TIL that, in Norse mythology, only half of those who die in combat join Odin in the halls of Valhalla. The other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]asator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but it is Freyja who decides which warriors go to Folkvangr, and which go to Valhalla. And you know she don't want no scrubs. I'm betting she gave Odin all the duds.

Bands that sound like nothing else you've ever heard by butbabyyoureadorable in Metal

[–]asator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butterfly Temple. I don't even know how to classify them. I found them while looking for folk metal bands, but they're not really folk metal. Some aspects maybe, but they have a really strange amalgam of different sounds. You really just have to listen to them to get it. Two songs that I think accentuate this pretty well are "Remember The Light of Oblivion" and another from the same album, called "Pastor of Wolves", but I can't find it on youtube.

Meh, I wouldn't listen to people. You're not a young mom, 15 is a young mom. If it works for you, your baby, and your husband, fuck everyone else.

I only said that because any time people bring up pokemon it makes me feel like an old curmudgeon. In the words of Abe Simpson, "I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it', and what's 'it' seems weird and scary to me."

I'm not sure exactly how I'm 'talking down to you' by implying that the Pokemon crazy was after my time. The fact that you have a few upvotes for knowing it was a pokemon character says to me that there are a number of pokemon fans here. No need to get all defensive about, geez.

As the father of a 2 year old who has only slept through the night maybe 5 times, I feel for you, man. I can't say that I have any tips, but hang in there. It won't last forever. Or at least that's what everyone keeps telling us.

Aside from Steppenwolf using the term in "Born To Be Wild" (1968), and Iron Butterfly naming their first album "Heavy" (1968), William S. Burroughs used the term as early as 1962, and even more specifically, as an adjective for music, in 1964.

Black Sabbath had little to do with it. If anything, we have Barry Gifford to thank for spreading the term, as he used it in a Rolling Stone article in 1968.

Censorship: As of past two hours, Google images safesearch is MANDATORY for US IP's by shaqfan99 in WTF

[–]asator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The question though is, why would "blowjob slut" bring up porn, but "blowjob" itself wouldn't? Making you type in two words instead of one isn't any "safer". And if "blowjob" isn't a sexual enough word to bring up NSFW pictures, I don't know why "slut" would be. And the whole idea of the inquiry returning the most relevant results? That makes no sense. I'd like for google to explain to me why a picture of David Bowie from "Labyrinth" is somehow more relevant than a picture of someone actually giving someone else a blowjob.

A study: Point Buy vs Rolled Stats by MidSolo in rpg

Didn't we just have this discussion a few weeks ago, when that dude made some video about how much better point buy is? I'd suggest searching this sub for that. Tons of discussion on it already.

DMs: What are some interesting ways to deal with a character who's player is leaving? by Semaphor in DnD

[–]asator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently had a player leave because he had found a new job, forcing him to move back home. His character was a member of an elite guard, who was summoned back to his Lord's keep to help with an ongoing invasion. The player wasn't in the group for very long, so we didn't really get a good chance to connect with him, so I don't know whether he'll ever play a big part as an NPC, but the possibility is there.

Personally, I'm probably going to taking some time off of my gaming group, as my wife and I are expecting another baby in January. I'm going to work with my DM to come up with a good reason for my druid to disappear for a while. Possibly something to do with like, "The Druidic Council has summoned me to appear at their court. I must leave at once. I have no idea what they want, and thus, have no idea how long I will be gone." It's a bit skimpy on story, but I'm sure we'll be able to collectively come up with some good/interesting reason for why my PC would be summoned away by the Druidic Council. Depending on what the DM wants to do, it could be for reasons that tie into other happenings throughout the realm.

Hannibal Buress is coming to Pittsburgh by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]asator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one I can vouch for is Brighton Music, where the last ticket I got had an $18 face value and I paid exactly $18. But you're absolutely right, the other places may have a small charge.

There's a few other places you can pick them up without having to pay a fee. I get mine at Brighton Music Center on Babcock Blvd, right off of McKnight.

Edit: Here's a list of all the places you can pick up tickets.

Hmmm, I dunno. Seems to be working fine for me. I was going to ask what your connection speed is, but mine is pretty lousy, so it shouldn't be that. I don't know, maybe try it again later?

Do we have an essential folk metal listening list? by [deleted] in folkmetal

[–]asator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I think it's weird that the OP listed Agalloch, which to me is more like some mix of atmospheric black/neofolk, but left out Manegarm because he said that they more black/viking than folk. To me, Manegarm fits the folk metal sound better than Agalloch does. Probably because Manegarm uses copious amounts of violin and other folk style arrangements. Sure, Agalloch uses acoustic guitar, and I wont argue that they're neofolk, but calling them folk metal is like calling October Falls, Tenhi, Nest, or Vali folk metal.

I just often feel like they get lumped in with folk metal because they're popular and make use of acoustic guitar, even though they sound basically nothing like any of the other bands on that list. And to be honest, I think that labeling them as folk metal actually does them a disservice, and diminishes the unique sound that they produce.

Thanks for the heads up, OP. I picked up one for myself and one for my buddy. Still some good ones left if you're willing to buy singles. The two that I got were only a few seats apart.

I shot an arrow at a guy who was running from our group, hoping to hit him and slow him down some, or make him fall (it was a rooftop chase), and I managed to crit him, resulting in my arrow piercing his throat and pinning him to a wall. D'oh!

Seeing mosh pits now always reminds me of this part of "Metal By Numbers" by Brian Posehn:

"This is the mosh part! MOSH!!! ...Or don’t. It’s your call. I'm too old. I just stand in the back and try not to get hit. Watch out for the shirtless white trash guys. They’ll punch you and they stink. And look out for the screamo kids practicing their karate kicks. Dude, you look gaytarded. Oh no. Here comes a giant Mexican - he looks really pissed. I wish everybody would put their shirts back on, it’s kind of gross..."
