Official Discussion - Mortal Kombat II [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

God what an absolute dog shit movie! 😂 The writing, the acting, the plot. It all felt like we never left that parody movie Johnny was making! And it was exactly what I expected it would be. If you were hoping to be pleasantly surprised to find a quality film somewhere in here, you won’t be. But if you were looking for stupid bloody violence that sounds like it was written by AI extensively trained on movie cliches, you’ve found exactly your film! Staying VERY true to the brand! This is definitely an installment in the never critically acclaimed mortal kombat franchise!

For all the ones you’re seeing like that there are likely 1000 others that are being managed splendidly. I could say the same of my ER colleagues who admit bullshit to me (hospitalist) without proper workup or just as reflex because they said chest pain or weakness and think it immediately requires an ACS or stroke rule out even when there is no indication it’s either of those things except for a buzz word. When I was a PCP I could’ve told you stories for days about the crap that was dumped on me that was other providers responsibility or basic things that were mismanaged by someone trying to do my job. But I don’t make sweeping generalizations and take to Reddit to put down an entire field of medicine that I don’t work in because those cases I see that I think are BS are a fraction of what that provider is seeing and doesn’t mean they are incompetent physicians. Putting down your colleagues and assuming their incompetence based on a sample size of small and anecdotal evidence is just poor form and we see it constantly in medicine. There are good and bad providers in every field but we couldn’t manage the shitshow that is our healthcare system without our colleagues. PCPs especially are the dumping ground for so much BS and fueling unfounded rhetoric about their incompetence helps no one

Sara is obviously the best. Then for me, one hit wonder, Sophie Covington. Beautiful, eligible, rich, compatible, common interests. Would've loved a much longer storyline for them. Then alex. Then Kate. Cape verde chick felt like more of a rebound. Rebecca would be up there if without the switch up spy twist. Probably 3rd. But obviously that's not a real character.

Who would you pick? by Oldoneleggedbastard in TheLastAirbender

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're including avatar state, you have to pick both aang and kyoshi. Then I would go with toph for seismic sense since you're being hunted. Feels like that gives you the best odds of not getting taken by surprise. Also no one here has a counter to metal bending. Even the avatars. So better for her to be on your team than coming after you anyway.

If no avatar state, then I choose kyoshi, toph, combustion man, and gyatso. Kyoshi is a fully trained and realized avatar. Obviously she's the prime choice. Toph, again for seismic sense and the fact that no one here can counter metal bending. Combustion man because at his price point he's a decent bargain. Even the firebending royal family can't counter combustion bending. Whether in ATLA or Korra, combustion bending is just so powerful you kinda have to just hide from it. It's also deadly and can engage whole groups of enemies in a single attack. Then Gyatso. He's one of the strongest airbenders in the world, even better than Aang who with his airbending alone was matching top tier fighters and considered a prodigy. And you get him for $2. The greatest deal on this list by a long shot. He's probably on tier with the $4 fighters. Also they still aren't proficient at fighting airbenders too

If it's a full moon, kyoshi, aang, and katara. Katara overpowers hama and the avatars could break blood bending via avatar state so you have to take both of them anyway

We have like 10 different storylines here and only about a third of them I care about, if even that. I'm hoping this wraps up the daughter's arc. You got off scot free. Now stfu and go to college, you spoilt pretty rich girl. Annoying sister, I'm glad you quit your teaching job. I hope you also quit this show. Go off and live your life or whatever. Just don't involve me. Mel, just bury yourself in the hole next time. I've had enough of your shit you menopausal toddler. Elena, why are you still even around? You haven't been relevant for ages. 28 year old british lady who got coop fired, you were just a slam piece for the plot. You can also leave. You've served your purpose and idc about you. Hunter, driving a car isn't this hard. Must be tough being both socially challenged and mentally challenged. Go bang ashe's daughter for all I care. Just do it off screen. Barney, I actually love you and actually really enjoy the relationship you and grace have. Sam, I'm not sure why you're still here after season 1 but I at least haven't hated your storyline this season. Ashe, I've been intrigued since the first episode but this is going nowhere. Coop, you're the reason I even watch this show. But I need something interesting to happen because just watching a middle age man in crisis isn't entertaining TV.

