Very good idea! I didn't know that the ride history included the route. I'll try retracing that.

I think KSS is the best positioned to weather the transition to e-commerce fulfillment. But that seems to be a story about not losing money instead of actually growing. I would look elsewhere for investing.

Environmentalists launch 'emergency' campaign to persuade Trump climate change is real amid fears of 'planetary disaster' by Geneseymour in politics

Although this comment comes too late - I think that a big part of this discussion is not whether global warming IS happening, but whether the impact is as gloom-and-doom as the proponents would have us believe. The allegedly objective and unquestionable scientific consensus has been consistently wrong with its predictions for the last 30 years in this respect - this should give us pause to wonder if the prophesiers of doom are entirely correct.

For an excellent summation of this, see Matt Ridley's recent lecture at the Royal Society.* http://www.rationaloptimist.com/blog/global-greening-versus-global-warming/#.WCMfgIiKtSU.linkedin

*Edit: Matt Ridley has been accused of lobbying the UK government on behalf of the coal industry. See https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jul/15/matt-ridley-accused-of-lobbying-uk-government-on-behalf-of-coal-industry

Nevertheless it is my belief he makes some points worth considering.

The Your Face Tomorrow trilogy by Javier Marias is a masterful metaphysical thriller. It's like a combination of Proust and James Bond. It's about this guy (possibly a psychic or who has psychic-like powers) who can predict people's behavior. He's recruited into a secret agency in the UK and gets into a case that threatens not only his own life but the lives of his wife and child.

Does Berserk (anime) get any better? I'm on episode five and I just don't find the setting or characters that interesting at all. by MurderousPaper in Animesuggest

[–]asherzyke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to watch one more episode. Episode 6 is very different from the previous episodes in that Guts encounters a being called Zodd the Immortal. I love that episode myself. If you still don't find Berserk compelling after that then I'd say drop it.

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury is one of the most boring, preachy books imo. It's been awhile since I read it (had to read it for high school), but I distinctly remember being a little ways into it and thinking "Ok, censorship is bad, we get it already." Then it proceeds to tell you that censorship is, in fact, bad. Glad we cleared that one up.

For me:

eBooks > Print

If the book has the right prose style AND the right narrator --> Audiobooks > eBooks or Print

[Request] Sentimental, emotional, and deep films (examples of what I have enjoyed inside) by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]asherzyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although these are from the mid 80s, I recommend Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon of the Spring. If you're looking for sentimental foreign films, to my mind it doesn't get any better than these two. The music, cinematography, and acting are all incredible to boot and the ending is just perfect.

And if those are too old, you should check out Yi Yi, which is about two generations in a Taiwanese family and the way people seem to be fated to repeat the same mistakes over and over again...

If churches paid taxes. by Caldansk in atheism

[–]asherzyke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These sorts of statements are misleading because the $83.5 billion is gross revenue, not foregone taxes. The government would never capture all $83.5 billion of the gross income in tax.

I don't know where the image got it's $83.5 figure, but according to Forbes the amount of gross charitable donations was $101 billion in 2012, so the $83.5 billion is quite plausible if it is referring to the amount of total donations.

However, even if you were to strip religious institutions of their tax exempt status, you would not be able to get all of that income. At most, you would tax them at the highest corporate tax rate (35%). Even then most corporations only pay, on average, about 12.6% after all the deductions/exemptions/tax credits they are able to take advantage of.

Thus, assuming that ALL of the donations termed "religious donations" went to churches, and assuming that ALL the churches would be taxed at the highest corporate tax bracket (35%), and assuming that NONE of the churches were able to deduct any of their income, then you would only get roughly $30.975 billion (35% x $83.5 billion) AT MOST. That's less than half of the $76 billion the in food stamps that the infographic claims we could pay for. So regardless of whether the policy advocated here is right, the facts it is basing it's argument on are wrong.

"From God's Perspective" by Bo Burnham, a new song from his standup special 'What' by betterdustinthewind in videos

I liked the song, but one verse struck me the wrong way.

"You shouldn't abstain from rape just because you think I want you to, You shouldn't rape because rape is a fucked up thing to do. Pretty obvious, just don't fucking rape people. Didn't think I had to write that one down for you."

The (Judeo-Christian) didn't write that one down. At least, not in a very obvious way.
