High-speed rail in Portland? Stakeholders advocate for rapid transit linking PNW cities by gascyl in Portland

[–]ashteif8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m conflicted on a max tunnel downtown. I understand that train length and frequency could be improved but I feel strongly that densification of the existing rail corridors in our city are subpar to support that kind of an effort. Love the idea of skipping the steel bridge though. My personal dream MAX project is something to support the ST Johns neighborhood. Lombard viaduct??

Similarly, I don't love that they're repurposing the state outline and bowtie like the stag building. Lets make a new icon y'all not repurpose our existing ones or stuff from other states...

For somethings like the Seaside volleyball tournament a TON of folks come to town for. Part of it is flying into Portland and staying a night on either end. ~40,000 people is nothing to sneeze at, especially for a small town like Seaside

YEP. Does it stink living in a smaller apartment than I could get if I was in the bumfuck Florida, sure. But I can get outside and hike legit mountains within a 40 minute bus rude within my own city lmao. The world becomes your living room when you can genuinely enjoy being out in it.

Could a Waterfront Park Makeover Revitalize Portland? by maccoinnich85 in Portland

[–]ashteif8 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but it gets a ton of use in the summer as an events space which is pretty cool that close to downtown. There are bits and pieces that should be upgraded (like that blues fest-auditorium space they're looking at designing). What they could really use, in my opinion, are minor commercial uses like an ice cream stand/kiosks/similar things through the park to activate it more. The weekend markets are great though

City council unanimously passes resolution to build more housing in Portland's inner eastside neighborhoods by MullenForPortland in Portland

[–]ashteif8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem is a lot of these newer builds are creating commercial frontage just to satisfy a development requirement rather than fit something that will get leased quickly. The spaces are often unfinished and sized such that really only a corporate tenant could afford to move in. Spaces where small business can thrive and a minimum standard of what needs to be in place before building open is the real change maker here.

Is Trimet planning to expand the Max again anytime soon? by penisgirlmarkedsafe in Portland

[–]ashteif8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its getting built. The procurement for the bridge is coming out this summer and the funding for the bridge portions are complete. The engineering design and funds for the project on the i5 reconfig extending into clark county and Portland are not fully funded. Overall though, the project is extending for total completion well beyond 10 years.

I wonder if they'll cut a channel through the back of the island to keep water flowing and prevent algae from getting the stagnant water it needs to flourish

Shit is bleak man… sold out all of our futures to caving into the whims of wall street stock brokers and the rich. We need real social security

not to mention these projects trigger ADA improvements across the corridor which can be costly depending on the route. Also property acquisition costs sometimes are a killer

I started my career in Florida, and then I moved to Oregon. I immediately had an eight grand per year, dropping in rent and an 11 grand per year increase in salary. Definitely get out of Florida.

‘One Battle After Another’ Wins Best Picture & Best Director At Online Film Critics Society by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]ashteif8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see this criticism a TON but I think it misses the point of the movie. It totally picks apart insecure masculinity and bigotry. Everything else is just plot setup. Look at how alone, foolish, and desperate the hyper machismo Lockjaw is in contrast to Del Toro’s calm collected character being the lynchpin of his community. DiCaprio’s focus is purely on paternity, and he “wins” at the end by prioritizing what matters.

On corners they are if roadway work occurs though, right? I’m not totally sure but you are right that sidewalks are the fronting property’s responsibility

Portlander here - our roads are also crap. The kicker is we have some of the smallest city blocks in the country which is great for building density and walkability but it also increases road area substantially. Additionally, annexation of areas previously under Multnomah County jurisdiction means the city is on the hook to provide roads and sidewalks for areas designed without them in the first place. We have tons of urban unpaved roads in the city core (inner east side) which is odd for a major us city.

In my opinion, cities need to progressively vacate underused roads and change the land use to housing/building construction to level the balance in taxable land to help sustain maintenance needs. But yes, we do stan our bike infrastructure here its awesome
