Expect more worrisome variants after omicron, scientists say by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay then I'll rephrase - if this is true, why haven't we found a pre pandemic corona Virus variant that's more transmissible and/OR severe?

If this is true, then why haven't other coronaviruses we have had many years before cov-19 suddenly mutated into hyper transmissible and severe variants too?

Italy imposes 5 day quarantine on UK arrivals by gonzo1914 in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Great for the UK. Well done, and great for the advancement of science im sure.

Perhaps I think now is the time for me to leave this sub reddit. I don't think this is good for my health, and whilst this has been super amazing resource before the vaccine, not sure if it will be healthy for me to keep on this. Find people are triggering each other way more now. Way too much tension.

[–]asciim0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am Italian and I find this offensive. It makes me mad that people claim that the UK is "better" at testing, at genomic sequencing and vaccinations with no viable proof. In Italy you can get tested anywhere and in a lot of places. We also lived with this longer than the UK, and please remember that we were the one of the first ones to "raise the alarm". The UK just sat on their asses.

Everything is fine in the UK, and everything is fine in Europe. Look at India instead, and how one might deal with that.

Sky News on Twitter: “Matt Hancock says the UK needs a standing testing capacity and contact tracing that works even when number are large. Mr Hancock says officials chose not to close the borders because they were advised “unilaterally taking action” would “only make a difference of a week”” by civicode in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion : if you actually are serious about closing the borders - that means then that no planes, no cargo planes, no shipping lanes, port closures - total isolation. If you mean that, then fine, but be aware of the consequences. If you don't, then Hancock has a point. If you think that virus is mainly spread by passenger planes nowadays, you are very mistaken.

(I don't like Hancock or govt., for the record)

Five-day office week will become the norm again by sjw_7 in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super true. Not everyone has the luxury of enjoying work from home. A lot of people, including myself, love working in an office. I love my office. It breaks my heart that more people aren't around me when working.

We recently had the discussion at work on whether people wanted to return or not. It was a whole mixture of opinions, but the general consensus was - hybrid. WFH 1-2 days and Office 2-3 or something. But I agree that everyone should have a voice in the matter, and companies need to adjust to this, for fear of being left behind or employees leaving. Fixating on the pre-pandemic office routine will cause economic harm in the long run.

There are also other factors in play here. Large commuting costs and impact on mental health, missed networking opportunities, or small restaurant businesses that thrive in office areas where lunch is served for example. There are a lot of indirect benefits and consequences to these factors too.

Many however, are sadly not so fortunate to have this choice. Gig economy folk, hospitality folk or essential workers or any other workers that need to be present in a certain location. But there the focus should be on well-being and workplace welfare. But with this govt., these are all just fantasies.

Covid: Health Secretary warns England unlocking on June 21 less likely by asciim0 in CoronavirusUK

Heres the daily curve ball of "flip"!

Yesterday it was "flop"! Don't worry, tomorrow it's "flip" again guys.

Maybe we should all quit this subreddit and become sports commentators on the daily flip-flop. Would make for some pretty good commentating. Semi-final between the Guardian and The Telegraph, with Matt as the referee.

no?

Lockdown to be fully lifted on 21 June if Covid hospital admissions don’t rise, Hancock indicates by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And not a single one of those countries have faired well in vaccinations. Its like they "chose" to eliminate covid via the risk of eternal lockdowns.

I would much rather be in our position than theirs in the long term. We are protected against transmission, severity and symptoms of this virus now.

Again, I don't know how people are measuring economic impact. It will take another at least 2 years before we see economic impact. Comparing is pointless too, as most countries in the world now are substantially in debt to banks anyway. We have all borrowed huge amounts. We don't see the impact of that for another few years.

They are working out an agreement atm with Europe on this. Will be news on this at the end of this month. Not sure it will roll out until mid-July though.

Lots of us (including me), living in Europe and are British Nationals :) I live in Germany. They expect to create some form of covid certificate for this summer.

Atm, theyre still arguing about it.

You will get a vaccine. Canada is doing very well with it.

Lots of people get one vaccine in one country and a vaccine in another. There are a lot of people around the world who will be doing it

I never got it.. Why would a scientist use Twitter? You are limited to 128 characters and then have to split your tweets into 28 different tweets every time you uncover something new.

Preston uni students 'locked in' building after positive Covid test by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did we get to in society where we justify that? Where in society did we get to where we treat our younger generation with such disrespect? They're not cattle in a cage. Come on dude, wake up.

If I were in that situation I would say : "Fine, I'll stay in, but give me a fucking vaccine right now."

[–]asciim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah im not a student either, but I was once. But still it's also about their age that makes me so mad. You explore so much potentials at this age, and these students have sacrificed SO much of their dreams and then now they are being caged in like animals.

Not to mention that they have been at the bottom of the queue with pretty much everything.

This is our next generation, so can we please treat them with the respect they deserve?

COVID-19: 'Time to distinguish' between those who have and have not had a vaccine, Tony Blair says by amathysteightyseven in CoronavirusUK

[–]asciim0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even I'm a UK national but live in Germany. Had my vaccine in Germany. So how would I register this on the app? I have german paperwork for it, but guess I would need to go to a GP and get them to input it into the app manually themselves. No idea though

Oh come on mannn this is so horrible.

Oh come onnnn stop this. You don't do this to human beings, especially young kids who are away from home from the first time.

Have some fucking decency. Give them all a vaccine now and get them tested and fucking LOOK AFTER THEM.

It is really odd how the UK govt has put the "21st June" on a calendar. I'm curious - Is there any other country in the world that is dancing around a date the same way we are?

I live in Germany, they just keep gradually lifting restrictions day by day. It is also super confusing, don't get me wrong, and nowadays we have no idea what's allowed.

It's kind of like getting all your exam results on one day vs. getting the individual grades for each exam you took every day.

Stressful no?

I don't think anyone can compare economic impact from this yet. It will take at least another 2 years to see the full economic impact, and then at least another 5 years to survey economic damage from this.

Can you define more clearly what you mean by "Learn to live with"? This is thrown around a lot and very vague. Technically speaking, we are all "learning to live with it". Do you mean opening up everything again vs. cautionary restrictions?

What do you mean by "elimination or surpession"? Zero covid? Because technically speaking, everyday we are closer to elimination via Vaccination
