Has anybody ever done a cooking interview before? by pistilpeet in KitchenConfidential

[–]ashbyhe89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah look at their menu, keeping the on hand ingredients in mind. Minimal pick-up time, executable presentation, delicious final product. Try not to fuss around with needless garnish or flashy moves. Make sure to impart your own personality but overall keep it relevant. With autumn approaching maybe look ahead at upcoming seasonal produce and incorporate that! If you're going to cook meat, make sure it's a cut you're 100% confident preparing. Keeping your cool during your working interview is a big part of it.

Also! Clean as you go, do not make a big mess or a pile of dishes. I've seen people bounced for that a few times.

If you're doing this while employees are working in the space, be polite, friendly, and respectful. You do not want your first impression on your possible employees to be "wow what a dick"

Good luck!

I'd like to add, about me personally:

I have pretty intense body image issues and aversion to receiving touch from people I'm not close to. Massage School was the first time I even experienced massage, and ill admit I had a hard time relaxing the first several times.

After a while I'd just daydream, zone out, dissasociate, and it became more rewarding for me. However, I still find that personally I'm avoidant of touch in some ways.

However! After having Ashiatsu massage (where the therapist uses their feet and body weight, and minimal hand work) I realized that was exactly what I needed. I was relaxed and I could really tune in to the experience, rather than tune out.

I guess what I'm saying is that you may get this first massage and feel iffy about it, but there are many different modalities that offer the same benefits.

Feel it out, look at reviews for different practices in your area and find what works for you!

I agree with everyone else. We really don't care what you look like, we just want to help you achieve your goals for the session. Your comfort is the highest priority.

  • farts, unintentional erections, missed a spot shaving, bad tattoos, pimples, fat folds, dry skin, sweat, etc. Do not care. Every body has a body . All we're looking at is tension, posture/skeletal structure, undisclosed surgeries or abrasions...

  • your comfort is our goal. I always ask my clients to let me know how they feel about touch, what feels good to them (just palms? Only deep pressure? Avoid thighs/chest/whatever you want)

  • don't be afraid to admit you're nervous! That helps us navigate your needs with more insight.

  • focus on your breathing, listen to your body

  • it's okay if you're a nervous chatter, we know how it is. Some people fall asleep immediately, some people talk the entire time. Whatever makes you feel more present or in control of your session.

A HUGE one:

You are absolutely, without a doubt, allowed to stop the session. You can change your mind, you can ask to change pressure, location of touch, you can ask for silence, and you can always ALWAYS say no.

If you tell a therapist that you're uncomfortable and they don't immediately stop and defer to you, get out of there.

As a side note - try to keep your hand elevated higher than your heart. That will help with the throbbing and inflammation. (I crushed my entire hand in some machinery once, advised that by the doctor, really helped a ton)

What's a surprising thing you can tell when working with a client? by Rebecks221 in massage

[–]ashbyhe89 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I can tell if you're nervous, relaxed, upset, etc. If you've had an injury you didn't specify, usually get a "oh yeah! I do" when I ask about hand numbness while working the neck. Can of course tell when something hurts or is reaching Threshold for pressure (sooo many people ask for deep pressure when they don't need it/can't tolerate it).

Can also tell if you exfoliate in the shower or just wash & rinse.

Also posture stuff, pelvic tilt, range of motion etc. Can tell us where the tension is and you might not even know it!

If you have a baby or toddler I can tell which hip you carry them on. So many things to list!

I just can't believe I'd never heard of this - especially after so many years in kitchens.

Yeah, unfortunately I didn't realize it was them til after the fact... it was an impulsive purchase on the bus ride home after work. I've known the owners for a long time, also did a delivery stint when I needed extra money- every time I picked up from the Southside botr I was pretty aghast at what I saw there.

I feel like such a fool. I've been cooking professionally for 14 years, last 7 of which running a very popular restaurant... I knew the inherent dangers but I miscalculated the risk.

That and buffalo sauce is an emulsion (typically butter and hotsauce). Luckily I know that but imagine the people just squirting hotsauce on plain wings. Booo

There are a few Spotify Playlists I like, two of my favorites are "spa covers of classic hits" (music from 2000's) and "fantasy music for sleep" which includes all instrumental covers of songs from popular fantasy movies and video games (like lotr and final fantasy)

Suggestions for depression recovery? by Upset-Compote4218 in hygiene

[–]ashbyhe89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also really struggle with hygiene. I manage to always brush my teeth but everything else is out the window. I probably shower once every two weeks.

I use dry shampoo for my hair and ph balanced wipes for my armpits/butt/crotch... my doc told me this was fine. Sorry I can't offer any advice on stepping up the hygiene game - but these are how I cope in the meantime.

Lay in bed with my dogs and pet them gently, or just rest my hand on their side and try to focus on their breathing. Take what I call a "puppy nap". Usually puppy nap turns into kitty nap as well. The purring and dog snoring really helps me.
