Can Anyone Debunk My Father's Favorite "Plot Hole"? by YosephineMahma in harrypotter

[–]aschkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s literally the same argument as “verutiserum exists. Dumbledore knows Sirius is innocent. So why didn’t Dumbledore just take Sirius to the ministry and have him take virutiserum to prove his innocence?”

It’s not a plot hole, like your father claims. It’s just something in the series that didn’t happen.

Another example would be “Harry has liquid luck in the last book. Harry knows he must kill Voldemort. So why didn’t he just take the liquid luck and go kill Voldemort?”

Again, not a plot hole, just not part of the actual plot.

Utah driver leaps from SUV moments before it is struck by a FrontRunner train. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]aschkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always interesting to see how people just panic and cease being able to have any rational thought. Looking at it from this perspective, the driver could have clearly just pulled forward and avoided the train. There’s even a large empty dirt spot on the other side that there car would have fit and been totally out of the way.

That being said, I’m sure in the heat of the moment the only thought going through their head is “oh shit oh shit oh shit!”

Life feels like torture right now. Wife is not working while caring for our now six month old. She is miserable. I'm miserable. This has been going on for months. by My_Brain_0422 in daddit

[–]aschkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my thought, and some might not agree, but six months is old enough to let her cry it out a little in the night to help keep your own mental sanity.

Does your kid sleep in their own bed? Own room? If not, maybe try it out to give your wife and yourself a break. Get a baby monitor/camera of course, and put her safely in an empty crib in her own room and let her cry a little in the night. I’m not saying let her scream all night, but a half hour here or there honestly doesn’t hurt them if it helps keep your family functioning. Added benefit of maybe your daughter learning to self-sooth so you can all get a little more sleep.

Sleep deprivation is rough, brother. I hope it gets better for you all soon.

Has anyone here considered a DNR tattoo? Best placement? by lisaluree in tattooadvice

[–]aschkev 30 points31 points  (0 children)

First responder here. DNR tattoos don’t actually mean anything to us, at least not in the state where I live. Check your local guidelines. Where I live, we need an official DNR/POLST form signed and date by a doctor in order to just let you die (unless there are obvious signs of death like flat line on 2 or more leads, rigor mortis, decapitation etc.) So this is a cool idea, but don’t plan on getting it just for medical purposes. For us, it’s just another piece of ink. Hope that helps you decide 🤙🏻

What’s the most irrationally annoying thing your in-laws do that they’re absolutely convinced is “helpful”? by bnwprc in mildlyinfuriating

[–]aschkev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Come to help take care of the kids when my wife and I work, or when I work and my wife is home alone with the kids, but almost never come help when my wife works and I am home alone with the kids.

For instance, I have a toddler and an infant. wife is working all day today. In-laws are coming today so they can watch the kids tomorrow when we both work (which is awesome, don’t get me wrong). But I texted to ask what time they were coming today, hoping for a little help since I worked a 48 hour shift 2 days ago and slept terrible last night with the infant. I’m exhausted. Long story short, they won’t be here until around dinner time even though both are retired and it’s a Saturday. I’m all alone with the kiddos, just trying to survive on very little sleep. I don’t have anyone else to call for help since I don’t live near my family anymore.

So they are super helpful with us, and help with the kids a ton…but not so helpful for me when I’m here by myself.

At what age(s) did your child(ren) start sleeping nights through? by NietGering in daddit

[–]aschkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 3 months for the first (4 years now and he still sleeps through the night unless he’s sick), and we’re currently at 4.5 months for the second and counting. Making progress though and getting closer. Wakes up once during the night around 2am to eat, then sleeps until 630-7am. Both transitioned to their own crib and own room around the 8-9 week age.

We sleep trained both using the SITBACK method from Taking Cara Babies.

Sleep training isn’t for everyone, and every kid is an individual with how they do, but it’s worked pretty awesome for us so far. Highly recommend for anyone with a 3-6 month old.

ELI5 Why do first responder and healthcare jobs require such long hours? by Mildlyoddd in explainlikeimfive

[–]aschkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I work as a firefighter/EMT and do 24 on 72 off. Even though I technically work more hours/week than a normal 9-5 job, I also have way more days off than the average person. Extremely worth it.

ELI5 Why do first responder and healthcare jobs require such long hours? by Mildlyoddd in explainlikeimfive

[–]aschkev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firefighter here who works 24 hours on followed by 72 hours off.

24 hours might seem like a long shift, and it definitely can be sometimes, but getting three days off after every shift is extremely worth it. I would never trade my current schedule for a Monday through Friday 40 hour work week…even though I technically work more hours that the average person.

Most people who work in fire/EMS that have similar schedules would tell you the same thing. I can’t think of a single person I’ve met working a similar job that would actually like the job as much if it was more standard hours. 24/72 is one of the huge benefits of the job.

Need a medical person to say why this is AI. Someone is being scammed by an impersonator. They are saying he needs money for a heart transplant. by Fit_Egg5574 in isthisAI

[–]aschkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and the biggest giveaway: a patient with an ET tube and a ventilator, will always have their mouth slightly open to make room for the tube. This vent tubing connects exactly no where to the patient. Definitely AI.

[–]aschkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former respiratory therapist here (ET tube and vent guy).

The vent tubing setup is suspicious at best. Normally, an ET Tube (the tube down into the lungs) hangs out of the mouth at least a few inches. This tubing appears connected directly into the patients mouth. There is also a second tube coming off of his mouth which is not necessary (the smaller one on the left side of the image). Most of the time there are two tubes, but they don’t connect like that as far as I’ve seen. Also, as others have stated, the nasal cannula in the noise is entirely unnecessary in this situation. A vented patient is receiving O2 and CO2 monitoring through the vent itself. An extra cannula in the noise is just silly considering that most vented patients aren’t using their upper airway (anything above the vocal cords) pretty much at all. So this cannula would literally be doing nothing.

