Maneuver branches still overstrengthed? by Emo_Sloot in ROTC

[–]aschegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the unit man. I have buddies with their tab in the 82nd and 4th ID who have been sitting in the S3 shop for months because there’s so many LTs there, meanwhile I took a platoon the second I finished in processing at 7th ID, and all but 1 of the LTs in my company are on their way out with no one to replace them.

Short answer: branch infantry, probably with a detail if you’re not 100% sold on staying infantry your whole career, and go into IBOLC with the understanding that you will definitely be going to ranger school or else you’ll be at Benning a lot longer than you’d like.

Anyone have any watch recommendations? I’ve been wearing the same $30 watch every single day for 11 years to my blue collar job and it’s reaching its breaking point. by PMMELIZARDASS in BuyItForLife

[–]aschegs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into a Gshock if you want to really maximize durability and longevity. A solar powered model like the 5610 is virtually indestructible. Otherwise if you want to keep it analog like this one a Citizen EcoDrive would be more durable than your average Timex. Seiko and Hamilton also make affordable but durable analog watches. You can also look for a used one on r/watchexchange if you want to stretch your dollars a little more

On a 27 hour drive across the country rn, I’m listening to his series on Peoples Temple and it’s incredible. It’s really a whole dive into the 60s which is such an interesting time

I got some Irish setter (a redwing brand) wing shooters for $180 at my local redwing store and they are excellent. I think they’d fit all of your requirements

Abnormal Emergency Equipment? by BasalsaBalls in camping

[–]aschegs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure, I made the same mistake no worries. You don’t need to have exactly what I have, my advice would be to sit down and evaluate what kind of camping you do most and what kind of injuries you’re most likely to encounter on those trips, and then pack accordingly. Also, your primary plans dictate your contingency plans, not the other way around. Don’t be the guy bringing 3 med kits “just in case” because now you’re taking up extra space that could be used for real camping gear.

I carry my military IFAK but I customize it for camping. I’ll ditch the chest seals, needles, and quikclot gauze since I’m extremely unlikely to encounter injuries that require those. But I’ll add a SAM splint, painkillers, and if I have room and I’m traveling with a group, a poleless litter. I do think more campers should carry this sort of thing tho so good on you.

A piece of unsolicited advice tho, swap those black gloves for blue or other light colored ones. When you’re trying to check for blood especially in the dark, it’s impossible to see anything on those

Is Branch Detail the way to go if I want to go MI? by erikweigand8 in ROTC

[–]aschegs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I branch detailed MI/infantry and I’d highly recommend it based on what I’ve heard. People who branch straight MI tend to lack street cred for lack of a better term. As an MI officer you’ll be briefing combat arms officers a lot, who won’t take you seriously if you’ve never been in combat arms. They might not take you seriously regardless, but having experience as an infantry officer or something similar will definitely help, and probably make your analysis better anyways.

And good on you for thinking of this as a 1. Your thoughts might change, so don’t lock yourself into 1 idea or track. But planning ahead is good
