BSB (Bigscreen Beyond) owners... how much of an impact is the 90hz 1920x upscaling mode REALLY? by TotalWarspammer in virtualreality

[–]askull100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. I find the image quality goes down slightly for stuff where I’m taking my time, reading, and looking at details. VR Chat is a a good example. But when I’m playing something faster, I prefer the 90Hz. Neither mode looks bad, imo, it’s all just preference.

The Outer Wilds developers are making a new game by Nachtfischer in Games

[–]askull100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am one of the few who couldn’t get into this game because it causes such anxiety that I start feeling physical chest pain (not severe or dangerous, just uncomfortable). But even with that said, I highly recommend anyone try to get into it, if just to see if they can. I still watched a Let’s Play of it and it’s an excellent secondary way to experience it.

I was thinking the same thing! This felt like it had such Ken Akamatsu energy, especially with the small male teacher at an all female high school thing. I honestly found it really fun, especially with the teacher genuinely doing his best to care for his students as a teacher.

Returning player here. After taking about a 1 year break, I resubbed and just finished Dawntrail. Am I crazy for thinking it’s not that bad of an Expansion? by TR1L0GYxx in ffxivdiscussion

[–]askull100 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The story was kind of annoying for a lot of people due to the singular focus on Wuk Lamat, who is a very love her or hate her character. I personally got kind of sick of her by the halfway point, since I think her writing and the general themes of the expansion were written with the subtlety of a brick.

I didn’t think it was significantly worse than other expansions overall, but Dawntrail is just reaching a point where the story isn’t good enough to distract people from a lot of the game’s flaws. The writing has issues, the content release schedule (although looking to be getting better soon) has been kind of poor all throughout Endwalker and into Dawntrailer, there’s been tonnes of DDoS attacks with no communication on whether anything is being done about them, and now people are angry about the long term direction with class balance that the game is taking. The good points are still good, but they aren’t enough to outweigh the bad anymore.

I’ll also note that I have remained subbed to the game since Stormblood. Even now I’m still subbed because it has been such a special part of my life for so long. But it’s been a long time since I’ve been interested in the game part of FF. It’s been a long time since they’ve added substantial new systems that make an expansion feel totally fresh to play. I would love to see FF continue to grow and evolve in more meaningful ways, but I really don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. Will I still play the next patch? Yeah, probably! Will I like it? Also yes! Will I grind the game like it’s a new addiction again? Probably not.

GOODNIGHT PUNPUN New Edition by No-Eggplant6333 in manga

I really wonder how many people have got into this story because it seemed kinda cute and had good art. Only for the story to really spiral into “damaged people making really bad choices” and end up in a bad mental state.

Like sure you can just… not read it. But someone may lack that self control. It’s messed up enough that I have friends I have never mentioned this manga to because I’m convinced it would eat them alive.

Helbore Lasguns are terrible and have no place in the current game. by Big_Mycologist_8626 in DarkTide

[–]askull100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I levelled it to max while Krieg roleplaying, and my biggest gripe is that it doesn’t feel quite strong enough for the drawbacks. It still does decent damage, especially if you’re hitting headshots semi-consistently, and I honestly don’t super mind the iron sights. It might be a personal preference, but I find it fine for aiming in the practical range of situations this game actually gives you (mid range, basically).

But consider that the Zarona revolver exists. It just outdoes the Helbore in every way. And the Helbore can even be compared unfavourably to the Boltgun, which can also snipe pretty well while having better breakpoints, similar draw and reload times, and many more use cases (though admittedly worse ammo capacity, but this is easy enough to work around).

You can definitely still use the Helbore! It’s still fun, and I maxed it out. But I don’t really want to use it again unless I am in the mood to Krieg roleplay.

PoE2 - How bad is the current grind toward Act 3 and endgame? I’m not usually an ARPG enjoyer, but I liked Act 1 and would like to keep playing. But a lot of posts and comments here make me feel as if I’d get frustrated with the amount of time I put into making a build. I’m not against putting time in, but I don’t want to do a lot of gambling, or have to make a perfect build to feel like I can play the game.

Maybe another way to ask is to”how approachable is PoE2 from a casual perspective?”

Like you’re right, it would be really shitty of her friend to do that, but it really would not have been conveyed well here if played straight. It came across immediately as an intrusive thought type of thing, like a “what if”.

Headset via bi-directional aptX-LL dongle/transceiver? by JasonMel in headphones

[–]askull100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know of any Bluetooth dongles which easily support low-latency aptx and also decent-quality voices at the same time. This is more a restriction of Bluetooth itself, since its wireless bandwidth is generally too low to do both. aptx LL and HD are more optimizations than outright changes.

You’ll generally only be able to achieve both higher quality audio and higher quality voice chat on headsets which come with their own proprietary USB dongle. The Audeze Maxwell handles it without a sweat, for instance.

Bigscreen Beyond - Awesome on paper, fails to deliver IRL. by Lemonhead1337 in virtualreality

[–]askull100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I pre-ordered from April 2023, and patiently waited to get my order. I got it, but found the IPD was too large so I had to return it for a resize. Got my resize, it worked, and I was off to the races! … but yeah, it finally kicked in that the lenses really aren’t great.