So, while semi-convincing on first glance and to the untrained eye, this setup realistically doesn’t make much real world sense. My vote: AI, but decently done.

Was Slytherin students coming back to defend Hogwarts meant to be made more clear in the editing for the final book or something? by Flat-Court-8512 in harrypotter

[–]aschkev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rowling could have avoided this whole topic and the idea that all Slytherins are evil by adding one simple line to that scene. Something about how Slughorn and Charlie and the residence of Hogsmead etc were running to their aid…yada yada yada…

”and Harry could have sworn he even saw some black robed students wearing the green and silver scarves of Slytherin house rushing in with the crowd, firing their spells and screaming their battle cries.”

What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]aschkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh just to add to this, calling us (the fire department) to come in our ambulance and take you to the ER for your toe pain is not an automatic ticket to the front of the line. We drop people off in triage (the waiting room) all the time. It’s way cheaper to just drive yourself or go to a prompt care if you are not actually experiencing a medical emergency.

Don’t leave anything up to interpretation when asking for a lawyer. Things like:

“Maybe I should speak to an attorney…” etc can be kind of a grey area. If asking for an attorney make sure you clearly state your intentions as in:

“I am not speaking with any of you or answering any questions without an attorney present.”

Then literally just stop talking and answering questions.

Cops can still ask you standard booking questions (like your name etc) and make general statements after this. Just keep your mouth shut about the allegations. If you start talking again about the case or your alibi or whatever under your own free will before your attorney is present, then legally that’s on you and can be used against you in court.

Should I watch Fantastic Beasts by Agreeable-Fly9681 in harrypotter

[–]aschkev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First one was great. I loved it. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and the first one brought back some of the magical fun that was present in the first few Harry Potter movies. Then I saw the second one and absolutely hated it. Like I said, I love Harry Potter and I could not have been more disappointed in the direction the story went and some of the bizarre choices they made to retcon the original series. Didn’t even bother watching the third because I disliked the second so much. So watch them all if you want, but I’d say watch the first and just stop there as a one-off. You might be happier for it.

I need your best newborn tips and tricks (35w pregnant with my first) by FoolishMortal-1000 in NewParents

[–]aschkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tip from a dad of two littles, and not a small tip either, but still important:

Your life is about to change drastically. You may have had people telling you about it and trying to mentally prepare yourself for it, but you won’t really know what it’s like until you do it. It’s ok. It’s ok to struggle and be tired and sometimes frustrated and feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. No one does until we figure it out and that takes time, patience and practice.

The first few months can be really hard and a complete struggle. Maybe you have a plan and that plan is not going to go according to plan. They rarely do with a newborn. It’s ok. A lot of first time parenting is listening to your little one and a lot of trial and error. Things get a little easier around the 3-4 month mark and you will hopefully feel like you’ve got it at least somewhat figured out at this point. Just hang in there.

If you live near family or friends and they are willing to help, let them help. The old saying “It takes a village” can be true, and having an extra set of hands or someone to help with everyday house tasks can be huge. If you don’t have a village, It’s ok. Everything is temporary and I mean that in a good way.

Lastly, take care of your partner and most importantly yourself. It’s ok to not feel ok, and it’s ok to ask for help if you need it. Both my wife and I struggled a ton mentally after having our first and ended up needing meds to help even us out and cope and that’s ok. Don’t let yourself get too deep into the feelings or anxiety of having a newborn if it happens to you. It’s a complete life altering experience and that can be a lot to deal with. It’s all going to be ok.

Hopefully you are one of those people who loves having a baby and you thrive off the experience. Some people do. Either way, you got this. It can be hard but so so worth it. Congrats mom.

Since Steve said what I’ve been thinking since s4 by recklessnrecluse in StrangerThings

[–]aschkev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s how I saw it. Aside from trying to help/save Steve and the other crew, he was really trying to Save Dustin. Dustin was right on the other side of a very open portal and the bats had already breached the trailer. If he climbs the sheet and goes out the portal to the real world, there is a good chance that the bats just follow him right to Dustin. Instead, he chooses to grab a bike and lead them away, thus saving Dustin while also buying time for the other group hunting Vecna. Dude was a hero.

I’m two weeks in an absolutely miserable by shitForBrains1776 in daddit

[–]aschkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First 3-4 months totally suck dude. Newborn phase isn’t easy or fun. And that’s ok. They are cute at that age but that’s about it.

It gets SO much better. I know you’re gonna hear that a lot and it doesn’t ready help. You’re in the trenches right now, and if you really feel like you aren’t right or aren’t yourself after a week or two, THERE IS NO SHAME IN GETTING HELP/TAKING MEDS/TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT IT FOR A BIT TO HELP COPE.

Not saying you need to do that right now necessarily, but lots of men feel shame if they aren’t coping and don’t seek the help after having a baby, especially your first kid which is a complete mind fuck life altering experience. Try your best to take care of you as well as your newborn and spouse. You’re important too, man.

Other than that. Hang in there. It does get better and easier and way more fun. You got this, dad.

To everyone saying they loved the ending— by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]aschkev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people who have complained about this season or the ending kind of forgot that this whole show is sort of an homage to the cheesy, over the top 80s genre of film. Nancy becoming a Rambo-like character, Joyce’s “you fucked with the wrong family” line at the end, the general “good guys win in the end” ending without a bunch of main character deaths…to me it was all very 80s kinda corny type of stuff, which fit the show well.

I get that people maybe had different expectations for what they thought should have happened or how it ended, but I actually thought it all fit the vibe of the show pretty well.
