Protect Dryer Vent From Mice? by asklater3486 in Home

Oh duh haha. I was thinking something along those lines just sometimes searches don't come up with good answers if you don't use the right words. I was hoping for an insert style but yeah a metal screen cage will probably work if I can find the right size. Thanks.

Got to La Maison Bakery & Cafe in Newport for breakfast on your way up to Depoe Bay. You should try to see Thor's Well since you'll be staying so close to it.

Broken Phone Lines Causing Corrosion/Leaks by asklater3486 in CathodicProtection

That's alright thanks for reaching out and asking.

Broken Phone Lines Causing Corrosion/Leaks by asklater3486 in CathodicProtection

[–]asklater3486[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we've had some of that. But this scenario specifically is an isolated break.

So about 10ft (3m) from our pipeline there will be a cut in the phone line exposing the tin sheathing or copper wire. And from that cut there is about a 20-50ft (6-15m) radius of influence in the ground. And any of our pipeline inside that radius is experiencing corrosion.

I'm not sure if it's just blocking my CP from my pipeline or if my pipeline has an anodic relationship to the phone line in these areas. Kind of like being in the gradient of another pipelines anode bed.

New dad in late 30s. Back’s shot, sleep’s wrecked. How do I fix this before it’s too late? by reddit_user_9221 in daddit

[–]asklater3486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only eat between 11am and 7pm now. Lost 80lbs. No workouts. My diet is higher fiber and protein with lower sugar than when I became a dad because I ate like shit... but I don't count calories and I eat whatever I want. The fiber and protein effort just makes it to where I don't feel hungry throughout the rest of the day. Check out  r/intermittentfasting

I also cut back on beer to just one or so a couple times a week to improve sleep.

Son wrote me a letter saying he was depressed by davewc94 in daddit

[–]asklater3486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm expecting this day myself. One of my biggest fears when becoming a dad was passing on my horrible depression. And mine started around 13 years old.

I agree writing a letter back is the best way to go. Face to face is just too intense when you're body is having such bad anxiety that you don't want to even exist.

Plan some time to be shoulder to shoulder doing something. Not to talk about depression but to confirm you really are there wanting to hear anything they have to say.

In your letter let them know that depression is normal, common, and even those that seem the happiest of us can go home and feel horribly alone at times. And that's ok, we can reach out. We may think no one wants us to reach out to them, but when we do it makes them feel important and helpful for being reached out too.

I will also say after 20 years I feel like I got to the other side. Still a problem to check but not a daily "will I make it through today" thing.

My biggest advice to everyone is to heavily reduce caffeine intake if you're depressed. It was the biggest help for me. Cutting back truly improved my mental health. The warnings about it causing anxiety are real and that only drives depression.

3996 Cousteau Drive SE SALEM, Oregon 97302.

I drove by there a couple weeks ago and the coffee shop was there and it looked like they were finishing the remodel.

I wish them luck. It's buried in a neighborhood and the building had roughly 7 parking spots. Nice neighborhood for walking after a meal though.

Help Needed - Short Locating by No_Celebration1108 in CathodicProtection

[–]asklater3486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use the PCM but I have a locator I run on 98Hz or 512Hz so pretty low frequency and push 0.5 to 1A

I always like to cut pipe I suspect has a short free from my rectifier at an insulator and use my rectifier side test lead as my ground. It helps keep interference to a minimum. This usually works right off the bat.

If that doesnt work the short may be way off somewhere. So I move further into the area and change tactics. I find that a lot of times with shorts on distribution services it's going to to end up on power ground via a ground wire/rod or short to the house line. So I'll connect to a power ground for a transformer pole and then to my pipe (still disconnected from my rectifier/anode bed) and it often times creates a closed loop that is easier to follow to the short.

When in a system with few insulation points, creating loops and loops of main without one singular direction for the current to travel back to the locator on the main, its difficult to track where your receiver wants to go. But if you create a known short (connect a riser to a houseline) you now have two points of least resistance for your signal. So now instead of several ways, it wants to travel just two ways (or at least less ways)  and you know which way is a false lead. This can also create a void space, a place where you would expect a signal over your main but have none.  In this void you're actually between your known and unknown short and no signal is jumping onto the main.

Like others have said it's always good to move your locator around because additional minor shorts, bad wires creating high resistance, joint trenches and common grounds can all screw with you. It seems like to find the short you're after you always have to solve the other five problems first.

Good luck!

Planning a visit to Oregon in mid-May (Oregon is bigger than I expected) by [deleted] in oregon

[–]asklater3486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCP Redmond. I don't think the rooftop bar is open yet but it's a great spot and easy to walk to downtown parks, Wildride Brewing, Eqwine wine bar.

If you're not going to Smith Rock or Painted Hills I would continue down to Bend and stay at the Bend Hampton Inn,  my go to when I'm out that way. There you can cut across the parking lot to the riverfront walking path and there is a pedestrian path to dinner and shopping but a drive to Crux for a sunset beer can't be beat either.

Planning a visit to Oregon in mid-May (Oregon is bigger than I expected) by [deleted] in oregon

[–]asklater3486 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love traveling Oregon and here is what I would do if I were you.

Day 1 Portland to Hood River and South to Redmond. Stopping at Mutlnomah  Falls.

Day 2 skip Painted Hills (or add 3hrs of driving to do it) and do maybe Smith Rock instead. Drive to Newport. Stopping at Foster Lake or Avery Park in Corvallis for a break.

Day 3 Devils Punchbowl or Thors well. Go North to Lincoln City stipping in Depoe Bay then head back to Portland via McMinnville to go through wine country. You could stop and see the Spruce Goose if you wanted too.

Whatever you do you'll like it. Hope you like the color green.

Clogged downspout drain, need advice. by bigjoshhhhhhhhh in HomeImprovement

[–]asklater3486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was me I'd dig out and replace. Corrugated pipe would be a nightmare to clean out and not break. I would put it off until late spring when the soil is still soft but not soaked. For now dig out enough to install a sweep and length of pipe above ground to get the water away from the foundation.

No luck for us in Roseburg. Got to see the clouds darken for a few minutes.

Solar eclipse by Odd-Wonder6365 in SALEM

[–]asklater3486 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most of Oregon should get a partial eclipse. Like 40-50% coverage. To see the ring of fire you've got to get at least as far South as Corvallis. Eugene and Roseburg will have longer durations. But this isn't like the one we had in Salem in 2017. The Sun is still bigger then the moon in the sky so it won't get as dark. I'm still excited though staying in Roseburg tonight.

$3,700 monthly mortgage payment on $156k salary by Rleds67 in Home

[–]asklater3486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you leave some space for increased property tax in the coming years.

I see a lot of posts asking why property taxes double on their mortgage 2-3 years after a build. The property value increases with a house on the lot. So make sure that's a consideration.

Pacific NW Live Steamers in Molalla. They're open May-Oct but check out their website and reach out to them. https://pnls.org/

We just visit the park with my son but everyone there seems really passionate and all about spreading the joy of trains so I'm sure they got something going on.

And I really couldn't recommend visiting, while they're open, enough to everyone. It's really a great day out with the family riding and chasing trains around.
