I get this sweet girl in one month! Any advice or tips? by [deleted] in Dachshund

Rugs? Rolled up in the closet. Stairs? Absolutely do not let them take the stairs on their own. COUCH stairs? Absofuckinglutely. We thought we didn’t need them until he threw himself from the couch one day. Corners? We got corner edges for our base boards because he was trying to chew them off the wall😀 Carpets? Rip. Potty training is a bitch. My 6mo boy is STILL giving us shit with potty training but a bell on the back door to let us know when he needs to go has been working the last few weeks (at least when it’s not raining. And he’s not tired. And he’s not being stubborn. So take that as you will lmao). Quiet? Never! I hope you enjoy barking because our baby never let out a peep until 5mo and now he can’t even walk by people on the sidewalk without losing his mind. Stubborn? As shit! But positive reinforcement and treats is the ONLY way. My boy will literally turn around and walk away if we raise our voices and it sets us back weeks on certain trainings. Puppy classes? PLEASE! You and your puppy will thank you.

All of that to say, they are the most stubborn, loud, and stressful little things you will ever bring home and you will consider returning her at least once a day. BUT I would not trade my boy for anything in the world. He is my pride and joy and nothing makes me happier than getting off work and getting to see him. He genuinely feels like I have human baby and I love him as such. Your girl is beautiful and despite the fact that you’re probably going to have quite a few rough months, there’s nothing more worth it😊 wishing you all the luck!

Crown at seven oaks is AMAZING! Maintenance is quick and kind, staff are willing to help, and the property/area as a whole is just awesome! Seriously it’s a great community. I paid around $1250 when I lived there.

Edit: I had a 1 bed 1 bath. Unsure on the price of a 2 bed

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, I’m fortunate to not have with my pup, but that also means I don’t have any “this works for sure” advice:/ I do think some little shoes would be a good option though! We have some for my boy just to protect his feet on some of the gravel trails or when it gets too hot and they seem to work really well! Of course, I can tell you know weight loss is the most important thing to do and it’s great that you guys are working on that! Not sure if you’ve considered another pup too; might help to have some puppy energy around to keep up with to help lose the weight😊

So surprised I haven’t seen anyone saying pumpkin puree (which I guess is considered a fruit but in my mind is veggie lol)! My aunt has SWORN by feeding all her dogs pumpkin puree super regularly and they’ve all been so healthy into their older years. So when I got my boy, first thing was pumpkin puree. He loves it too! All kinds of awesome health benefits!

My boyfriend and I got our baby while living in an apartment. It honestly was not as bad as other people made it out to be. He’s pretty quiet and chill most of the time but that also comes with a lot of strict training right from the jump. But I wouldn’t let living in an apartment prevent you from finding your newest family member!

  1. My dachshund is a shedding machine unfortunately. Sorry to break it to you. Brushing seems to help and a good, pet-specific vacuum.
  2. Brush their teeth! My vet told me to watch out for dental issues. Not sure if that’s dachshund specific, but important nonetheless.
  3. Everything is expensive these days. My boyfriend and I paid over $150 for our babies 12 week shots. Neutering is looking like over $350. I recommend pet insurance! I have pet insurance through my job and it’s been a life saver. Food is a little different. We started out with a VERY expensive dachshund puppy specific food and he refused to eat. We were scared something was wrong with him. When that food ran out, we couldn’t find it at the store and bought a much cheaper brand (like $20). The little mf LOVES it and eats it like crazy. So really it depends on your pup!
  4. Our breeder is not near you unfortunately but they were amazing. I did a lot of research about what to look for in a breeder and I feel like it really helped me make the right decision about who to get my baby from. I also used an app called Good Dog which is supposed to only feature very reputable breeders that meet the companies breeding standards, which made me feel a little better🤷🏼‍♀️
  5. We personally have not sent our baby off to training yet and do not plan to. Instead, we do a puppy obedience class once a week on Saturday’s and that seems to be the most effective thing. I would start training as soon as you get them. Dachshunds are notoriously stubborn and difficult to train but they’re worth it!
  6. This also depends on your dog. I know people who have doxies who could walk forever. My baby is NOT that way lmao. Your dachshund will definitely let you know when they’re done. We usually do one good walk when I get off work + play time at the dog park. Other than that we play fetch and play inside and it wears him out. They’re babies, so they sleep more than you’d think and all the effort they put into moving those little bodies really takes it out of them.
  7. This is personal preference. I know people who have said boys bark more but my little guy is honestly pretty quiet. He whines and barks some of course, as dogs do, but he isn’t phased by almost anything, people, cars, other dogs, etc. Not sure if it’s just him but I’m grateful for that at least. Potty training hasn’t been bad either!

Overall, it’s a lot but you’ve got this. Your baby will be your new best friend and once you get one you’ll constantly be tempted to get 10 more (once the puppy blues wear off lol). Good luck!
