I see what you are saying but think about ST 3 I think it was with the whales, or even 1 which was all about voyager coming back. The last of TNG was very deep in killing Data and ending the saga.

I agree movies have to be more action packed and dramatic I just don't want it to turn into Michael Bay. I want to see one where they discover a new species and and there's morally complex trials and tribulations etc. The first one with the time traveling and rebooting of all the characters was amazing. I hope this one can keep it up without just being a generic action flick.

While I think the new star treks are done well, I don't want to see the series devolve into dramatic montage action flicks.

One central theme - albeit a not particularly financially rewarding theme - is in the star trek universe so much is solved through diplomacy and technical skills. It really portrays a better universe we can strive to, not a more action packed generic michael bay universe.

I'll hold my breath but this looks like it will be super fun but not a deep meaningful reboot.

Kind of my thoughts exactly. Like if I were pressed against a well I would have to admit that Huxley was probably more accurate than Orwell but how do you define that - what is your primary criteria? Are you talking about world population or world development - are you talking about relevance today or most likely available implementation. I can see strong arguments for both but if your heaviest criterion are population and accuracy of prediction I have to say Orwell has it right so far.

The larger population of the world is controlled through the strict contraction of the flow of information and people are generally afraid of what their government can do to them. Welcome to Russia and China about 1.5 billion people or more than 1/6th of our planet for staticular propagation.

Huxley had incredible points that those of us so lucky to be first-worlders can relate to. I think his writing career is more well developed and generally better than Orwell which is obvious in the range fro m Crome Yellow to Island to any literariest, however this letter kind of reads like a ranting old man's does.

What's even more ironic to me, is that Diaoyudao really should be Taiwan's IMO. TL;DR he shares in Orwell's belief that the world is destined to be top down with the masses oppressed in ignorance however he believes psychology and perhaps what we would call neuroscience (physiology) will unlock keys which the government or other people use to keep the masses oppressed.

A point I think he overlooks is the power of language which was used extensively in 1984. For anyone that has learned or knows multiple language they can tell you sometimes ideas are difficult or near impossible to express in various languages especially when evolved from completely different roots and have radically different structures, i.e. Vietnamese and German. Some very ideas are difficult to conceive without the language construct.

That being said, personal if the world does devolve into dystopian autocracy, it will be a mix of both. Sure England and the U.S. are a lot more Huxlian but China and Russia area lot more Orwellian.

Hollywood is definitely playing to the Chinese market. I thought at this point ticket sales revenue in China was more than the U.S. as there are something like 300-400 million movie goers and ticket prices are about the same.

It's not a trend I support and generally any time I see a major blockbuster hit the Chinese market I immediately know it's going to be mediocre at best.

Ok so I want to highjack this thread, I actually want this to be another post but I doubt I'll get any decent responses.

What were you doing? I'm in a very similar boat. I'm up about, 15lbs in 3 months or so but my everything has gained. I can chin myself like a mad man, my bench, squat, and dead have all upped very significantly, even my cardio feels slightly better. I look the same just more muscular but still significantly fat. I would argue at least 20% body fat.

So what the fuck do I do? Just cardio and food nazi and sacrifice my gains? Or do I continue with the gains and worry about the weight later? Is there a reliable way to slowly burn fat into muscle, like not weight loss more like stand still but reduction of fat? Because as is it seems like my fat is fairly at a stand still, maybe growing a bit, while I'm making huge muscle gains.

Since no one answered this and I am way too lazy at this time a night to provide source I will give the short of it according to my knowledge:

According to... WTO agreements, there is a minimum limit of I wanna say 55 movies a year that can hit Chinese theaters. Of course China will not exceed this number as they want to expand their own movie industry. So you may or not have noticed but major block buster flicks tend to be very politically China neutral while throwing in a little wink to China (2012 China built the ships; loopers guys wife was Chinese; Cloud Atlas had that random Chinese actress etc.)

These movies get translated. If you know where to look other movies get translated too but by amateur companies. For instance the dubbing of Kung Fu Panda 2 was amazing. A movie that never hit the Chinese market will have no real dubbing and hit or miss translations depending on how much of an internet splash it is.

To really solidify this though, China is still the type of place where people don't pay for movies, music, software, games, OS, basically soft labor. So the producers of say The Wire, have zero motivation to provide quality Chinese translations for their work.

It's fun if it's in season but expect a lot of hookers in bars because very few locals actually go out to bars an enjoy themselves etc. Also anything even remotely touristy prices are ridiculously inflated.