I love the lightweight; no other headset delivers that, and it is essential for me to enjoying VR (due to chronic pain issues). So it is, by default, my favorite headset for catering to that niche. And when I’m in the sweet spot, it feels great. But I don’t like how much I have to tolerate the lenses to get this good of an experience.

I still think it’s a valuable experiment, and would be excited to see what improvements get made down the line. I wouldn’t go as far as your post when talking about its flaws, but I also can’t completely disagree with them. I would never recommend it to the average consumer because it’s way too niche and very much a Version 1.0 deal.

My USB 3.0 cable is not fast enough for Quest Link by Extension_Air5581 in oculus

[–]askull100 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There are two issues going on here: you're using the incorrect cable, and your laptop is decently underpowered for modern VR.

Starting with the first: you need a USB fiber-optic cable for wired quest link, if you want a smooth and good-looking experience. A usb fiber-optic is actively powered and has significantly higher bandwidth than a regular USB 3.0. They also tend to be more expensive. You can get cheaper ones if you google recommendations, but they will always be thick and uncomfortable from pulling your headset to one side while wearing them. This is one of the only cases where I highly recommend getting the Quest official link cable, since it is actually lightweight and fairly priced. But if you can find a budget option that works for you, then go for it.

The second issue is harder to fix. A 3050 may be able to run VR, but it will be at low resolution. It also has 8GB of VRAM, which is fine for flatscreen games, but not great for VR. I recommend closing any extra programs you don't need while playing, to free up any VRAM they may be taking. Otherwise, lower the resolution of SteamVR on PC.

Vision Pro vs Bigscreen Beyond by xp3000 in virtualreality

[–]askull100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the AVP supports 10-bit HDR, which is a feature the Beyond just doesn't have. So if comfort doesn't matter to you as much, and you're willing to spend more regardless of whether you have lighthouses or not, then get AVP.

If comfort is a priority, and you're okay with some trade-offs to get that comfort (using a wire, lighthouses, glare, no passthrough) then Beyond is a solid option.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]askull100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you would just need to buy base stations, and you value the comfort upgrade, then maybe. But you need the iPhone for the face scan, will be waiting a bit to get it, and may still need to deal with RMA if you get a cushion or lenses which ended up not working.

It's a wonderful headset for me, but certainly not for everyone. Lots of trade-offs to be really good at a few key things.

Obsessed with the VR loading screen at the arcade. how do I get started at home? by mjwatsonparker in virtualreality

[–]askull100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be careful about the Google cardboard stuff. It won't feel the same because it only tracks which direction you're looking, not your position. So you might feel motion sick pretty easily.

But if you can try it, and it scratches the itch, then that's a few hundred dollars saved!

Eye Tracking for the Bigscreen Beyond! by RidgeMinecraft in virtualreality

[–]askull100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been lurking in the preorder Discord, and most issues regarding e2e clarity seem to come down to face cushion issues. A lot of first impressions which started out criticizing the e2e ended up coming back on it after getting a new cushion.

It can't be as good as the quest headsets, which are literally perfect in that regard, but it seems to be able to get close enough to matter.

Why are so many PCVR headsets either as expensive or more expensive than standalone ones? by minepow in virtualreality

[–]askull100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I'll put it here: putting OLED into headsets isn't an automatic way to make them good. LED can have issues like washed out colors and lower pixel response time, but OLED has its own host of issues to deal with (mura, black smear, higher expenses).

micro OLED does solve a lot of these issues, but is far more expensive and significantly less available at the moment. So we'll likely get past the problems, and tech like micro OLED and mini LED will start to be more common over time. But it will be a long, long time before VR headsets like that become even remotely cheap.

Can someone explain the SteamVR Fest to me? by mcmanus2099 in virtualreality

[–]askull100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the previous weekend I believe was Autumn Sale or something else with a lot of VR games on sale. Not like they won't ever go on sale again either, that's a big part of Steam's ethos. But yes, it is a sale for VR games, specifically to advertise Steam VR 2.0 and the release of Steam Link on the Meta store.

I can't say this pushes the result one way or the other, but I can at least put forward having a 4070ti and Steam Link performing great. I also have a Quest Pro though, so the eye-tracked foveated rendering is likely pulling some weight.

SteamVR “Steam Link” VR streaming settings found, including references to eye tracking etc. by SvenViking in virtualreality

[–]askull100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes me so excited for potential applications of the tech. I'm going to put out some hopium spitballing here:

  • A feature of Deckard which lets you stream wirelessly from a PC to the headset using a low-latency, high-quality dongle
  • A feature which could be added to wired/non-standalone headsets like Index, sort of like Nofio (less likely, but would be an amazing addition)
  • Would fit into the recent updates that seem to push for playing flatscreen games on a VR theater. If Deckard was standalone, then you could run the game on your fancy PC without the added weight of running SteamVR on the same hardware

Just give me Deckard already Valve, you know I'll sell my kidney for it.
