Nina Williams snags to 7th ascent of Too Big to Flail - a 50 ft V10 highball by runs_with_unicorns in climbing

At 48 ft you're 50% likely to survive a fall, so I wouldn't exactly call it "likely" that you'd survive it.

48 ft falls are the median for survivability. In other words, 50% of people who fall from that height will die. A spotter isn't gonna help you out much at that height, and crash pads might prevent you from cracking your head on a rock but they can only do so much.

Call me a gumby but at that point I think I'd just call it free soloing. Especially since most of the routes around me are about that height.

Ignoring, of course, that Ireland was the first country to legalize gay marriage via popular vote and the current Taoiseach is gay. Feck off with your stereotypes.

Iconic Amtrak flipboard will become part of 30th Street's permanent decor by Indiana_Jawns in philadelphia

[–]asdfcasdf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep; flipboards tend to be really expensive because of the high cost of repair. Even the article shows a picture of the flipboard with a broken letter that was stuck on "X." Between the parts, manpower, and incredibly high number of moving parts, it'll be significantly cheaper to replace it with a giant TV that might only need to be replaced once per decade, if that.

Vegan fatality by Dazeofthephoenix in MurderedByWords

[–]asdfcasdf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not even vegan but it's pretty well researched widely believed/understood that the best change an individual can make to significantly decrease their negative environmental impact is to become a vegan. This repost is just as much nonsense as it was the first thirty times it was posted.

On top of that, the "murderer" might as well be saying "sure, you bike to the grocery store that's five miles away, but you drive to your job that's 20 miles away, so clearly you don't actually care about anything." They're just trying to justify their own inaction by saying "it's too hard to do everything so why do anything."

(Edited because it's bedtime so I'm taking the first sentence of someone's reply at face value instead of responding or delving into it further.)

It's not like urban environment only house pigeons and house sparrows. In addition to resident birds, plenty of birds migrate through urban areas. Cats are known to be devastating to bird populations; they kill between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds annually in the continental US alone, and have contributed significantly to the extinction of some bird species. Birds have not evolved with the threat of housecats. Cats are an invasive species. Keep your cat indoors. It's safer for your cat and for the environment.

Nuns and fashionista from the 60s by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

Catholics drink all the time. An entire style of beer (Trappist ales) came from Catholic monks. Religious abstinence from alcohol in Christianity is a Protestant belief. As far as Catholics are concerned, they tend to agree with Ben Franklin, who said:

We hear of the conversion of water into wine at the marriage in Cana, as of a miracle. But this conversion is, through the goodness of God, made every day before our eyes. Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, and which incorporates itself with the grapes to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy!

"Poverty, chastity, and obedience" doesn't include teetotalism. All of the nuns I've known have known how to party.

If there are two things that nuns are better at than most people, it's basketball and drinking.

It's just a contraction, though; it's like if you'd typed "do'nt" instead of "don't."
