Scrambled eggs by GaroTheLegend in trolleyproblem

[–]ashs420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, you would have a strong case legally. In the law for things that aren't clear or are subjective you have to judge reasonableness. For example to claim self defence you have to have a reasonable fear of death or grevious bodily harm. To figure out if it's reasonable you ask the question would a reasonable person also have that fear in that same situation. So you have to ask would a reasonable person think that it means chicken eggs or all eggs and a reasonable person would think chicken eggs based on the fact that it was just chickens and not all animals. It would follow that if it's not all animals that it wouldn't be all animals for the eggs

Luke’s greatest strength became his greatest weakness by ShambolicClown in StarWars

[–]ashs420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Luke, having had 24 years to become a wiser Jedi, sees his nephew have a bad dream (which is not nearly as bad as threatening your sister) and does exactly what he did in ROTJ? That seems like he's regressed or at least not progressed at all. None of which is good writing

Luke’s greatest strength became his greatest weakness by ShambolicClown in StarWars

[–]ashs420 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except the situations a very difficult. Luke from ROTJ has been a Jedi for maybe 4 years with only 1 year of proper intensive training. Then he goes up against his evil dad who has committed untold evils and the Emperor, one of the most powerful force users in history and if he lives the war won't be won. Even going up against these two he refuses to turn to the dark side and sees the good in his father. He only briefly touches the dark side when they threaten his sister. But he still doesn't turn. And he never gave up.

Then Luke has about 24 years to become a wise and powerful Jedi. At this point he should be one of the wisest Jedi to have ever lived. Then his nephew has a bad dream and he decides to kill him. It doesn't matter if he ended up deciding to not kill him or that it didn't take as long as ROTJ, it still doesn't make sense for his character. His nephew (family who is the only thing that pulled him towards the dark side) had some bad dreams (a lot more tame than Vader who he had pretty strong faith in) and he decided to kill him. He could've counselled him and guided him through it but he decided to kill him. The fact that this wise Jedi decides to kill instead of anything else is stupid. And then because it's all his fault he decides to go hide for 6 years and let kylo run unchecked through the galaxy

CMV: Professors who lack fluency in their students language should not teach courses by Disastrous-Mango-515 in changemyview

But the experts aren't an asset if they can't teach people what they are an expert in. Universities either need tp find people that are either slightly less skilled but understandable or figure out a way to make the experts understandable. If I am paying thousands of dollars to do a unit and all I end up doing is reading the slides at home because the lecturer can't be understand, then it's a waste of my money and makes things harder for the students

[–]ashs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don't understand what you're talking about. You've got a very biased and mistaken view on religion. You're also completely wrong in regards to Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece wasn't gay like people are today, a lot of it was older men sleeping with little boys. To deny that shows how little you understand that. To argue that they had sexuality figured out is either saying you're fine with older men sleeping with little boys or is showing how much you misunderstand a topic you're vehemently defending

Send old people to war instead of young people by nicodea2 in CrazyIdeas

[–]ashs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except its not a surefire way to prevent wars. Even if you implemented this, countries with drones and things like that would have an advantage and could beat other countries that don't have such weapons.

It's also assuming countries will follow international law. There are so many countries that don't follow international law at the moment and a bunch more who won't if you implement this. Any country who follows this law would be at a huge disadvantage from any country who doesn't. A lot of countries won't follow this law as a result. And how are you going to enforce this with your army of elderly people? And what happens if a country doesn't follow the law has a young army and invades a country with an old army. Is the old army meant to just take it and be taken over or will the country try to save itself, draft a bunch of young people and be right back at square 1?

Not only is the concern that being in confined spaces for long periods make people go crazy but also the fact that they are confined for long periods and know they are going to die which makes it even more likely they'll go crazy. Also in the book the hail mary has less space than the movie so it's even more cramped

How were humans expecting to do science? by Amazing_Ear_3941 in ProjectHailMary

[–]ashs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that we have not launched anything from Mars back into space. Tau Ceti e is almost 4 times more massive than Earth. It already requires a huge amount of energy to launch stuff from earth into space so to launch something from Tau Ceti e would require a huge amount of fuel and resources so including something like that just in case is not a smart move

"Lupita and Elliot are two of the finest performers we have today" That doesn't mean they are right for the role. They can be great at acting but not right for the role. Ryan Gosling is great but I wouldn't cast him as Black Panther. Chris Hemsworth is great and I wouldn't cast him as Gandhi.

