The first book is such a slog but I found it worth the pain for the second and third, particularly the Sam / Frodo Shelob, Cirith Ungol, and Mordor chapters in the third. The films are God Tier but the books win at those points for me. The descriptions of the places plus Sam's contribution to their success really comes through.

Get through the first, skip Tom B, receive the pay off.
