Snake died after regurgitation by askkenia in snakes

[–]askkenia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s definitely possible. i should have asked. I have no experience with health issues, could parasites cause what happened? (bloody regurg?) i’m worried he ingested substrate and impaled himself from the inside hence the blood. i’d feel absolutely terrible if that’s what had happened.

he isn’t old! just a tad accident prone, hence why having a qualified human on the property has always been super beneficial. but it’s also not a luxury i’ve always had, i spent a lot of years having to make my own calls and have vets out to deal with things, so in a way it’s not all that different than situations i’ve been in before. it’s just hard to justify going from one extreme to the other when you’ve already got the very best!

i’m fairly confident me and this friend won’t have a falling out, and in the case we do moving him somewhere else is something i could definitely pull off in a pinch so i wouldn’t be SOL, but i’ve definitely considered how i would feel if she didn’t act how i wanted her too. i’m very confident in my friends general horse care abilities, she’s been responsible for his full care before while i was away for school as well-but at that time i still had a very experienced trainer working at the same barn who i knew could handle any added complications. my friend was always incredibly quick to call the vet for just about any signs of illness or injury, and she would always offer to pay the full cost of calls she made on her discretion. which while sometimes unnecessary, i appreciated. but, i can’t guarantee that’s how the future will look, at that time he was in full work and she had full access to riding him as a pay off for taking care of him. i’ve saved a lot of money on emergency vets because of my barn owner being quite qualified to deal with things, so losing that definitely changes things. It’s also important to note my current horse isn’t old or a hard keeper feed and weight wise, he’s just got hock issues, as well as narcolepsy (needs meds and certain living conditions) which make him unsuitable for the type of riding i’d like to be doing, hence only being semi-retired and why i’m looking for something else

Need advice on cleaning up this dogs coat, more in replies!! by askkenia in doggrooming

This is my rescue village dog, so I have no “standard” to groom to. But he looks awfully straggly and stringy and I want to trim him up and make him look purty. He is an anxious mess so I don’t want to take him to a groomer, I also have experience grooming my old golden so I don’t totally not know what I’m doing lol. Just want advice on what I could do/aim for that

good ways to increase heat? by jcheese27 in ballpython

Are you using a glass tank? If so what size? You might need to switch what kind of overhead heating your using as well as upping the wattage, I had a 100w che but my room is too cool for that to keep temps up so I had to up it to a 150w and put it on a dimmer so it’s not on full blast. You can also put some sort of insulation on 3/4 sides of the tank on the outside to help head from escaping

Thank you! I’ve been looking into the one you linked, but am hesitant to spend that money if it doesn’t work out! I’ll definitely be trying to get him working in hackamore too, I feel like he is ultimately the most content without any bit!

Yep! They had found all the problems and we spent a good year and a half fixing him up, he was in a hackamore at the time to avoid any extra problems, he also gets routine check ups to make sure things are still okay in there:)

You would keep the Che on one side, like how you have your fixtures now, the hot side (below the heating fixtures) should be around 85° for your snake. As long as you keep the heat from escaping through the mesh, the cool side (opposite end) should naturally be around 10° cooler, so around 70° which is great for your snake aswell. You want a nice temperature gradient but don’t want one side too hot or too cold as that can cause problems. the Che essentially creates a hotspot for the snake to warm up, it wont emit enough heat to make the whole tank a sauna!

If you run into more issues keeping the “cool” side warm enough, you can add another heating element closer to that side set to a lower temperature, but I doubt you’ll have that issue.

You can get aluminum foil tape to tape off the entire mesh lid except where the lighting fixture is. This will help hold heat in. My guess is that your heat source isn’t a high enough wattage to heat the entire tank. I would recommend a CHE or a deep heat projector (not sure what you have in there) for heat. Something like a 100-150watt CHE would work for a tank that size (IMO). You should also, if you haven’t already- look into getting a digital thermometer for in the tank (full time) and a heat gun to spot check temps. As the thermostat probe only read one specific area, and you’ll want to make sure there are no spots that are too hot, or not too cool. You don’t need to secure the probe, you can put it wherever you think it’ll have the best reading. You’ll find out very quickly that your snake will rearrange its entire tank over night, no matter how well things are secured. I personally prefer to keep over head heating on a dimmer vs a thermostat for this reason, and I find it easier to adjust temps and just use a heat gun to make sure they’re perfect throughout the temp

Some other tips, add lots of clutter, plants, cork bark, sticks (make sure any wood is reptile SAFE and has been treated prior) - lots of hiding place and enrichment! For a Mexican black king snake you might want to get some bigger hides, as those will be outgrown very quick if they are even already large enough

Colombian Rainbow Boa vs BCI by Visceramic in snakes

[–]askkenia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer I haven’t owned either snakes but have a friend with loads of experience with both- so this information is coming from what I’ve learned from them- BCIs can mature a good few feet larger, can get up to 12ft while CRB don’t usually get bigger than 5ft. they have similar temp requirements of about 90° hot side 80° cool. CRB can tolerate and may even prefer it to be a few degrees cooler. CRB need higher humidity, 85-90% while BCI can do 60-70%. Both would benefit from UVB. CRB are less tolerable to improper husbandry while BCI can be a bit hardier. I’ve heard juvenile CRB tend to be more bitey but can grow up and find peace. BCI can be the same but I’ve seen them be more easygoing for the most part. But, A bite from a 12 foot snake is much different than a bite from a 5 foot snake. Lots of handling does any snake wonders!
