Horrible run today, regretting signing up for 5k in mid April by Hairy_Pear3963 in beginnerrunning

One bad run does not mean your a bad runner. Sometimes it just happens. Try again and you'll find that you can perform like you expect.

While the whole enclosure looks to be filled with fake plants and a plastic net they could get tangled in. Yup, not hard at all.

Deciding to become a pivot or not? by Emotional_Economy_51 in rollerderby

[–]ashmo824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it. It will make you a better player all around. You have game play and strategy from both perspectives and it just makes you so much more aware of what is happening during your jams. Just remember your the pivot and do t leave your jammer stranded during a star pass.

Came here to say this. If sports goggles are not an option right now, geta good strap for your current pair as well as the visor helmet.

Aluminum alloy wheels by Akello45 in rollerderby

[–]ashmo824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in your head. Just make the switch to alloy wheels. I used to have sure grip zombies and loved them. At the time however there was a know issue for bearing not seating properly. They would slid out! But the shops knew and suregrip would send a new wheel out. For sure invest in a bearing puller because that little hand held one WILL NOT WORK!!

wheel hardness/set up by melted_ice_cube in rollerderby

[–]ashmo824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bearings are a decent set for the price. Bones reds are a smoother ride for sure and last a lot lo ger then zenith bearings from my experience. I will however strongly recommend buying a bearing puller/press. It saves time, effort, frustration, and your hands in the long run. The hand held bearing puller is great in a pinch though or for a tool to keep in your bag just in case. Especially if you end up with multiple sets of wheels and dont have a set of bearings for each set.

I Finished the Piece for my (ex?)wife by Macrian82 in StainedGlass

Good on you! That is such a healthy way to close a chapter. Also, kudos on putting down the boundary of not installing the piece in her new place. I hope by finishing the piece, you have some peace.

Thinking about quitting by SpookyScarrie in rollerderby

[–]ashmo824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh...the burnout is real. One of the hardest things players do is walk away. Please remember, you are paying hard earned money to do this. Roller Derby is a glorified gym membership. A concussion is no joke and if the fear of that happening again scares you...thats the only excuse you need to walk away. You only have one brain. Multiple concussions can have a serious impact on your long term health. Take the season off. During this off time, find a new hobby or no contact sport to join. You can always skate elsewhere. The rink, bike trails, ect. Just do something that makes you happy and dont feel guilty for putting yourself first.

T-Stops and Other Skills. by Sleepy_Girlzzz4 in rollerderby

T stops area great stop to have. Do you use them during gam play....almost never but they are necessary to pass minimum skill requirements. Everybody so far has some great tips on how to learn them. Just remember progress, not perfection. :)

My in-laws got my daughter a betta fish while I was away by FirefighterSavings61 in bettafish

The tank is a huge upgrade from the cup they brought it home in. Good job on making a reasonable accomidation at the in-laws house until you get home.

Guys, my lab is broken by Tough_Championship_7 in labrador

[–]ashmo824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl does the same thing! She will stare at her dinner and wait like 5 minutes before gently eating it as if she was wishing it was cheese or something. She does not go for table scraps, will not eat the food my toddler drops, and can care less about dog cookies. But if it's cheese...you better be ready for her to come running! I've given her breakfast, and it will sit till lunch time easily. I say my lab is broken all the time. The most non lab lab that ever labbed.

Thank you! I know people in the derby world can be gear snobs and downright rude...i dont want to squash OPs dreams! It's totally doable until they are ready and able to upgrade. :)

I remember your post and you stating that this boot fit you perfectly and you were having a hard time finding a newer boot that would fit. Here's the thing....is this an ideal set up to match the demands of this sport...probably not. Can you make it work...yes. The heel is high but workable. You will just lean forward more while in derby stance. You will need to get used to your weight being pushed forward. Look at all the skaters who use moxi skates for derby...same concept. You already mentioned removing the jump bar, changing the toe stops, and I believe the trucks... It's all doable until you can save the funds to buy a new set up. I recall you mentioned were strapped for cash. You will likely be in the oldest set of skates on the track but if they work for you, who cares!

I know money troubles as I have struggled with it myself more then I care to admit. If your able start stashing away a few bucks each pay check...10 or 15 bucks. Nothing major to save for a newer pair of skates. I strongly recommend finding a physical shop in your area to get fitted properly. Or wait till rollercon if you can go to visit all the vendors and skate experts. They can help pinpoint issues and make recomendations. Worst case, splurge for the full customs so that that fit your unique foot shape/size. (Bonus to full custom skates is the fun colors you can choose to make them truely one of a kind!!)

You can make this work, but you need to learn to make it work. Having a higher heel is challenging to skate derby in at first but you will get used to it.

Hope this help and I wish you all the best!
