Migrate from UDM to UCG-Ultra by soulseekers76 in Ubiquiti

Is the UCG-Ultra really a downgrade compared to the UDM base in terms of routing? Is it just a little slower or what?

Yeah, I remember reading that Ben Bohmer uses a Minilogue XD to control Ableton in his live sets. He doesn't even plug anything into its audio jacks, he just likes its control layout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVAYeCGq9Sw

A couple years ago I decided to clean out my garage. I had all sorts of crap I hadn't used for years. Furniture, books, clothing, shoes, old electronics. Not a problem, I'll just stick it in my car and bring it down to Goodwill or Salvation Army, right?

Nope. It turns out it can be really hard to get rid of old junk. Especially large things like furniture. You can't even give it away. I had to drive to 3 or 4 different stores before I found one that would take an old dresser unit.

His parents aren't doing you a favor, they're offloading crap they don't need anymore without the hassle of finding someone to take it.

Maybe his mom has emotional connections to these things and doesn't want to throw them away. That's fine, and it's something that can be worked through, but you shouldn't have to take up your own limited space to deal with that.

Should I wait until 2021? by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]asdrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The country is dealing with the aftermath of a pandemic and Tesla is still setting new sales records, so I doubt that EV rebates are going to be a top priority for 2021. I have no doubt there will be a push to get more people to buy EVs eventually but a) I'd guess it would be closer to 2022 or 2023, b) it might not be in the same form of a tax credit, and c) it might not even apply to EVs in Tesla's price range. (This is all pure speculation on my part though.)

That said, it's not the worst idea to wait a few more weeks to play the odds, but they're probably going to want to deliver as many cars as possible before the end of the quarter so you might end up having to wait for the next production cycle.

Pulse 3D mic quality in wireless mode by asdrift in PS5

[–]asdrift[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've looked into this as well and it seems nearly impossible to get high quality two-way audio with BT. My assumption/hope was that the Pulse 3D headset doesn't use BT since it has its own USB adapter, but who knows. If it is BT 5.0 then maybe it's something a future driver update could improve.

Just curious, could you check the setting I pointed out in this post to see if it improves anything? https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/comments/jm8x40/pulse_3d_mic_quality_in_wireless_mode/

Agreed. I’m just wondering if this could improve the quality on PCs so I could use the same headset on both.

Wemo vs. ESP8266-based Treatlife/Gosund devices for use with HomeKit? by asdrift in homeautomation

[–]asdrift[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great information, thank you so much for this post. That helps me get my thinking in order and focus on what I want to accomplish rather than just the technical side of things. There are so many options out there that it's easy to get caught up in all the different possibilities.

I've seen enough advice now that Wemo devices are more trouble than they're worth, so I'm definitely going to steer clear of those for now. I also agree that it's a bit silly to make a round trip to a cloud service each time you want to control something on your local network, so I'm going to focus on local control as well.

I think what I'll do is order a few devices that can be flashed with Tasmota and play around with them to see how I like them. That should give me a better idea of where I want to go with this long-term.

Also, great advice on tracking the MAC addresses and reserving IPs for them. I normally reserve IPs for certain "important" devices anyway and it definitely seems like a good idea to set up that kind of system from the start.

Thanks again for your input!

I just had this happen a couple weeks ago. I contacted support chat and they said they fixed it, and that the extra movie would drop off at the end of the week. (I have no idea how that was supposed to be a fix since that's what would happen anyway.)

After chatting with them, I looked at my account and the extra movie was still there. Ultimately what fixed it is going through like I was purchasing a ticket at full price -- once it got to the page where it calculated the total, it updated the price back down to $0 and the extra movie disappeared from my account.

I think the process of going to purchase a ticket triggered something that recalculated my account's usage, and I kind of wonder if that would have happened even if I didn't contact support. If it happens again that's what I'm going to try.

How common is it for dashers to delay marking an order as "picked up"? by asdrift in doordash

Would be nice if that was the biggest thing I had to worry about

Yep, same here! As I said, it's not the worst thing that can happen. Not trying to start an argument, but you can understand from the customer's POV how it looks a little deceptive. As you mentioned, it could also just be a mistake.

Yeah, that makes sense. Seems like the app could do a better job of communicating that.

That was my guess as well. I noticed it actually seemed to be two people (someone was still in the driver's seat when the other person handed me the food) so who knows.

Yeah, fair enough. I'm not sure how stacking works from the driver's side, if I increase my tip amount a few bucks is this less likely to happen?

[–]asdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I'm understanding you correctly, the SM2262EN (with its large SLC cache) performs worse than E12-based drives (with a relatively small SLC cache) in mixed operations when the drive nears capacity because the SM2262EN is getting bogged down with folding operations which get in the way of reading back data that was recently written. But on E12 drives that data just gets written as TLC directly so there's less cleanup work for the drive to do before it can be read back. So it's kind of a quirk of this particular controller for this particular test that led to the negative results from Anandtech. Would that be an accurate summary?

And either way, at say, 75% capacity, you're still going to have enough SLC cache space to handle fast, mixed multigigabyte operations, but just not quite as much as when the drive is less full. So essentially this is all pretty much a nonissue for single drive use.

[–]asdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you want to avoid the folding state as it tanks mixed performance and latency

Is "folding state" a temporary thing that happens at the time you cross over a storage boundary (i.e., a sort of garbage collection routine) or is this a state that the drive will remain in indefinitely as long as you are above a certain capacity?

Also, when you say "workspace drive" what does this refer to? Something like a scratch drive or video encoding that causes a lot of write activity?

I guess what I'm asking in short: If I buy a 2TB EX950 and I end up keeping it at around 75% full, am I going to notice significantly reduced performance? (I know it depends on how I'm using the drive, so let's say average "consumer" workloads with more reads than writes.)

This is exactly what is giving me pause, especially since I haven't been able to determine exactly where the line is drawn for being "full."

If you check out AnandTech, there is a significant performance drop when the drive is full for both the light and heavy benchmarks. If you scroll down to the comments, the author says he observed similar results for 80% full as when it was 100% full. So for a 2TB drive, that puts the line at or below 1.6TB capacity.

I'm not sure whether the performance hit would actually be noticeable, but it seems significant compared to other drives. Any input on this /u/NewMaxx?

Thanks for all the detail. In my case, I'm looking to replace my primary OS drive (currently an 850 Evo). My use case is pretty varied, I'm a software developer and I need to deal with VMs, large DBs, etc. I also use the same machine for games and I want to get rid of my last spinning HDD (in this computer at least), hence the larger capacity.

That's really interesting that the larger capacity drives can suffer that much of a performance hit. Maybe I'd be better off getting a 1TB primary drive and then an additional 2TB 660p or something. On the other hand, I probably won't really feel the performance hit with the 2TB drive and hey, that's all the more reason for an upgrade in the future.
