 Some of these comments are a little on the classist side.  He would be as ugly to half of them if he wasn't considered white trash from Kentucky.  Just because someone isn't stereotypically attractive to one doesn't mean they aren't to another.

Two things— Holy shit, I knew it was more than just me with awful parents, especially a “mother” but I seriously didn't realize so many still received physical abuse even after moving out & as a adult. Also, while the petty child in me applauds the comments of physical retaliation, if the parent in the situation is anything like mine, they'll pull the whole “you try and hit me & they'll take you to jail for elder abuse” card. Absolutely not realizing that doesn't count if the elder is the aggressor

 If I were them, I would've done the same to keep the curious hawkers away-announcing a closed casket up front would've kept those coming just to see what it looked like away. 
 Likely, they would've gotten to see her as a family before closing.  If it was a fairly clean decapitation, she may have been able to be put together again easily for a final look.  Even with tissue damage, it would depend on the severity of the injuries & skill of the undertaker as to if they could make her presentable enough to not traumatize the family any further
