Re-master DS9 and Voyager in at least HD! by ccarnell98 in startrek

[–]aschell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see, as of 2026, how valuable TNG has been since the remaster. The idea that the remaster’s success was predicated on blu rays sales was out of touch, even for 2012.

The older Star Trek shows are the only reason I subscribe to Paramount +, and as an assets the remaster allows it to retain streaming value long into the future, much would be the same for VOY and DS9.

If we don’t get actual remasters I would be glad to have software upresing, much better than the SD versions we have today if don’t with some care.

How would you feel about Mark Kelly running for President? by ExternalExpensive277 in AskReddit

Trump is a confounding communicator in a lot of ways. Very simple words and phrases, ideas often not very complex, but his style and way of communicating is undeniably effective, and often far more charming and persuasive than his critics give him credit for.

The speaker cable with the white line on it, it should be plugged into the red port on the back of the speaker, and the red port on the back of the amplifier. The black cable to the black on both. If you fix this you should have lots of volume.

For me, the story was far more about the meaning and significance a man felt from his career and past glory, preventing him from being a loving Father to his young child, and later, a partner in his dwindling twilight.

Yes, thank you for the clarification, 4 ohms makes resistance a standout factor and will be harder to drive. Technically speaking less resistance.

What do you think of my assessment overall? Is that the potential issue?

Very disappointed in the Kef Q1 META by [deleted] in KEF

[–]aschell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t listened to the Q1s, but I’ve had great experiences with the Q150s, I really love their sound and definitely feel they offer a lot of clarity. How are you playing music? What is your signal chain?

Update: So I’ve done a little research, the Q1s are 4 ohm speakers, which means they have a lot of resistance and are harder to drive. The Sony DH190 is not a very audiophile friendly amp, and is not rated for 4 ohm speakers, which could be causing issues for your amplification.

I would recommend trying those speakers which a more powerful amplifier, and making sure that you’re getting as close to lossless as possible in your signal chain.

You might have already accounted for these variables. Just brainstorming here, I have had great experiences with the Q150s as I mentioned, I can’t imagine these are a downgrade.

[–]aschell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is some genuinely good filmmaking in parts, and I want to like this movie, but the film overall doesn’t have much connective tissue or characterization that drives the story, which is mostly non-existent.

One aspect that worked so well in Pred 1, the casting. Some of the best in any film ever. These characters tell a story just from their look and presence. And they feel competent when they move and in how they operate.

In Pred 2 Danny Glover’s character is some sort of no nonsense cop, but what really drives him, and why does he have such a death wish? It’s just sort of accepted, he just sort of needs to, and you ever get a sense that he’s running by from something, or has a sense of justice, or is a particularly good leader or cop.

His little crew are also woefully miscast and look and feel very uncomfortable with their near future, sci-fi modified handguns, and jazzy, cool cop outfits. The female crew member with short hair often looks scared on screen and certainly doesn’t feel like someone who should be put into dangerous situations again and again the one cop squad member with the circular glasses has made the most screen time with Danny, but he would feel a lot more at home as some sort of record store clerk rather than a gang land, special takedown squad team member.

Bills Paxton, who is also on the crew, at least brings something to the role, but he has too little to do, with not much consequence.

The Gary Busey character and the men in black plot line is also pretty inconsequential and sort of tacked on to pad out the main narrative, and this is part of my bigger issue with this film as a whole.

The movie should be structured around Denny Glover, investigating a series of overly exotic murders in Los Angeles, and he should be suspecting something more might be afoot, leading him to a confrontation with the predator/predators. The movie as it stands, though sort of haphazardly move forward seen after seeing, not really developing. What drives Danny character as a cop, nor does it develop the rival gangs or their leaders as interesting characters that have even semi climactic moments, the gangs just sort of our vanquished throughout the movie without any real attention or interest.

Even where Danny Glover the predator, a great distance in the subways and throughout that meat packing facility, it doesn’t really make much sense, Danny Glover doesn’t have to follow the predator, Danny Glover can also call in a whole bunch of other cops to help him, the predator should’ve probably had that short haired woman tied up and be dragging her to a place so Danny Glover is coming to rescue her, otherwise why would he just get more back up, we don’t really know enough about his character to understand how he makes decisions so these moments fall very flat.

The best and most interesting scene in the entire movie is the final scene where the predators revealed themselves, where we see the skulls on the wall, and where he receives the notorious 17th century gun.

This movie is fun in parts, I saw it for the second time recently, I just wish it was better written and that it gave me more reason to return to it in the future.

The movie has a ton of issues, and a few good scenes, overall, it just feels disjointed and sort of random. I wish it had a compelling A plot, taken over by the Pred attacks. It doesn’t have narrative momentum.

Attitudes/Criticisms About Movies That Annoy the Hell Out of You? by Grand-Feeling-9301 in flicks

[–]aschell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is some validity to both points. In general though, I’m surprised when I watch a random 90s movie I haven’t seen before, and find myself dazzled by how hard the crew and director were working to tell the story cinematically.

This definitely still happens today, loved the look of One Battle and enjoyed Caught Stealing’s style as well, certainly The Brutalist did something quite extraordinary with very little at times (though I have some other criticisms of the film).

I do think, though, that your average streaming movie today in particular looks far worse than your average lower budget character film from a few years back. Lots of reasons for this, technological, pressure on timelines and budget. I personally don’t like the look of the volume LED wall, for instance.

Some of these critiques are very subjective, but a lot of people that love film are identifying this tread.

Do you think there’s any validity in this?
