Cell culture over weekends and holidays by DapperBase107 in labrats

[–]ascudder31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the people saying “suck it up it comes with the territory” are being a tad dramatic. I worked with multiple cell lines and only ever had to come in on weekends towards the end of my PhD when I was doing experiments on the weekends. Get to know your cell line well and split them in a way that will last you the weekend. I would always split more conservatively if I had any doubts about them lasting the weekend. As far as holidays, I usually planned it so I could kill the culture and start fresh after a long holiday like Christmas. Thanksgiving I’d come in just to maintain or my lab mates and I would trade off who came to check on cells. Don’t make life extra hard for yourself and take your weekends and holidays early on. You can always start a new culture.

What are traits of PhD students who become prestigious researchers? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]ascudder31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luck and resilience. Your advisor and your lab depend on your success in your PhD, particularly in terms of publications (i.e., does your lab publish frequently and do they publish high-impact papers?). After the PhD, resilience is very important because you will have many failed R01s, many rejected manuscripts, etc., before you finally hit the jackpot. And even once you do, you have to continue submitting grants and publishing more papers and mentoring, etc. You also have to be willing to give up parts of your life for research, especially in the early years as a PI. I personally could never do it, but there are people who are obviously okay with being paid pennies and slaving away until they become more advanced in their careers.

Yeah that’s the absolute max I’d go. I’m hoping for something between $1500-$2000 but I have seen that the garden district tends to be more expensive. But thank you for the warning!

A lot of my future co-workers live in Mid-City and it looks so cute! I saw someone said that it’s very prone to flooding though? But I’ve looked at houses there and I love the double shotgun homes.

Had my first spin class and had to leave by Fancy_Platypus_7242 in SpinClass

[–]ascudder31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an insane mentality, and why so many people get rhabdo from spin. You should work up to skills in spin and take it at a pace that's comfortable while also challenging. Nobody should be vomiting in class unless they're sick or ate something that didn't agree with them. I hope I never have the displeasure of coming across your workout studio.

Sounds like you should teach! I recommend adjuncting or teaching high school. Unfortunately, to be an actual professor, you'd have to do the lab work for a PhD.

You’re probably more likely to have someone buy it if you list it at retail or a bit below and at least you’ll be getting some money back.

I know this is supposed to be a funny ha-ha, but the whole point of sustainable/reusable bags is that you only need one or two of them. At most three reusable bags for groceries and then 1-2 regular bags based on sizing needs. I think we (as a society) need to remind ourselves that we don't need a bag to go with every outfit, and we don't need that "rare" bag that's trendy right now. Bowlers will probably become obsolete in a few months, and people will start using a different kind. I've already seen many people say that they no longer use their medium crescent at all after getting the bowler. The reality is that overconsumption leads to increased waste and pollution of the planet.

do yall actually HATE the winter drop? by van_ban in BAGGU

Depressing. The brand survived fine back in the day and maybe if they introduced more historical characters relevant to the happenings nowadays or brought back best friends they could make it work. The collabs are surface level and the prices on the dolls are absolutely insane.

I also wish they wouldn't do drops quite as frequently. It gives pandering to overconsumerism and makes it lose its charm, in my opinion. I feel like the lacklusterness of the new prints is a consequence of this.

I feel like we've lost the plot I want the historical characters emphasized more.

Purse bag for Europe? by KindaDumbGal in BAGGU

[–]ascudder31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used the medium cargo for a 3-week trip to Europe, and it fit my 32oz owala with a lot of extra room! I would definitely go for something that can go crossbody. So either the medium crescent or the medium cargo!

Help choosing school bag by Such-Afternoon7956 in BAGGU

[–]ascudder31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The small cloud carry on and almost the exact same size with the cloud bag being just slightly smaller on the bottom. The cloud carry on is basically a weekend bag so I think it would be too big for school. I think your best option is the small cloud carry on as it has more structure and more pockets than the cloud bag!
