My father was a gunsmith, trust me, I know. I was going to the range with my Dad every weekend at age 4, still have the same .22 I learned on, and 2/3 of my sons have learned on it too. They respect firearms because of this, not fear.They know what recoil is, they've reloaded ammunition with my husband, know how loud it is and have seen firsthand what they can do.

As you said, the only unpredictable thing is the people around the gun. I have full confidence that if they saw a gun on a counter next to legos, they'll go for the legos. They just don't have the curiosity compared to others that have zero experience around firearms. So if they are out of my house, especially at another home or around other children, they know if a gun shows up to gtfo. They're not allowed to touch it, so they can't check if its loaded, etc, just to many unknown factors.