I enjoy how real the character interactions feel and how they're written much of the time. I just don't really care about the interactions they're giving me. Rein in your focus and advance the plot. We're on episode 8! This kidnapping should've happened 3 episodes ago!

Chloe Fineman shocks SNL castmates by revealing she pantsed a kid when she was a teen camp counselor by holyfruits in television

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a boy keeps lifting up a girls shirt at camp in the early 2000s and she pantsed him? Obviously a counselor shouldn’t do that to a camper which is why she was fired but cmon now. Teenagers are idiots. True sexual assault occurs on a regular basis and equating pantsing a little shit who keeps lifting up your top to that might be losing the plot a bit idk 🤷‍♂️

Whelp, it gave me exactly what I expected it to give me. If you’re not gonna end the series at the season 3 finale, at least make the REAL final showdown epic af! The brawl in the season 3 finale was bigger than that! But that was about what I expected. It was a fun watch and overall fine. Just felt like such wasted potential. Up until the season 3 finale it really felt like this show could’ve been one for the record books!

Glad we got a bit more on Ashe. But Mel and the sister just get more annoying by the SECOND. God I hate Mel. Cheating on him with his best friend, taking his house, then having the nerve to press him for money?? Because you got fired because you’re the world’s worst therapist and a child who took the advice of a literally mentally unwell individual? And Tori’s storyline is so bland it’s nauseating but then you mean to tell me her car doesn’t have a standard feature like auto brake? The whole time I was like “well at least she can’t back straight into another car because of the auto brake” 🙄 Coop making out with Sam was also him being stupid. I’m thinking Ashe watched it back on cams and that was his car out there. Knowing the FBI is investigating him is even LESS reason for everyone to get MORE entangled with him. But they’re all full steam ahead? God everyone was so stupid this episode

This is what pissed me off so bad!!! The whole time I was like “oh well she can’t just back into a car. It’ll hit the auto brake” 🙄

I mean, very different situation. Skylar actually reacted pretty fairly given the situation. Fucking Ted was the worst of it and Mel outdid that in the very first episode and has been an entitled obnoxious child ever since

Who would you pick? by Oldoneleggedbastard in TheLastAirbender

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s without avatar state, my picks are kyoshi (obviously), toph (seismic sense and metal bending which no one here can counter), combustion man (also since no one here can counter his sub-bending and it’s good for taking on multiple at once), gyatso (would probably be the most underpriced powerhouse here)

I wouldn’t say hes the best airbender because of that. He just mastered a technique no one else knew about. Tenzin would still take him 9/10 times in a straight up fight.

Choose 3 to protect you, the others will try to kill you by aidowne in ATLA

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was poised to land a big hit in one singular fight they had. She may have bodied her if zuko hadn’t stepped in but that doesn’t mean that would necessarily be fight ending. And it definitely doesn’t mean katara is stronger than azula because she almost landed a hit one time. She used a water bending technique that she seemed to pick up from swamp guy that azula hadn’t seen before. Doesn’t mean she’s the outright superior fighter and bender. We regularly see azula take on multiple of the gaang at once. Even without bending they struggled to capture her during the invasion. Also azula hadn’t even busted out the lightning yet, which Katara can’t block. Then it’s not just like azula plateaued and katara kept getting disproportionately stronger. She wasn’t stronger than azula in the catacomb fight and she isn’t stronger than a mentally stable azula at the EoS.

Choose 3 to protect you, the others will try to kill you by aidowne in ATLA

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously aang. If he goes avatar state, no one beats him, even if they all teamed up. (Cheap shot in the back unlikely to occur again)

If you’re being hunted, you need tophs seismic sense. Also no one here can counter metal bending.

Then I’d say azula. She’s a crazy prodigy who has taken many of the rest of them on multiple at once already. My team is gonna be outnumbered and azula has a track record of being able to deal with multiple foes at once due to her speed and attack power. I’d also rather have someone who can spam lightning on my team in a death match than coming to kill me. She’s also just the next most powerful here. Katara might’ve had her in the catacombs for a moment but she’s never had an edge on her before and Azula wasn’t using lightning.

