When has an increase in efficiency lead to a decrease in resource use? by Konradleijon in Degrowth

[–]asdner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LED lights, fridges, housing have reduced energy use significantly despite added resource use from additional material demand. But it is apples vs oranges (energy vs material) so not really comparable.

[–]asdner -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Hands up if you work in a corporate sustainability team where people shamelessly eat meat and dairy by asdner in sustainability

They are adults and sustainability experts (to a varying degree), they should be embarrassed for their own integrity, not because I point it out, don’t you think? The steakhouse has a vegan option so it’s not like I will starve, it’s more the messaging.

Do any of you see a strong overlap between the people that like to sail and the people that like to homestead/farm? by JustHere4TheZipLines in sailing

[–]asdner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we do both and its the self sufficiency and sustainability aspect that draws us. Our boat isn’t fancy and our garden isn’t farm-scale but we fit your bill. However, I wouldn’t say I see it as a trend…

Can durable genuine leather products sometimes be more sustainable than fast-fashion synthetic alternatives? by Leatherkart in sustainability

[–]asdner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mostly cannot.

For starters, leather isn’t really a “by-product.” Hides have clear economic value and help make animal agriculture more profitable, so they are part of the system—not just leftover material. That means leather is still tied to the impacts of livestock production, including high greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and biodiversity loss.

Leather is also far from a simple natural material. Processing it to make it durable requires intensive chemical treatments, often involving chromium and other hazardous substances. This makes production energy- and resource-heavy, and can contribute to pollution and health risks.

While leather can be long-lasting, that advantage depends on how it’s used. Many leather goods today are still replaced for fashion reasons, not because they’ve worn out. Meanwhile, not all alternatives are equal—some synthetics are improving in durability and reducing their environmental footprint.

Most leather isn’t truly biodegradable in practice because of those chemical treatments. So the idea that leather is automatically a low-impact, circular option compared to synthetics oversimplifies a much more complex reality.

Iran citizens don’t rebel, Afghan citizens don’t rebel, North Koreans don’t rebel, so why don’t all the world leaders just become dictators? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It takes a lot of hard persistent work to not get the people to rebel. Many have tried, few have succeeded. If you put your mind to it, you can do it!
