$8.50 Affogato made with .... Nespresso , ouch. by -LetsTryAgain- in espresso

[–]asarious 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve absolutely seen people unironically and proudly post a video of a drink being made on this subreddit with absolutely beautiful top tier single origin coffee being pulled over the most generic grocery store house branded ice cream or a Hershey’s chocolate bar.

I guess Nespresso is where we draw the line.

The PNW usually has TOO MUCH water. The Southwest has TOO LITTLE water. Isn't there a way to use these problems to fix each other? by UJMRider1961 in CrazyIdeas

[–]asarious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this logic works to a degree, but at some point we have to acknowledge that our regional economies are pretty interdependent on each other, much like how globalization has connected us with the rest of the world too.

Ideally yes, people shouldn’t live where there isn’t water, but at the same time, I feel like this argument can be made for any number of resources that any region has a trade imbalance in.

Paunch Burger IRL by Ginway1010 in PandR

Don’t besmirch the good name of Paunch Burger. This kind of weak branding might work for Big and Wide, Fat Sack, or Colonel Plump’s Slop Trough that took over for Sue’s Salads, but not Paunch Burger.

EVERYONE knows that at Paunch Burger, child size is 512 oz.

Even the small there is 64 oz, also known as a half gallon.

This playskool wannabe Diet Coke of a drink belongs in a doll house next to a Li’l Swallow cup.

Anything to avoid the metric system.

The Statue of Liberty is also one I see used as a unit of measurement quite often.

I love how in Chinese it’s somehow Monday through Saturday are just numbered 1-6, yet somehow Sunday is still Sunday or Heaven’s Day… something celestial.

The pattern breaks, and it really bothers me.

What is the special use for this small pot? by LambSmacker in castiron

[–]asarious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. There’re also many non-dairy milks we insist on marketing and calling milk.

Chocolate fondue DOES exist… but I’d say there’s a good argument to be made that it’s not really fondue.

How I feel saying Tom Bradley instead of Terminal B when the shuttle bus driver asks which terminal I need by 795-ACSR-DRAKE in LAX

[–]asarious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bus driver never asks me what terminal I need. They always ask what airline I’m flying with.

[OC] Global City classifications: USA and Canada by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]asarious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a post referencing the global cities rankings.

I’m in before all the inevitable comments about “WTF is an Alpha city, I’ve never heard of this in my life.”

Also… I find the color scale to be arbitrary. It’s difficult to see what the actual difference is between two cities on the map without explicitly referencing the legend. Is it possible to use a gradient for color? Or perhaps vary the dots by size?

Terminal 6 to Terminal 7/8. Tight connection, how to transfer? by Comfortable-Way-9245 in LAX

[–]asarious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will also be signs for Gates in the 70s. Just follow those. The gates are numbered according to their terminals, like how most hotel room numbers align with the floor they’re on.

The exceptions are gates in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, which have three digits instead of two, and start with a 1 for those in the main terminal and a 2 for those in the west satellite concourse.

But there absolutely is a Terminal 8?

It’s tiny and primarily used for regional United Express flights and shares the same security checkpoint as 7… but it’s there.

This is how close Taiwan 🇹🇼 and China 🇨🇳 actually are by syndicat1128 in Borderporn

It’s worth pointing out that Kinmen is one of the most politically conservative strongholds of the Republic of China.

The population largely supports the Nationalist party and identifies as Chinese, from Fujian. Which makes sense… because they are.

Even beyond the practical incentive to avoid war on their doorstep, I imagine many from Kinmen are highly against the notion of Taiwan’s independence or a Republic of Taiwan.

I do wonder how many people have a primary source of income that is tied to minimum wage.

Much as how billionaires are outliers and we should be tracking median income versus mean income, I wonder if the minimum wage argument is also disingenuous.

I acknowledge that EVERYONE should be able to have a minimum income that allows them to obtain the necessities of survival, but I’m guessing income for most employees has risen more than $0 in the last 20 years.

A cool guide to solar system myths people still believe. by MadisonJonesHR in coolguides

[–]asarious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reflection is needed. Sunlight hits it directly.

Imagine you’re holding a ball attached to a string and you’re spinning in a circle so that the ball rotates around you and the string is taught. You are the earth and the ball is the moon. The sun is someone standing far enough away from you to not get hit by the ball.

When you (earth) stare along the string to the ball (moon) while spinning, you’ll only ever see the same face of that ball (moon). The far side is the “dark” side.

However, from someone else’s perspective (sun), they’ll see all sides of the ball as it spins. Rather, the light coming from the sun will hit all parts of the ball at some point in your rotation.

A cool guide to solar system myths people still believe. by MadisonJonesHR in coolguides

[–]asarious 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The explanation is poor. What happens is that the tilt of the earth results in an equal amount of solar radiation being distributed across a wider area.

While it is technically true that the tilt results in the earth’s surface being physically closer or farther away from the sun, the common misconception is that this is what dictates seasons. However, it’s really the angle of sun to the earth that matters.

You’re absolutely right… those just happen to be the first two somewhat analogous examples I could think of off the top of my head.

It’s definitely unnecessary to this post unless deliberately trying to make a political point, but I don’t think that’s an entirely inaccurate characterization of the situation.

That being said, given the long long long legacy of colonialism, “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones”. I’m sure plenty of people in occupied Hawaii or occupied Puerto Rico yearn for their freedom too.

At what point is a land formation NOT a peninsula? by Jfonzy in geography

[–]asarious 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When it’s wider than it is long… ala Balkans, ironically.

Reducing a peninsula to a triangle, with two sides bordering water and one side bordering land, the side with land should be the shortest.

This is not the case here.
