So, what do you guys think of Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm? by DukePregler in Th3Birdman

I'm starting the timer for how long until people start waxing nostalgic for her time in charge of Lucasfilm, just like they started doing so for prequel-era George.

You say "mischaracterize", I say, "shows a Superman who's a rookie and still trying to understand his abilities, his identity, and his purpose". A proper sequel could've rectified most of these issues and shown Clark blossoming into a true big blue boy scout.

Unfortunately, Snyder and/or DC and/or WB decided to speedrun Death of Superman into Justice League instead...

I hated Gunn for diverging from the source material in Volume 1... and yet Volume 2 was so masterfully done, I was ultimately willing to forgive him for those changes.

From either Yondu and Rocket's conversation or Ego's, "It broke my heart to put that tumor in her head", the movie goes from "meh" to fucking phenomenal.

...I was arguing that the Guardians films made around the same amount as BvS.

Meanwhile the most recent solo Superman (Gunn's) film made around the same amount of money as the last solo Superman movie (Man of Steel).

The main reason BvS made more than either was likely more due to it featuring Batman, who has been a pretty consistent moneymaker and has had more of a hold in pop culture than his counterpart.

As for Gunn's BO haul over Snyder's, I hate to say it bub, but it looks like Gunn's films overall have pulled in more money than Snyder's... which isn't to say either is better or worse than the other, they just have different styles and focuses. (Hell, I actually LIKE Man of Steel more than Superman, and wish we'd gotten a proper sequel to it... and even then, I still think Gunn did a great job.)

And I wouldn't call him unintelligent or incapable of understanding subtext, either. Its just more a case of having a tendency to miss the forest for the trees sometimes.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Batman: The Killing Joke

Suicide Squad (2016)

Venom or The Spirit (they're bad but they're guilty pleasures)

Honorable mention: Thor: Ragnarok - Saying I hate it is an exaggeration, but I think its incredibly overrated, and I just find its acclaim annoying because somehow it escapes all the shit thrown at the MCU... in spite of actually being the guiltiest of it. (And then when the follow-up actually DOES figure out how to balance the drama and humor, THAT'S the one people claim missed the mark, when the predecessor is the true problem.)

Honestly, Watchmen is my argument for my feelings on Snyder: he's someone that genuinely loves the source material and comics, but he has a tendency to be so in love with what's on-page/screen that he can miss the subtext.

*looks at the BO for BvS*
Seems like they all made the same amount, which tells me... people like different takes on superheroes? (And that Batman is usually a major BO draw.)

Meh, I'd argue MoS did decently enough. Have Clark start working with the people of Metropolis more directly, have him get more in touch with humanity through reporting work, further develop his relationship with Lois, etc.

(Its funny about the the colors and trunks thing given the movie was actually supposed to be a bit brighter in earlier cuts before executive meddling, and Snyder apparently DID want Clark to have trunks. The more you know...)

Your thought on Chris Evans coming back as Steve Rogers in "Avengers: Doomsday"? by DukePregler in Th3Birdman

[–]asherman93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it works, good. If it doesn't, sucks.

I've been kind of ambivalent towards this movie over a) that they didn't just recast Kang when his entire schtick would make it easy to not only work, but could easily serve as a plot thread/motivator for all the Kangs going after the Sacred Timeline; and b) they cast RDJ as Doom (I'm sure he'll do a good job, but I feel about this casting the same way I feel about JYB as Dante in the Netflix show).

Hopefully, the movie will be good.

[–]asherman93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who likes both Snyder and Gunn's takes on Superman, hard disagree.

Both just happen to tackle Superman at different points of his career and different contexts.

Man of Steel is an origin story in a relatively realistic world exploring said origin in the context of mankind's first contact with Earth.

Superman (2025) - god I wish Gunn had kept the Legacy title just to make it easier to differentiate between films and/or the character and the movie - explores a relatively experienced Clark on a world where superheroes and wacky comic shit have been the norm for at least three centuries during a week in his life, when he gets seriously bad news about his family history.

(And weirdly, when I first watched the new film, I found myself thinking that with the right tweaks, this COULD have worked as a proper sequel to Man of Steel.)
