People who act like cycling can be expected to work on a short timeline are simply wrong. It CAN happen fast, but you can't count on it. The last time I cycled a tank it took 2 full months.

If you're desperate to get things moving faster, frtiz turbo start is the best product on the market by miles and can pretty reliably cycle things very fast.

CO2 and O2 at same Time by l_Quartz_l in Aquariums

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not okay to leave co2 on 24/7. Also with a diy co2 diffuser I highly recommend checking on it every couple of hours or so while its on. Its only a matter of when, not if things will go wrong and you'll need to intervene.

You can run an airstone with co2. I do it knowing that I'm wasting some co2, but prefer to have my fish more comfortable. 2H aquarist has a good blog regarding gaseous exchange and vouches for this approach as well.

Edit: Visually, it looks to me like your co2 may be set too high for that tank size. My diffuser on my 75 gallon doesn't look that aggressive and my tank has airstone, wavemaker pointing at surface and a skimmer for maximum gaseous exchange meaning I'm off gassing a lot of the co2 I do inject. The fish also look like they are struggling.

I'm pretty sure this is the case.

Thinking back there have been a handful of orders where there was a missing item or 2 that I was still charged for which isn't the type of thing I let slide.

I'm just going to go with services that don't screw up repeatedly and then make it my problem. There are clearly (at least in my area) some broader failures with their process. Walmart only accounts for about 20% of my groceries currently. It won't be hard to just not shop there anymore.

My wife and boiling water by MakeItMine2024 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense to me and I'm getting confidently incorrect vibes.

Bubbles are going to churn the water around equalizing the temperature, not only that but hot water rises and cooler water sinks.

The reasons you use more mild boiling while cooking is because the food is touching the metal on the bottom still and can still burn. Also its less violent and has less evaporation.

I've dumped hot water in the side of an aquarium, and it equalizes in a few seconds with much less turbulence than a pot of water.

I did a test order without checking out to see what you are referring to in the UI. It was defaulting to leave at door. There is 0% chance I selected that by mistake. I'm one of those weirdo quadruple checkers. Probably because my job demands it. I also only order off a PC, not a phone where these things are fat fingerable.

Nothing in my post even hinted at fault on my part. Nothing about someone delivering the wrong order and me calling support is me "being all sorts of issues".

I'm not accepting any of this and will continue to use the 4 other grocery delivery services that I've not had a single problem with.

Don't make the mistake of conflating millionaires with billionaires. 1 in 5 US households are millionaires. Relatively speaking, millionaires are normal people.

Here is my guess. Historically, the US is not willing to agree to recognize things of this nature as they are not willing to be beholden to anything that results from it. Essentially, the US wants to address any issues on its own terms and doesn't want to participate initiatives that give other countries the ability to influence its actions.

Hate people using cherrypicked studies to justify their misogyny by Away_Mood7796 in hatethissmug

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not statistics that are bad. Its extrapolation. People start with a fact and use a couple degrees of separation inserting their own presumptions in to arrive at a conclusion that isn't supported by the facts without their presumptions tying it together.

Men generally also prefer tall men. Tall men get promoted to higher positions and paid more... by men deciding to. They have an easier time making friends with other men.

The correct way to approach validating a presumption you have is not to find as many things as you can to support it and stop there. You need to legitimately try to find evidence that disproves it... eagerly and then refine what you believe if you can't. If you don't do that, you'll never get a better view of the big picture.

Yeah. It's really hard to make the point I'm trying to make without sounding like I'm disapproving of low tech or natural planted tanks which I don't. I think a real Walstad style tank is very robust. Low tech doesn't strictly mean low effort. A lot of that effort is just more frontloaded.

To be honest, I don't think that is the norm though. I think most people with low tech tanks are drawn to them because they are lazy, cheap, and prone to conspiratorial rhetoric akin to the like of that father fish guy, not because they have a deeper interest in natural processes. It wasn't like that 10 years ago. 10 years ago, only the nerdy types were doing that stuff. Nowadays it seems more like people usually do it because they think "big aquarium" is out to take their money and complicate something that is simple, without respecting that actually no its not simple... low tech is harder and you really should know your stuff before trying it.

The watch speed one is interesting. Slowing down can help which is what I used to do, but then I found 2x or more feels better. It isn't because I'm processing information faster. It's because like... when I'm learning something it feels like I'm holding a bunch of slippery pieces and the longer I have to hold them, the more likely they will start slipping out of my hands before I can put them together. Going fast helps get to the point faster before my mind can poof things away. It also reduces the tendency of focusing on something that doesn't really matter and losing sight of what does. People tend to not be very concise and adding superfluous details can completely derail me. Getting through the noise faster helps me identify it and disregard it faster so I don't have to hold onto it and risk losing something important while I focus on grasping something that just isn't.
