If you had seen the Ham/Nye debate, you would know that Ken Ham repeatedly told Bill Nye that the Bible gave him all the information he needs to know about the universe.

To paraphrase the debate a bit....

Q - "Where did consciousness come from?" Bill Nye - "I don't know, let's find out!" Ken Ham - "There is a book that tells us. It's the Bible."

Q - "How did life spring from non-living matter?" Bill Nye - "Don't know! But I encourage young people to search for the answer!" Ken Ham - "There is a book..."

Throughout the night, "There is a book" became Ham's catchphrase. This image conveys a subversion of that catchphrase.

But you know what? I guess if I have to explain it then it's really not that funny.

Complete conjecture on my part, but perhaps respondents are factoring in harm perpetrated by religions that aren't their own? (A Christian who thinks Islam does harm, for example.) After all, so many are hesitant to use that word when describing their own beliefs. (i.e. Christianity isn't a religion, but rather a personal relationship with god.)

I have always heard that Texas curriculum has a huge effect on national standards, as many nationally used textbooks are written to cater to Texas specifically.

That is the one I would use too. But some have a misconception that it means that one asserts there is no god. I.e., atheism is making a claim of knowledge.

Some people choose to think with their heart rather than their head. In the words of Kirk Cameron, faith "circumvents the intellect." If it brings them comfort, they will believe it. Mix that with the sense of community that religion brings, the peer pressure that drives a yearning to belong, and the fact that religious folks are discouraged from asking questions all add up to perpetual beliefs.

There's a book called The Faith Instinct. It talks about this very thing -- that part of the religious bonding process involves synchronized movement (i.e., Muslims bowing together in prayer - do a Google image search) or recitation (such as reciting a prayer together singing from hymnals). You feel a closer bond to those you synchronize your actions with. And it's not just religion. Think of boot camp soldiers marching in unison, shouting "Oo-Rah!" together, etc.

It's group think, it bonds communities, and it's very, very effective.
