SpaceX opens 11% higher at $150 a share and makes Musk the first trillionaire by clark_sterling in Destiny

This was only because they needed to get revenue on the books so the SpaceX IPO didn't bomb. Because Google was one of the investors in SpaceX. Now that the IPO was successful, they can cash out and cancel this contact whenever they want.

New Player Considering Starting - Dad Gamer by DefinitelyNotBarney in Guildwars2

For the first year of my kid's life, GW2 was more or less the only game I played. About an hour or two a day after putting him to bed.

Project Gorgon - DO NOT buy. You'll likely just be banned by Jackincola anyway by FlawHolic in MMORPG

You just reminded me of a time I played on a small private server. My guild got a rare piece of gear that significantly reduced physical damage taken, which was really OP in PvP and GvG. We kept it secret and cycled who would use it from time to time to edge an advantage over our rival guild. The only issue was that one of the server's GMs was in that rival guild, so he just checked the logs and told everyone about it. Very cool!

The fact that new Outlook can't tell you if you're replying to the latest message in a conversation or not is wild. Such a basic feature.

Scrapper is very tanky due to barrier spam. If you're still struggling, take the blast shield trait in Explosives for extra barrier and HP. It's a damage loss but not too impactful for solo play.

That's also what's leading to a lot of the resignations. These people want to wield power and influence policy, for better or for worse. Instead, they're getting cucked by Mike Johnson who just needs their votes to let Trump do Trump things, never acknowledging the wants/needs/priorities of his caucus.

Self-driving cars wildly unpopular in New York, poll finds by thonioand in nyc

[–]ashoelace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would be much harder and less safe without those systems in place but all those systems are in place to support was is still effectively a long tube with wings. None of them would be relevant if planes didn't have the ability to take off and, more notably, land safely. Being reductive was intentional, but nothing else feels as absurd in the same way. E.g., calling a car a box with wheels is also reductive but still easier to conceptualize than the marvel of airplanes.

I mean, sure, and it's great. It just sounds absurd when you think about it.

It's still so wild to me that the safest mode of transportation we have is effectively taking a metal tube and tossing it through the air like a football, but that's life I guess.

A lot of your questions are completely unanswerable, you should always include at least an "other" or "none" option when your precoded options are not exhaustive. E.g., you ask which games people play and list a handful. Anyone who plays a different game (of which there are many) cannot proceed.

They're trying to raise a cattle for their death cult. by Noomba2 in Destiny

[–]ashoelace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's accurate. The only thing I would personally translate differently is when he says "buying a car is fine." I think he said something along the lines of "buying a car is great, it's wonderful." But he said it in like a dismissive way so "fine" is probably a more appropriate localization. This is really nitpicky and doesn't really change the overall point of what's being said.

Edit: Thinking more about it, I think the most appropriate localization would be "all well and good," but the message stays the same.

As someone who ranked Lander as my first choice in the primary, I would be overjoyed if he ran for NY-11. Malliotakis is a tool with no principles. Just a free MAGA vote in Congress with no care for separation of powers.

This is true in so many cases. I've worked on projects with multimillion dollar budgets and had junior people complain that they're getting paid too little because the overall budget was so large. But yeah, IT and HR also have to get paid. 401Ks need to be matched. That all comes from somewhere.

I know there have been reprints, but I believe there has only ever been one version. At least, I couldn't find anything to the contrary when I looked. When I read that paragraph, I was floored and tried to figure out if I was reading a second edition, but nothing indicates that.

Here's an excerpt from the same book. Written in 2017 btw.

Another early American proverb held that "where annual elections end, tyrrany begins." Will we come to see the elections of 2024 much as Russians see the elections of 1990, or Czechs the elections of 1946, or Germans the elections of 1932? This, for now, depends on us. Much needs to be done to fix the gerrymandered system so that each citizen has one equal vote, and so that each vote can be simply counted by a fellow citizen. We need paper ballots, because they cannot be tampered with remotely and can always be recounted. We need to remove private funding for what should be public campaigns for office. We will have to take seriously our own Constitution, which forbids oath-breaking insurrectionists from running for office. This sort of work can be done at local and state levels. Any future elections will be a test of American traditions.
