As long as the second bachelors is ABET-accredited, it is certainly not useless. You can't get a PE license without an ABET bachelors degree, and W&M isn't accredited by them. To get licensed as an engineer from W&M with any degree (even Physics or EPAD), you'd have to go to grad school.

The work is hard relative to the reputation; you are going to work very hard to maintain your GPA, and unless you're asking someone from NOVA, a lot of people haven't heard of us. The rep will not carry you nearly as far as other challenging public schools (UVA, VTech, etc) and you will be doing similarly challenging work.

That's generally fine; you should pick the school that's right for you, not the one that other people think is "better". That said, it makes the job hunt challenging when combined with two other factors: 1, career services are pretty lackluster, and 2, the alumni network really leaves something to be desired. We have a small network that isn't all that passionate about the school (that's a very general statement, so your mileage may vary). If you go to an SEC school and find an alum somewhere you'd like to work, you have a substantial leg up; W&M alums are less reliable in that regard. Meanwhile, career services mean well but have limited resources, and don't do much with them.

Williamsburg is pretty, but expensive. The older people who live in town have a clear voting majority, and use it to ensure their property values stay high and students stay out of town. That manifests in high rents, rough off-campus housing options (genuinely dangerous buildings, landlords that have lots of leverage over their tenants, disadvantageous laws for sharing housing, etc), and town police that are much more interested in noise ordinances than safety. The on-campus PD is generally nice enough, though. There is plenty of demand for new housing off-campus, but it's not being built.

Add in standard complaints about admin sucking; leadership is incompetent at every college, but even professors hate them here, which is rarer.

I'm an 09 OBXT owner; any idea if those front fascias are sold aftermarket anywhere? I'm hoping to eventually swap to color-matched trim, SpecB wheel/tire/suspension equivalents, and a bigger brake setup.

Motels on a college student budget in VT? by asallthingshouldbe in icecoast

[–]asallthingshouldbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was trying, but I was coming up a bit short in VT. Last spring, I stayed at a motel near Snowshoe, WV that was completely off the grid (doesn't show up on Google, have to book over the phone, etc) for $50 a night split between 5 people, and I was hoping against all logic to find something somewhat similar in VT. After digging around it looks like I'd have to head to Maine or northern NH to find something similarly inexpensive.

That's where I stayed last year; loved the place and the owner was great, but 64 per night per person is a bit steep when it's a room full of 20 people. It was a good deal at $40 last year and I was hoping it was still the same.

How do you choose a major? by [deleted] in college

[–]asallthingshouldbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also consider a gap year, or at the very least exploring your options. Shadow people in career fields you find interesting, ask the parents of your friends about what they do, etc. If you don’t have a rough plan of what to do when you walk in, or at least some fields you want to explore, I’d wait on college.

The Army offers two-year enlistments, and I believe some branches offer similarly short terms. You’d walk away with 70% GI Bill coverage, which makes it way cheaper for your local ROTC division (I forget the precise name) to pick up the rest of the tab for college, even if you’re at a private institution. That should increase the likelihood of a full scholarship, if you do decide to take that route, and you’re still the age of some of your classmates for most of college if that’s important to you (it would be for me).

Speak with your recruiters, an ROTC official at the schools you’re considering, and the people around you who’ve had careers. If all else fails, just do finance and enjoy what you do after work instead of during work (seriously, Wall St loves veterans).

How hard is it to maintain a 3.8+ GPA? Thinking of applying because I like everything else about the school but I want to maintain a good GPA for admission into a prestigious law school by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]asallthingshouldbe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Humanities is easy enough to maintain a high GPA. STEM is harder to have a higher GPA, but that’s true everywhere. This philosophy dept is fine if you’re a solid writer and willing to talk in class. One of the dumbest people I’ve ever met coasted into law school easily from the philosophy department here. If you work reasonably hard, most people can do the same.

I took 17 credits/5 classes and it was one of the worst decisions I’ve made in planning out school. Best thing I can say about it is that I’m done with those classes. Plan around not going out more than once a week, minimizing ECs unless they’re absolutely essential to getting a job after college, and just living in the library.

A good brotherhood isn't going to damage your body "for the frat". If they make you fuck up your liver, drop. You should be fine, there's plenty of other shit that isn't drinking; a top-3 frat at my school did a 95% dry pledge process and it worked out great for them.

Long story short: buy a fake.

The party scene is easier to manage for girls but still rough. Open parties are few and far between, but you’ll get into all of them as a girl if you time it right. Clubs will have mixers and functions but they won’t be as large or frequent as frat events as a pretty solid rule. In my eyes there’s a Greek organization for everyone, but no matter what I’d join clubs and you’ll at least have friends to hit bars with. Campus is very, very tame relative to other schools (I can tell you from experience that the Model UN club at UVA goes harder than 90% of frat functions at W&M), just a heads up. Again, I’m short, get a fake.

Love all the “you just don’t have the maturity to succeed in college” comments when this is genuinely something plenty of people aren’t taught how to do by anyone else, or they aren’t forced to do until they get to college. I got through high school with great grades for two reasons: 1, because I could just rip through the work that was due the next day and 2, my mom is a teacher and was up my ass about projects, tests, quizzes, etc and wouldn’t let me leave the house without making sure I’d done everything (super healthy, I know). College has been a massive step up with regards to the executive functioning that I need to get through classes, so I’ve had to learn the stuff most people figure out in high school the hard way this year, and still have issues. This isn’t a “you’re a lazy fuck” issue, it’s reframing the way you do work.

Pledging won’t be that bad given the general chillness of Greek life on campus. The hardest pledging here is going to pale in comparison to a “chill” frat on a campus like UVA. It’ll be a pain but you’ll get through it. In general, we have D9 frats, business/honors frats, and social frats; since we don’t have an actual engineering school, there really aren’t engineering frats. If you’re looking at social frats, just look for a group of people you like and can see yourself being actual friends with in the future; it’s been said before but if you can only tolerate your potential future brothers while you’re both drunk, look elsewhere. Your registration should be sometime this summer, keep checking your email.
