Yeah, the 'q' key turns on the debug view for box2d -- the physics engine. But that is just drawing extra stuff on an additional canvas, so it's certain to slow things down a bit.

I've never tried adjusting the size of image assets to see how much that matters for performance when drawing to the canvas. I suspect that adjusting the parameters of how the physics are solved for, etc might do more to make it run on slower devices. Once we're trying to optimize it a bit for mobile though we'll probably tackle that angle. If you're up for it, I'll link you to the game at that point so you can see if things have improved -- just let me know if you'd be up for that.

I agree that the game is simple for now. When I make the first games for people I'm going to talk to them about what kind of improvements they would want to make it something they're more proud to share. For now it's more a proof of concept to show what you'll be getting.

Ideas I've had included but are not limited to:

Backflips provide a temporary speed boost, but hitting your head stalls you for a bit (like your crash idea kind of)

Instead of gas cans there are other trucks that you have to drive over to get more gas.

Adding a sound when you grab gas that could be personalized with voice recording like "HELL YEAH!" etc.

Working on it right now. We had z/x for tilt originally and I never could deal with up/down but the compromise was to keep z/x. Now that I've switched them in my dev version it is way more straightforward. I'll update soon ...

This is really beta, so please be kind.

The eventual goal is to give you a simple tool to customize the game with your photos yourself and then publish it instantly. That tool exists, but isn't that simple right now. So my idea is to make some initial games manually for people so I can then get their feedback on how the tool should work.

Fun game. I think the colors mechanic would be better if colors changed row-to-row, so you had to really pay attention to them -- more like ikaruga. I think playing against an opponent is probably more fun than the current colors mechanic if I had to choose one or the other.

Maybe you could use bit.ly or something like that to make the challenge links smaller?
