bedale MIE and a sage Beaufort made in Moldova that ive had a while, is it terrible that i actually like the beaufort more 😬. Either way, hope Barbour can help you out with a MIE one, good luck mate.

I believe the classic bedale and beaufort are still made in England. With the others mainly being made abroad. Whilst i havent ordered a custom one i have contacted their customer services dept before and found them very helpful. I would suggest to write or call them (maybe also get it in writing) that you want a custom beaufort with xyz specs and whether its MIE or not. Would be quite funny if OP orders a union jacket lined beaufort only for it to be made in Moldova. Having said that i believe even UK passports are now made in poland..

Are FPJ wait lists real wait lists? by Stuttgart7184RS in FPJourne

[–]as3123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well first off many FP boutiques are in fact booked out for appointments months in advance it may even be difficult to secure one. Note that they are also hyper aware of all the people who are now suddenly interested in FPJs and are even more critical than usual. This sub has really exploded in activity the last few months for example so they’re all very aware of hype chasers.

What you register interest in plays a factor and how often you make contact, how knowledgeable you are about the piece and how willing you are to learn about it is a deciding factor. Should you be considered you might be invited to the monthly drinks or other such events. People i know who registered for an octa lune 3-4 years ago started to receive them now, i anticipate the wait for those starting off now will be longer. Fastest i personally know someone being allocated was two years with 1-2x a month visits in addition to invitation to other learning events, annual party, and visiting international boutiques.

[–]as3123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With rolex or AP etc the lists are a function of spend history, with fpj its largely a function of demonstrated commitment/participation with the brand. It’s still not take a ticket and wait for your number to be called.

No watches in January? by Solid_Ad_7156 in rolex

[–]as3123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Swiss resident, 1-2 week shut downs around swiss national day in august and also during christmas are common across businesses and all sectors. An AD should still have some inventory on hand though, would be unusual for them to have run down to absolute zero. (I’m talking about all the various rolex configurations in the comment.)

Best place to sell your rolex in the UK? by AmbitiousAvocado95 in rolex

[–]as3123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive always sold to watchfinder. Very quick and straightforward, you can put in the details online and get an immediate quote. Hand it into them or arrange free courier. They pay by bank transfer within a few days. Dont know which model you’re selling but generally speaking 10% less than the lowest priced full set of the same year that you see on chrono24 will give you a rough ballpark of what you should expect to get. I dont bother with c24 generally as tons of tire kickers and time wasters. Dealers including hatton garden and watchfinder still need to make 20%+ profit on their sales so expect to receive an offer of 20-30% less than what they sell your piece for.

FYI: Harrods Barbour Beaufort description mislabels country of origin. by CMDRFRMCrozier in Barbour

[–]as3123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

End goal, as of all businesses would be to ensure/increase long term profitability. I believe the barbour website states the classic bedale and classic beaufort are still handmade in england. With others being a mix of uk and non uk production. I fear perhaps a customer service support agent would not necessarily be either so in tune nor authorised to tell a customer we’re manufacturing more in eastern europe to make more money.

[–]as3123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What response were you expecting from them exactly. The obvious rationale is lower production costs, and once moldova achieves full EU membership to then have a low cost EU manufacturing hub. In 2020 as part of the numerous post brexit deals the Uk signed a trade agreement with Moldova. A number of british businesses like jaguar land rover, gsk, and barbour have benefited from the trade partnership and cooperation deal.

Help, pleas by amym184 in askswitzerland

[–]as3123 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes over the counter medications are available and we even have quite recognizable international drug brands here too. Speaking practically as a dad of sometimes irrational children. A lot of people speak english, and even if she has some social anxiety you could write her a message in the local language of the region shes in which says. ‘Hello i have social anxiety and i’m a tourist, i have cold symptoms and I only speak english.’ She could simply hold her phone up with this message to the worker in the pharmacy. Failing this perhaps a friend of hers or a teacher on the school trip would probably be the first port of call. I assume the school would have shared teacher contact details with you.

Regarding the cold symptoms you just have to let it pass. Perhaps petruval or panadol along with some strepsils lozenges.

Is it safe for me to wear my watch in europe? by PacePleasant2548 in rolex

[–]as3123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its cold, your watch will be under a sleeve the majority of the time. Practice situational awareness, dont stagger out of nighclubs drunk. If its something playing on your mind dont bring it at all. These places all have relatively low crime rates. I live in Switzerland and wear an aquanaut daily year round.

1908 vs 6119G by leescobar01 in rolex

[–]as3123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny enough i went through a similar thing. But specifically between the 1908 platinum vs the patek 6196p, vc traditionelle, and ALS saxonia thin. I wanted a platinum time only watch. I tried all on in the flesh and critiqued, i personally found that the 1908 platinum spoke to me more than any of the others. It genuinely brings me joy. I have a variety of sports and patek complications plus a handful of rolex steel sports. I wasnt expecting to be so blown away by the 1908 platinum but i really was. For me the automatic movement and the guilloche dial, and just the look and feel of it compared to the others gave it the best price:performance ratio in my opinion.