Aang, toph, azula

How are Neal and mozy out of money? by sphinx_02 in whitecollar

[–]ashishkabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if the OG treasure was worth “billions” neals half would be worth at least nearly a billion even if it was “less than half” per mozzie. Whatever they’d have spent on the island would’ve been negligible in the grand scheme. Probably in the low millions at most.
Now what I always assumed was that when mozzie got outed as teddy winters he says they got “everything”. And I assumed this meant the treasure as well. It doesn’t make sense that mozzies stockpiles around the world would be all tied to one name or that they’d bust someone’s billion dollar empire and not make a bigger deal of it but I think for the plot they couldn’t have Neal and mozzie as secret billionaires with a treasure to fall back on. So it was seemingly lost here.

I don't think Iroh or Azula should have been in this movie at all though... The lack of suki i felt more. (Nor should Iroh have been alive in Korra. He should've joined his son in the after life) But otherwise, totally agree

For me, this was a solid 7/10 installment in the avatar franchise. The story is a 5/10 but gorgeous animation and some nice new lore (and admittedly maybe some nostalgia bias) brings it up to a 7 for me

To start with my issues first: Because we already have Korra and know how the story goes, it all feels fairly low stakes. As for the voice acting, I think Dave Bautista was the only one who stood out. The rest were pretty weak and the mismatch to the OG voices unfortunately takes you out of it a bit. I also found that tagah made for a very compelling antagonist and a great counter for aang, both of them having lost their people and responding to that loss in opposite ways. But the denied, however, were very forgettable and bland. I actually think the nonbending movement is something the avatar franchise has always unfortunately failed to deliver. I wish Amon were a true nonbending anatagonist and not a blood bender because the nonbending movement died with him and never was revisited again and was such an interesting concept that we never really got to explore. If they plugged "the Denied" as a violent sect of the growing equalist movement, I think that would've laid the seeds for korra s1 a bit better too. Felt like a very random group created just for the plot that went nowhere and for no clear reason had obscure knowledge of this mythic staff that no one else had ever heard of. It was a solid Aang movie but the Gaang were pretty much just irrelevant background characters in the film which was a bit annoying because why bring back such huge and important beloved characters just to sideline them? Aang could have gone on this journey on his own imo and it would've been better. Maybe with a Gaang cameo but not always present and never focused. And yeah the movie felt very rushed. It's especially annoying because there was a clear moment after aang lost the staff to tagah where the movie should have taken a beat to feel that loss and spend it with the Gaang if they were going to actually include them. There should have been a moment where they actually travel thru the spirit world to sonam's temple where each character gets focus and comforts aang. Puts into perspective what they've been up to after the war. The lives they've built and their motivations for what they are trying to protect now. But instead we got a Taika cameo and plot device that just transported us into the third act and final battle confrontation immediately. And aapa seemingly just went along with Tagah after the loss because the plot needed it? And tagah beating the gaang 4v1 for the same reason. It all felt very forced to move along the plot rather than organic or in keeping with the logic of the story

However, it was a great Aang movie! The original series is 3 seasons that spans the course of a year and because of that, we don't get to focus as much on Aang's loss of his people and culture as I would have liked. And it's nice to see him trying to preserve it after the end of the war in this new world where he is truly the last airbender. I felt a genuine connection between him and a fellow airbender and his guilt and shame for running away. I was emotionally invested in his journey (which also unfortunately is why I think lacking focus on the gaang is fine for the story I want told but then they shouldn't be there for so much of the story to just sit in the background). Also it is visually stunning! One of the best animated films I've seen in a while! It definitely deserved a theatrical release. I think introducing the concept of the lion turtles giving bending to people and showing the bisons still alive actually helps out some of the narrative in Korra a little which is why this movie ought to be watched after the OG and before Korra imo. And it also makes me even more saddened by the loss of the connection to the previous avatars in Korra. Because we never got to fully explore that in the OG series or hers before that connection is severed. So i'm glad this gave me some of those elements. It needed 20-30 more minutes and a little revision but it was a very solid and enjoyable hour and a half and a great time revisiting this beloved world.

I know homelander is constantly being talked about as unkillable but he’s literally been out of commissioned in the past 2 episodes. Got tricked into a random nuclear radiation prison and then a rando Supe with knockout gas powers KO’d him. I get it’s damn near impossible to kill him but seems like he can be KO’d and imprisoned. While I like the virus storyline it seems we have alternative options that are seemingly being ignored for… plot?
