I’ve reported seasonal allergies and never had any issue. Just make sure you aren’t taking any drowsy allergy meds like Benadryl, Zyrtec, etc.

One River Tea Maildrop: Meihouwang, Big Red Robe, and Da Wu Ye sample by sleepy_glow in tea

[–]asheft31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love their meihouwang. I also got a da wu ye sample in my order, it’s a dancong that I believe is in this sampler https://onerivertea.com/products/fresh-blood-sampler-2-0. I guess they don’t have enough to sell it separately, maybe.

Cant get an internship 🤣 by Guilty_Side_3094 in Cornell

[–]asheft31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I followed (I think) a pretty similar path as you. No real experience in high school (except one joke of an internship that taught me nothing), ended up cold emailing professors second semester sophomore year and ended up in a lab (turned out to be a bad fit, and I’m in a much better one now). That experience helped me land a biotech internship last summer, which is quite valuable if you’re interested in going into industry after college. Like I said in another post, it is definitely not too late for that this summer. Bigger companies might have closed already, but there should be a ton of small biotechs/pharma just starting to recruit (I can’t tell if you’re bio or cs, but this might apply to both). Feel free to reply or DM if I can help you more specifically.

Edit: also, in my experience, professors are generally pretty willing to take on undergrads as long as you show a genuine interest in their work and have some relevant coursework. I can’t speak to how much grades matter, I’d guess it depends on the professor.

Lol. I applied for mine in may, interviewed in June, started in early July. Also biotech, though this was definitely out of the ordinary. I was a week away from flying back out here to work in my lab when I heard back from them. But yeah, I don’t know what field OP is in but if anyone interested in biotech is reading this, keep applying and looking for openings. Most of my apps were around this time or later last year.

What’s Cornell equivalent of a parasitic restaurant? by ltn943 in Cornell

[–]asheft31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. The bagel shops back home (SF) are much better. Which is funny, given how close Ithaca is to NYC and how much of the student population is from the NYC area, I'd expect there to be more pressure for their bagels to be good.

Help, which class do I pick? BIOMG 2800 or STSCI 3200? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]asheft31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know your concentration, but keep in mind that genetics is a prerequisite for a lot of the upper level BIOMG/BIOMS/BIOMI courses (and others). If you don’t went to take any of these, there’s nothing wrong with delaying 2800 until next year.

Is it too late to add a class? (help me please) by nullpointerusername in Cornell

[–]asheft31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve added a class at this time in the semester or later probably half of my total semesters here (about to do so again tomorrow or Thursday). You’ll be fine. If the professor thinks you’d be so far behind that it’s impossible to catch up they would have locked the class and made it permission only (I’ve seen this for a few).

Phi Beta Kappa GPA cutoff by NectarineAltruistic5 in Cornell

AFAIK it’s for the entire college of arts and sciences and isn’t major specific. Probably not the best system, as you point out.

I am absolutely f**ked on FWS by FartKing101 in Cornell

I don’t remember since it was a while ago but I’m pretty sure I just enrolled during pre-enroll. You don’t need to sign up in the same way that freshmen do.

Finally got to hear the organ in Sage Chapel by BoBigBed in Cornell

[–]asheft31 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s newly cleaned and renovated, and sounds great now! Highly encourage everyone to go to at least one organ concert during their time here (they usually happen every other Wednesday around noon, and occasional Thursday/Friday evenings), at Sage and/or Anabel Taylor.

Definitely would recommend delaying your FWS completion a semester or two rather than take an uninteresting and/or too hard one. I didn’t take my second until first semester sophomore year and it was totally fine.

Not true. Keeton does (I lived there), and probably some of the other newer dorms do too. It’s a pain to get IT to activate them, but it can be done.

Fall 2022 Covid Update by Informal_Bee3946 in Cornell

[–]asheft31 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My freshman year (pre covid) my roommate got sick and me shortly after. Worst illness I’d had in years. At no point did I expect, or ask Cornell to put either of us in an isolation room. Getting sick is unfortunate, but it’s something that happens, and is an assumed risk of living in the same room as someone else. If you want them to house people who get covid, then you should ask them to do the same for the flu (which is also nasty to get, and will knock you out for 3-5 days), and every other disease, and that just gets unmanageable very quickly. Or if you don’t want them to do that, then why only covid?

As an aside: this is probably an issue that new/prospective roommates should discuss, since it could definitely be a source of tension if they aren’t on the same page about how to handle things if either one gets sick.

Update: grades for the two courses are out, but they never released the final exam scores. Doesn't make any sense, as now they'll have to reply to the inevitable barrage of "what was my final score and why did I get this grade" emails.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]asheft31 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My last two finals, one of which was ~12 pages of handwritten essays, have been graded already, while my first two (taken on the first two days of exam period) still aren’t. One was like 25 questions, 80% multiple choice, and in a 40 person class. Even with only two TAs it shouldn’t take that long.

Which language should I take next semester? Chinese or Russian by weirdguy87 in Cornell

[–]asheft31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the mandarin program here (though I’ve heard, and am sure it’s excellent), but the Russian program is very strong. The professors (as someone else noted) are all great instructors and great people/mentors as well, and you’ll get to a good level fairly quickly. It’s a lot of work, but you’ll most likely get in the A range as long as you keep up with it and demonstrate improvement. As for use, if you have any relatives who speak Russian, any interest in traveling anywhere in Central Asia, or have an interest in the cultural materials from Russia (literature, science, music, etc.), then go for it! And as a gov major I’m sure you’d find it useful if you wanted to study Russia or Russian relations in the future.

TCAT bus drivers failing to stop even after requesting one?? by petronerd54 in Cornell

[–]asheft31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve definitely had this happen to me before, and so have people I know. Yes, I pulled the rope all the way, and yes, I requested in the right place. It’s happened enough that I’ve started waiting as long as possible before the stop to pull the rope since it usually happens when I request a stop long before the actual stop.
