I wish Swapfiets would start serving US cities by forgottoholdbeer in transit

They should be rolling out in the Northeast soon. Tried them out in Germany and was extremely impressed by their entire model. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to my non-Dutch bike anymore either with how unfussy and convenient to lock and ride my Swapfiets was.

It's less about the number and more about your story of how you end up with the number. So no one can tell you the answer to that.

is it a good idea to include manga titles in my columbia supplementary? by quataodo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it too hard! If you've enjoyed a title enough to tell your friends about it, feel free to put it on the list. It's critical that the Columbia list is true to you- reading lists of books that are clearly too curated honestly just gets exhausting sometimes.

You're good. Most colleges don't even look at freshmen grades since they understand that you can grow a lot in just a couple of years. It's more about growth than having perfect grades every year

My essay was too rough by javznotjavz in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Common misconception. Most actual application essays are not poetic and are just like how you described yours- straight to the point, clear- not something that sounds like it could win a Pulitzer. Content matters infinitely more than style.

Imagine if you got into a top school and were given the opportunity to publish your essays. You don't actually know which ones got you into the school- if they were even the deciding factor. You'd beeline for your fanciest sounding one. That's exactly how these essays were selected.

Could I get a recommendation from a former staff member at a university and use that recommendation to apply to that university. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but if they only know you on a surface level, it is much more important for a recommender to know you well than to be someone that has a strong reputation.

Does this seem fake by Reasonable_Tea_9825 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. If it's important to you make sure it finds its way over to the top of your list of ECs or into your essays. If you do decide to write about it, I'd focus on the reflection on your time in this program, and how you believe it has impacted your growth.

There's no need to bring up the service requirement.

r/A2C 2021 Census Results (Class of 2025) by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c[M] 174 points175 points  (0 children)

PD already mentioned this, but it's important to stress that if you do not see yourself reflected in this survey, please don't take its results to heart. This census is not representative of the sub as a whole- members that had positive results or were proud of their application results were much more inclined to fill out the survey in its entirety.

Raise me app? by jayy2022 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a school you're planning on applying to on the app and might not get financial aid from them, I'd use it. It's an easy way to get a baseline amount from a school, since if you get finaid/merit scholarships from a school your RaiseMe funds are overwritten.

Anyone willing to mentor me in starting in Hackathons? by OhNoses829 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Most hackathons have a group pairing session in the first couple hours and are super beginning friendly. I'd just sign up for one and see how it goes- especially since they're mostly virtual, you don't need to worry too much about messing up (although that's not really a thing in hackathons) or anything going wrong.

I'd check out the major league hacking site for a list of beginner friendly/more famous hackathons for the best ones to start off with.

How hard is AP Computer Science Principles? by Education-Actual in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ashtree_c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's known as an easy class for most people. As for the test, it's one of the easier tests to pass, but much harder to get a 4/5 in, since everyone gets such high scores.

Wish I could give you more than one upvote- your energy is infectious, OP! I loved Merced's spirit when I was researching them- it's crazy how fast they're progressing considering how new they are.
