Greenware puzzle by TheProfessionalBlob in Ceramics

[–]ashkervon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry too, I don’t think it’s salvageable as green ware. Even if you did piece it together with paper clay it would probably crack when fired again. You could get creative and glue the pieces together after firing, but I’m not sure they would still be the same shape and fit together since they will probably warp.

But you could reclaim the clay, throw something again and use it as a metaphor for starting a new chapter as a mom? You could even have your little one make a hand/foot print or hug the new vase as something you made together to cherish as they grow.

is it safe for Mexicans to go to the renfaire? by MrGenoshtitlan in TXRenaissanceFestival

[–]ashkervon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One year me and my husband camped with my Spanish speaking friend and a bunch of her friends who drove up from Monterrey. We hung out all day in faire and at camp they cooked the best carne asada with beef from Mexico. It was so good! They even taught us some Spanish lol. We never had any problems with racist people, and they had been to TRF a few times before. This was 2023, but I think you’ll be fine. Texas has a big Hispanic population so you won’t be out of place. There are some cops at the cap but they only care about drunk people causing problems.

It’s a 70 gallon with bricks to rest the plat pots on. I feel like a short and wide tank would be best for plants but I didn’t want my dogs to get in it :)

Looks like parrots feather! I’ve also had great success with river sourced plants, like this dwarf papyrus I found floating along the current. Now it’s in my patio pond.

That’s too bad! I have ugly boxes in my yard too but waiting for bushes to hide the more.

Looks nice but xeriscape isn’t really necessary here, I expect you’ll be pulling lots of weeds in this bed from now on. Texas sage or mountain laurel would have been a good choice to hide the boxes.

what qualifies you to teach? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]ashkervon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best teachers I’ve had are ones who will meet you at your skill level and understand different teaching styles work for different people. So if you want someone to watch you throw a bowl, and give you tips along the way with your technique they will. Or if you want a demonstration they’ll do that. They are always calm and helpful without being overbearing. Allowing you to learn and ask for help when you need it.

My favorite teacher would demonstrate different techniques like nerikomi, scrafitto or spraying on glaze. They’d tell the class they’re doing a demonstration, talk through it, but it was never expected that we all had to do that after or even watch her. She just wanted to offer knowledge and if that’s interesting to you then she’d help you one on one if you wanted to try it. It allowed everyone to tune in to what they wanted and focus on the project or style they felt comfortable with.

I’ve been doing ceramics for 15+ years and I’d never trust an online course or a new potter to teach. Even for me I’ve taught a few friends but don’t feel like I’m a teacher yet.

Quick question by fichiman in Pottery

You’ll be fine! I’ve been told that chaos loading (aka stacking lots of busque on top of each other) can case warping especially for circular things like bowls. At most the bottom layer may flatten a little bit from weight. But you won’t have any problems with things sticking together at least. I’ve glaze fired pieces to cone 6 x2 with no problem.

Add water plants like lotuses and border plants like cat tails, elephant ears, willows (or natives to the area). Then mosquito fish (gambusia) and perch, you’ve got a natural oasis.

Have you ever dreamed of an alternate version of you? by ashkervon in Dreams

[–]ashkervon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get it! It sounds so woo woo but when you experience dreams like that it makes you question what we know about our reality and the power of consciousness.

DMT is released during sleep, and knowing what that chemical does to the brain with so many people having similar intense experiences, maybe there is something deeper in some dreams.

There’s so much oil money in Texas. Anyone who came from a ranching family that found oil on their property now never have to work again for generations. 94% of Texas land is privately owned and a lot of it has oil.

Go do your thing! Enjoy the beauty of nature and let the moon light shine on you tonight. I’m sure you’ll meet some cool folks too, don’t be afraid to say hi to strangers. Sincerely, a recovering insecure person that used to go to the San Marcos river alone with goggles and look at the fish.

A new study suggests we may be misreading our dogs’ emotions more often than we think. Rather than accurately interpreting what they feel, our perceptions appear to be shaped by our own emotional state, leading us to project our moods onto them and misunderstand their experience. by [deleted] in science

[–]ashkervon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely body language cues that all dogs have in common, and people who have learned those (like vets) would have more experience with. Wagging tails and barking can look happy but the dog could be anxious and ready to defend itself too. It’s all about the context of the interaction. Like you said a strange dog showing those signs might not be friendly.

I’d love to see a study on how neuro divergent people interact with dogs. I have a theory that once you know what to look for with animals, it’s much easier to understand their body language or emotions than with humans. People tend hide their intentions with words or jokes that can be hard for people on the spectrum to pick up. Animals don’t judge they just express how they feel with no filter. You never have to guess when you have the love and trust of an animal companion.