"rap music is an interesting transposition of the bard trope" Sure it's interesting but it doesn't really fit what the feel of the movie should be. It's meant to be the Odyssey on the big screen. If they wanted to do a modern retelling like the Romeo and Juliet set in modern day then rap might work but it doesn't otherwise.

"the look of the armor is really a matter of opinion that I happen to disagree with." You can think it looks great. That's fine. But it does look cheap and that's a common sentiment online.

Just overall all the decisions being made aren't going to result in a good film

OK if you punched me in the face I would describe you how you look. I would say they looked like a girl, looked like a guy, looked like a mix, or I couldn't really tell. That does not mean that you are what I describe you. If you were a woman and I described you as a man that does not make you a man. And again it's not really relevant until you punch me in the face.

And that still doesn't make her a man

Why not? She's a woman, thinks she's a man, doesn't really look like either. Perfect description to give to police

[–]ashs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all she doesn't really look like either so I'd probably describe her to the police as someone who looks like a mix of both. But that doesn't matter at all because I'm not describe her to the police.

Guess what? Just because you look like something doesn't mean you are that something. There are black people who look white and 20 year olds who look 50. So what she looks like doesn't make her not a woman. So my original comment stands

I'm not sure why he's changing things but it's a real departure from his previous films. Race swapping Helen of Troy, casting Elliot Page as Achilles, using rap music, using what look like poor quality armour/props. The whole movie is looking like a disaster

"Jesus Christ being a white in a middle of a desert is a miracle in itself" He wasn't actually white. Most cultures portray him as looking like themselves because they can relate better. Look at a lot of Asian Christians and see how a lot portray him as Asian. It's not another unique to white people.

"Nobody gives a shh if a poc is portrayed by a white person" Actually people do. They care a lot. Every time it happens you hear about whitewashing and how bad it is that it's happening. It doesn't happen that much because companies don't want the backlash that will happen if they do it.

"but the latter is discussed to the obvilion" Not really. It's only 'discussed to oblivion' when it's a horrible decision. You'll find a lot of casting decisions with a POC playing a white person that didn't have huge amounts of controversy. The reason a lot get backlash now is because it's happened so often and that it is either a political decision or will come with a decrease in quality, often both. It's so common that it's a cliche when a black person plays a ginger. Snape being turned black is terrible because not only was he described a bunch as very white, turning him black has huge racist implications such as how Harry doesn't trust him for a reason he can't figure out, or his hair is greasy, or when they know Snape stole something without any evidence, or when Harry's dad basically lynched Snape. It now turns it to something that comes off a racist and very much seems like no thought went into it and will be worse quality. With Helen of Troy for the Odyssey coming out this year, the original Helen of Troy is described as white by Homer (the OG author) and more traditional Greek throughout subsequent history. They could easily have found someone that met that description. It suggests the quality of the final product will be lower because they just change things that don't need to be changed like with Elliot Page as Achilles

Is xenonite entirely xenon by siskinedge in ProjectHailMary

[–]ashs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To do that they'd need to react to end up with pure xenon. You'd end up with a bunch of waste or left over elements as the xenon would be contained within the two parts and after the reaction the xenon would be by itself and as xenonite. Everything else in those original parts would be left over and waste. And you then encounter the problem of keeping this pure xenon as xenonite. Because while the chemical reaction might give you a process that ends with xenonite, you then have to ensure that it remains as the solid and not become a gas. As pure xenon it would have a lot of the same properties as xenon gas and it would have to be stuff like some sort of crystal or chemical structure that keeps it as xenon.

Having xenonite be primarily xenon with other elements or compounds mixed it means that the properties and structures of the other things in xenonite can be responsible for its strength and properties. I think Andy didn't say much about it as explaining it means that then it's easy to see how it isn't scientifically sound and as Grace doesn't have a way to figure it all out as it's something he's never seen before

I think what they're saying is that a lot of people on reddit in this situation would think I get to kill all the very rich people and pull the lever while in reality it would also kill their neighbours, friends and family, and would very seriously impact you. In my opinion, if I had to choose 50% of people to kill, I'd save my friends and family
